LA CLIPPERS +3’ San Antonio

The Spurs are 43-6 when rested this year.  However they are 4-6 SU in back to back
games. Think about it.  Half of their
losses but about 1/12 of their wins were in tonight’s
situation.

Yes the Spurs are playing well winning seven straight,
covering six.  All
seven they were rested.  Before
their recent streak they played unrested to Cleveland
and were blown to smithereens.

spent the Ivy League season proving that isn’t the team that began the season

The Tigers clinched second place in the league standings with a 56-45 win at
Yale Saturday. Penn clinched the outright Ivy title and an NCAA berth when it
defeated Yale Friday and the Tigers lost at Brown. The Quakers were then taken
to overtime by Brown Saturday night before pulling out a 74-68 victory. 52% of Princeton’s
shots this season have come from three-point range. 45% of the Tigers’ points
this season have come from beyond the arc.

Colorado State-TCU

The Rams enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed after a
4-12 conference record while TCU comes in No. 9 going
2-14 in league play on the year. The Horned Frogs hold a 6-24 overall record
and have won just once in their last 10 contests. TCU
closed out Mountain West play Saturday with a 72-61 loss at UNLV
giving them an 0-8 record on the road in conference
play. Colorado State
holds a 59-28 overall record in home games during Dale Layer’s six seasons. Colorado
State has hit 103-of-239
three-pointers (.431) in Moby Arena this year. In contrast, the Rams are
73-of-213 (.343) from behind the arc away from home. After holding opponents to
a .379 field goal percentage in non-conference games, CSU allowed league
opponents to shoot at a .475 clip through the regular season. MWC foes scored 76.5 points per game on the Rams compared to a 67.0 points per game average in non-conference play.

Butler-Wisconsin Milwaukee

Press Notes

Although critics of the 3-pointer contend accuracy comes
and goes and imperils teams that rely on the shot, the Bulldogs simply must do
so. They have no player taller than 6-6, and they have outrebounded
opponents once in 30 games. Butler
has made 30 3-pointers over the past two games, raising its season total to
272. That ranks fifth in the NCAA.

Warriors-Hawks

Mercury News

The Hawks have beaten some quality teams and gave Miami
all it could handle Saturday before losing 95-93. The Hawks will be
well-rested, having not played since the Heat game. The Warriors won the first
meeting 122-97 in the season opener Nov. 2 in Oakland.

Nets-Bulls

The Atlantic Division-leading Nets look for their eighth
straight win over Chicago when they
kick off a three-game road trip against the struggling Bulls. New
Jersey has allowed its opponents to score at least
100 points in a season-high five straight games, going 1-4 in that span and
allowing Philadelphia within two
games of the division lead. The Nets also are coming off their most lopsided
home loss of the season, 109-84 to Sacramento
on Monday. New Jersey shot just 37.1
percent from the floor, while the Kings shot 49.4 percent. The Nets are
outscoring Chicago by 8.5 points in
their last eight meetings, and have not lost to the Bulls since April 11, 2003. Chicago
fell to 6-6 in its last 12 games after a 91-72 loss to Cleveland
on Sunday.

Washington State-Oregon

Press Notes

Washington State
is 2-6 all-time in Pac-10 Tournament games. Ducks have won 10 straight in the
series and 18 of the last 19. Oregon
has won eight of 12 meetings on a neutral floor, including an 8-2 record at the
Far West Classic in Portland, Ore.
Ducks are averaging 68.6 points on offense and give up 64.6 points on defense.
The Cougars lead the Pac-10 in scoring defense (57.4 points per game), field
goal percentage defense (39.0) and 3-point field goal percentage defense
(29.5). Washington State
has led just once at halftime in its last 13 games, 11 of which have resulted
in loss.

Central Florida-East Carolina

The UCF men’s basketball team
has made two-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, but will have a new
challenge this season as it participates in the 2006 Conference USA
Championship presented by Aeropostale. The Golden
Knights (13-14) earned the fifth seed at the league tournament and will face
No. 12 East Carolina (8-19) in the first round on Wednesday evening in Memphis,
Tenn. Dating back
to the start of the 2001-02 campaign, UCF is 10-1 in
conference championship action. The Golden Knights have won six-straight league
tournament games. UCF has a 4-0 edge in the all-time
series with East Carolina and swept the season series
with the Pirates this year. The Golden Knights closed the regular season in
strong fashion, winning three of their last four games.

Cincinnati-Syracuse

Cincinnati,
19-11, closed regular season play with a 78-75 win over No. 16 West Virginia to
finish eighth in the BIG EAST with an 8-8 ledger. Syracuse, also
19-11, finished in ninth place with a 7-9 record following Sunday’s 92-82 loss
to No. 4 Villanova, SU’s third straight defeat.
Though both teams have won over 70 percent of their home games this season,
neither found the home court to be an advantage when the played each other.
Syracuse beat Cincinnati, 77-58, at UC’s Fifth Third
Arena while the Bearcats retaliated with an 82-65 win over the Orange in the
Carrier Dome, the two teams’ largest margins of defeat at home in 2006. The
Bearcats were rated No. 4 in the RPI and No. 5 in the
Sagarin Index in strength of schedule rankings at the conclusion of the regular
season.

The Utes placed sixth in the Mountain West Conference
during the regular season and earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament. Utah
opens tournament play against No. 3 BYU (20-7, 12-4 MWC). The Utes have competed in 22 previous conference
tournaments-16 as a member of the Western Athletic Conference and the last six
in the Mountain West Conference-posting a 28-18 (.609) record. Utah
has never lost in the quarterfinals (5-0) and boasts an 8-5 all-time mark in
the MWC Tournament. This year’s sixth seed is the
lowest for the Utes in the MWC Tournament. The Runnin’ Utes are 13-14 overall and placed sixth in the
Mountain West Conference with a 6-10 record. Utah
has gone 5-5 over its last 10 games entering postseason play. Last week, the
Utes closed out the regular season with a 65-59 loss at TCU
on Wednesday night and a 79-70 win over Wyoming
at home on Saturday night. Before defeating Wyoming
last Saturday night at home, Utah
had lost its last four games by an average of five points, including one
overtime game. Twelve of the Runnin’ Utes’ games have
been decided by nine points or less, with Utah
going 5-7 in those games. Utah is
playing one redshirt freshman and four other newcomers. Through 27 games, 57.7
percent of the Utes’ points, 48.3 percent of their rebounds, 51.5 percent of
their assists, and 54.0 percent of their minutes played have come from
first-year players. The Utes lead the all-time series 123-118, winning 21 of
the last 26 meetings and seven of the last nine. BYU
has a 6-4 edge over Utah on
neutral courts.

Arizona-Stanford

forward Hassan Adams was suspended Monday by coach
Lute Olson for the Pac-10 tournament after the senior was arrested on suspicion
of drunken driving during the weekend. Adams, the team’s leading scorer. Adams
is averaging 17.3 points per game this season, third in the Pac-10.

State

Mississippi State
leads the series record 10-6. USC, 15-14 and finishing 6-10 in the SEC, will travel to Nashville
to play Mississippi State,

Clemson-Miami

Clemson has been one of the best teams in the ACC over the
last five games of the season. Oliver Purnell’s
Tigers have a 4-1 record in those games with the only loss an overtime defeat
at Wake Forest, 74-68 on February 22. Statistically, Clemson has a +10.0
scoring margin over the last five games, second only to North
Carolina’s +22.2. In fact, only five of the 12 ACC
teams have a positive scoring margin over the last five games. Clemson has
three wins by double digits, second only to North
Carolina’s four. Clemson has averaged 85.6 points per
game over the last five thanks in part to 43.7 percent three-point shooting.

OHIO -17 Central Michigan

Ohio was
caught off guard once.  That will ensure
it won’t happen again tonight. Monday’s meeting is similar to the 2002 MAC
Tournament when CMU won at Ohio
as the No. 12 seed, 65-56. That year, CMU only had one road win entering the
postseason, the same situation as this season.

How do they match-up? The two teams met earlier this year
in Athens and the Bobcats posted a
76-44 win on Jan. 14.

CMU actually was relatively competitive at home but rancid
on the road.  In location comparison
(home team’s home stats, road team’s road stats) Ohio
makes 12.4 percent more of their shots and allows 3.4 less. Central is
outscored by 16 ppg on the road and Ohio
is certainly a better than average team outscoring teams by 14 at home. 

This game is a rout as Ohio’s
blunder in 2002 ensures the rout.

If the University at Buffalo
makes a run in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, it will be with a short
bench. The Bulls, who finished 18-12 following Saturday’s regular season
finale loss at Miami (Ohio), have 10 healthy players but only seven, maybe
eight if the stars are aligned properly, will receive significant minutes. So
the No. 8-seeded Bulls will drag their weary bodies into a first-round matchup
against No. 9 seed Ball State
(10-17) at 7 p.m. tonight at Alumni
Arena. Because of injuries and waiting for several underclassmen to develop, UB coach Reggie Witherspoon has relied heavily on a 7-8 man
rotation but the Bulls found it difficult to keep pace once the MAC portion of
the schedule kicked in. Despite winning two of their last three games, the
Bulls were just 3-7 over their last 10 and finished fifth in the MAC East
Division with an 8-10 record. With that lean bench, seniors Calvin Cage, Mario
Jordan and Roderick Middleton and juniors Yassin Idbihi and Parnell Smith can expect to play 30-35 minutes a
game. Cage admits he’s a bit fatigued, but this is his final season at UB and he’ll run on fumes at this point. “This is my last
hurrah,” he said. “Once the ball goes up, I’m going to go 45 or 50 minutes if I
have to.” Cage may not have a choice. Freshmen Sean Smiley and Vadim Fedotov are out for the
season with ACL injuries, which leaves a bench of freshman Eric Moore, junior
walk-on Darwin Young (Hutch-Tech) and not much else. It hasn’t helped that
Smith is still recovering from a high-ankle sprain and that Middleton is
suffering from a case of asthma.

Bowling Green-Toledo

The Rockets enter postseason play riding a seven-game MAC
win streak following Saturday’s 66-64 victory over Central Michigan.
The Rockets split their two meetings with Bowling Green this season with both
teams winning on their homecourt. UT has won seven straight games vs. the
Falcons in Savage Hall with its last defeat coming on Feb. 6, 1999. Toledo
has won nine of its last 13 meetings with the Falcons, but the two teams have
split their season series the last three years. Bowling Green is one of three teams to have
advanced to Cleveland in each of
the six years it has been held at Quicken Loans Arena. However, the Falcons are
on a seven-game losing streak and have 20 losses for the first time in 20
years.

Central Michigan-Ohio

The fifth-seeded Bobcats begin their title defense by
hosting 12^th-seeded Central Michigan in the
opening round on Monday. Last year, Ohio
was the fourth seed in the tournament, as it won its first postseason crown
since 1994. The Bobcats went 12-2 at home during the 2005-06 regular slate and
will have the luxury of hosting a Chippewa club that has dropped 11 of its last
12 outings. Central Michigan, which last won this event
in 2003, is a dreadful 1-13 on the road this year.

Miami All-Star guard Dwyane Wade sat out Saturday’s close win against Atlanta
with a sore right wrist, but the Heat listed him Sunday as a starter tonight.
Although its last game was surprisingly close (a two-point victory against a
struggling Hawks team), the Heat has won eight straight and is cruising to the
Southeast Division title. The Bobcats
are coming off a 12-day, six-game Western Conference trip, and coach Bernie
Bickerstaff isn’t sure how long it will take players to restore their energy.
The length of the trip—originally seven games, but a Saturday date against the
Hornets was moved to January—was needed to accommodate the circus and the CIAA tournament at the arena. Bickerstaff says he doesn’t
anticipate trips of similar length in future seasons. Upon reflection,
Bickerstaff wishes the Bobcats hadn’t made Monday available to the NBA for a
home game, since this requires such a quick turnaround.

Gerry McNamara, who plays the game with an almost
unmatched intensity, has never missed a game at Syracuse
— his streak of 129 starts is tops in the nation. But now the end of his
college career is near. McNamara will play his last regular-season home game
today against No. 4 Villanova, and he will be sent off in style. For the first
time in its 26-year history, the Carrier Dome is sold out, which means the
Orange’s N.C.A.A. record for largest on-campus crowd
to see a college basketball game — 33,199, set a season ago against Notre Dame
— will be eclipsed.

Fordham-Temple

The teams are currently entangled in a four-way tie for
fifth place in the conference standings. 
With help and a win, Temple
can secure the fourth seed in the A-10 Tournament which begins Wednesday in Cincinnati
and the all-important first round bye that goes with it. The Owls bring an 11-1
record at the Liacouras
Center into the contest.

The Pioneers (15-14, 7-8) travel to Murfreesboro,
Tenn., for the 2006 Sun Belt Conference
Championship hosted by Middle Tennessee. Denver’s first game will be on Sunday,
March 5 at 11 a.m. MT. DU is the No. 3 West Seed and
will play East No. 2 Middle Tennessee (16-11, 8-6). The Pioneers are riding a
two-game losing streak into the SBC Championship. DU
lost at South Alabama, 74-65 and at Troy,
76-68. The Blue Raiders are riding a three-game winning streak into the SBC
Championship. MT defeated Arkansas-Little Rock, 68-58, Western
Kentucky, 80-74 and Florida International, 82-58. The Blue Raiders
have won eight of their last 10 games. The Pioneers are 2-12 on the road and MT
is 8-3 at home. DU and MT meet for the eighth time
with the Blue Raiders leading the series, 4-3, but Denver
has won the last two meetings, including a 72-62 victory earlier this year in Murfreesboro.
DU is 2-2 all-time in the Murphy
Center.

Three rollicking full houses at home and even the
opposition full house at Tennessee
energized Stan Heath’s Razorbacks in their current
4-game winning streak. The energy surges Arkansas
to a virtual NCAA Tournament lock — their first since 2001 — at 20-8 overall,
9-6 in the SEC West. Football crazy Georgia
doesn’t get all that fired up about the Bulldogs’ basketball anyway, especially
when the Dawgs are but 15-13, 5-10 in the SEC East
like now. So the Razorbacks can expect a paltry, apathetic assembly looking on
much like when Ole Miss (14-14, 4-11 in the SEC West) upset them 73-70 at
Oxford, Miss. Arkansas’ lack of energy at Mississippi matched its surroundings
in its last loss before the four-game winning streak. “That energy in the
building,” Arkansas coach Stan
Heath said, “sometimes even if it is not for you — really gives them fuel in
their fire. So I do worry about that a little bit. We’ve got to find a way to
correct it.” It probably doesn’t help Arkansas
that some may regard this merely as a marking time game before Thursday’s start
to the SEC Tournament in Nashville.
