Senior Day games (last home game). The Deacons beat Georgia Tech on Senior Day
last season, 98-91. NC State spoiled Senior Day in 2004.

Wyoming-Utah

Press Notes

The Runnin’ Utes (12-14, 5-10 MWC) close out the regular season against the Wyoming
Cowboys (12-16, 5-10 MWC). Utah,
tied for sixth place in the Mountain West Conference with Wyoming,
has lost its last four games. The Utes are coming off a 69-65 loss to TCU on Wednesday night in Fort Worth,
Texas
. Before having last weekend off, Utah
lost at UNLV, 65-59, on Feb 22. Utah
is 9-5 at home overall this season and 3-4 in conference play. Utah
has lost its last four games by an average of five points, including one
overtime game. Utah is playing
one redshirt freshman and four other newcomers. Through 26 games, 58.0 percent
of the Utes’ points, 48.4 percent of their rebounds, 52.1 percent of their
assists, and 54.2 percent of their minutes played have come from first-year players. The Utes are 12-4 when holding their opponents
to 68 points or less this season and 0-10 when allowing 69 points or more. Over
the last nine games, Utah has
held its opponents to an average of 61.3 points per game on 40.6 percent
shooting from the field and 32.5 percent from three-point range. The Utes have
owned a 33.8 to 27.3 edge in rebounds per game, outworking all nine teams on
the glass. However, Utah has also
had a -4.6 turnover ratio.

when Clemson finished the season with 20.
Clemson has made 44 of its last 99 three-point goals over four games and
the Tigers are averaging 83.3 points per game over those three contests.
Clemson made 11-14 three-point shots in the second half in its win at Virginia
Tech on Wednesday.

NBA

Wizards-Sixers

Philadelphia Inquirer

The Sixers, 4-1 since the all-star break, are starting to
hope. Now would be a good time to avenge those two embarrassing defeats. The
Sixers (29-28) are playing more like a team, which usually translates to wins. The
Houston game marked the fourth time
in their last five games they have shot at least 50 percent from the field.
Their 51.9 percent mark was the highest allowed by the defensive-minded Rockets
all season. The Sixers will get a chance tonight to atone for two of their most
embarrassing defeats of the season when the Wizards visit Philadelphia
for the first time. The Sixers played a pair of afternoon games against the
Wizards at the MCI Center
and sleepwalked through both of them. They set a season low for points and
shooting percentage (33.3) in a 104-76 loss on Jan. 16, and lost the Feb. 12
rematch, 107-97, in a game Washington
led comfortably throughout the second half. The Wizards have lost their last
two games to slip from fifth to sixth in the Eastern Conference playoff
picture. With a win tonight, the Sixers can leap ahead of Washington
into sixth.

Knicks-Bulls

INS News

The Knicks have lost 21 of their last 23 games, and five
of their last six to the Bulls. Chicago
was the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs last season, but is
currently 3 ½ games behind the Milwaukee
for the eighth and final playoff spot after dropping nine of its last 14 games.
The Bulls scored a season-low 17 points in the first quarter Thursday night
against Cleveland, rallied from a
25-point deficit but lost 92-91 to the Cavaliers.

Magic-Suns

Orlando Sentinel

Magic PG Jameer Nelson, who has
missed the past 20 games because of cartilage damage to his right foot, might
play. It would be a game-time decision. If he plays, the Magic would have to
place another player on the inactive list, likely C Mario Kasun
or F Trevor Ariza. The Magic have lost 10 of their
past 11 games, including their past three. Phoenix
is leading the Pacific Division at 39-17 and has an eight-game winning streak.
The Suns are 23-8 at home. The Suns lost to the Magic 111-102 in Orlando
on Jan. 24. The Magic shot 54.7 percent from the floor and outscored the Suns
27-19 in the fourth.

CBB

Loyola-Detroit

Press Notes

Winners of the last four games, Loyola, the hottest team
in the Horizon League, looks to advance to the semifinal round of the Horizon
League Championship for the third time in the last five seasons as it faces
Detroit Friday night. The victor of this game will meet top-seeded UW-Milwaukee
Saturday night in a game to be televised by ESPNU.
The Titans ended the Ramblers’ season in the quarterfinal round of the Horizon
League Championship in both 2003 and 2004. In 2003, Loyola fell to Detroit,
98-84 at U.S Cellular Arena in Milwaukee
in David Bailey’s final game as a Rambler. Loyola is 3-2 against Detroit
in conference tournament action. Loyola is 22-25 (.468) all-time in league
tournament action, but is 7-4 over the last five seasons. Since the new Horizon
League Championship format was introduced three years ago, the Ramblers are 4-0
in first-round games. Loyola dropped nine consecutive opening-round games from
1993-2001, but has gone 5-0 in its tournament lid-lifters since that dry spell.

CITADEL +12 Furman

The Citadel will rally around their head coach who is
barring a miracle coaching in his last game tonight.  Pat Dennis made a couple of decisions this
season that honored his school, his team and a player. He suspended his star
player and recommended his point guard take a medical redshirt rather than play
through a stress fracture.

.

Despite knowing the final year of his contract was
expiring, Dennis made an uncomfortable bed for himself. He lived with the
results of those decisions, and they were not pretty. The Citadel won eight
games and lost 20. A regular-season-ending victory against Wofford
kept the Bulldogs from going winless in the Southern Conference.

“I just looked for what was best for the team in both
situations,” Dennis says. “We did the right thing with (the injured player)
personally, and we did the right thing with (the suspended player) for the
team.”

The big dogs are actually playing well and winning two in
a row and play a very inconsistent double digit favorite.

Cal Santa Barbara-Pacific

Press Notes

Pacific has won 13 of the last 16 games to climb into
first place in the Big West.  Pacific
defeated Cal State Northridge 79-51 on Feb. 22 and 70-66 on Feb. 25. Pacific
leads the all-time series with UC Santa Barbara
49-43, and have won five straight in the series. The
Tigers hold a 28-14 advantage in Stockton,
and have won the last three meetings in the Spanos Center.

Illinois State-Evansville

Press Notes

The Redbirds carry a 20-11 advantage in the series, but Evansville
has won five of the last eight meetings. The two teams have only met once in
the conference tournament, which resulted in an 81-77 Redbird victory in the
2001 tournament. With seven newcomers on the Redbird roster this season there
are only seven returnees with tournament experience. Through 27 games, the ‘Birds
have courted 11 different starting line-ups this season. The total more than
doubles that of last season, in which the ‘Birds had four different starting
combinations. Of the 14 players on the roster, 11 have earned starting
assignments and no combination has been used for more than seven games.

UCLA-California

Press Notes

UCLA’s 22-6 start (UCLA’s eight-game winning streak was
snapped by the home loss to California/its five game winning streak was stopped
by the road loss at No. 21 Washington-it was UCLA’s first road loss of the
season). UCLA has held five of its last 11 opponents under .400 and two under
.300. Only twice in the last nine games has an opponent shot better than .464.
Eight of those 11 opponents scored 60 points or less.  Halftime bettors: UCLA trailed both Oregon
schools at halftime (OSU 32-26 and UO 28-23), but came back with big second half rallies
(season high for a half 52 vs. OSU and second-highest
season high for a second half 47 vs. UO). Vs. Oregon,
the Bruins shot their best second-half FG% (.625,
15-24) of the season. After missing eight games with a left shoulder injury
(cartilage/he started the first 11 games before the injury), Cedric Bozeman has
returned to play in the last nine games and started the last eight contests.
With Bozeman in the lineup, the
Bruins are 17-3 (16-3 as a starter).

Memphis-UAB

Memphis Commercial Appeal

There are lots of reasons these third-ranked Tigers (26-2,
12-0 Conference USA)
are, at 10-0, the only undefeated road team in the nation heading into tonight’s
8:30 p.m. showdown with UAB (20-5, 10-2). From talent to depth to a favorable
schedule, the list is as long as their current 15-game winning streak. But the
main reason is confidence.

NBA

Cavaliers-Bulls

Northwest Herald

After a weekend when the Bulls lost two games in which
they had opportunities to pick up ground in the NBA’s playoff race, the team
said its chances of returning to the postseason depends on finding consistency.
On Friday night the Bulls lost a close physical battle to the conference-leading
Detroit Pistons. Then Saturday they slipped, 108-102, in Philadelphia,
a team the Bulls had thrashed by 33 points only nine days before at home.
Coming into the United Center
tonight will be the Minnesota Timberwolves, who sport
an identical 24-31 record to the Bulls. The Bulls will be seeing a newly
configured Minnesota team tonight
different from the squad they defeated, 99-93, in January. Later that month,
the T-Wolves traded Wally Szczerbiak to Boston,
among others, for guards Ricky Davis and Marcus Banks.

Mavericks-Spurs

Star-Telegram

In addition to the Western Conference lead being at stake
tonight, the Mavs-Spurs winner takes a 2-1 lead in
the four-game season series. The final meeting is April 7 in San
Antonio
. The Southwest Division title, and likely top
seed for the Western Conference playoffs, could be determined by the
head-to-head play. The Mavs (45-11) and Spurs (44-12)
have the top two records in the conference.
