Miami-Florida State

Here are news and notes from the JoeDuffy.net private clipboard. They are compiled from hometown newspapers
and the team’s own press releases.

KRT Wire

What’s on the other side are
eight games in Tallahassee_the most in school history_and road trips to Duke, North
Carolina
State
and
Maryland, none of whom had a
winning league record last season. The ‘Noles’ most
daunting foes, after Miami, must
travel to Doak Campbell Stadium: Clemson, Boston
College
and Florida.After
Oct. 14 there is just one road game, and the post-Thanksgiving matchup with Florida
caps an entire month of home games in November. The Gators are FSU’s only preseason top-10 opponent, and Miami
and Clemson the only other teams in the top 25. FSU heads to South
Florida
a three-point underdog; it could be the last time the
Seminoles aren’t favored until Nov. 25. And given that that is a home game,
they likely will be favored against UF, too.

USA Today

The Seminoles pulled out last year’s nearly unwatchable
Labor Day showdown 10-7 and, though not without setbacks, won the inaugural
Atlantic Coast Conference title game. The score should be higher this time. Florida
State
might be capable of more
production with QB Drew Weatherford now seasoned and with a veteran — and
healthy — line in front of him. If the Seminoles are moving the ball, it will
usually be in the hands of WR Greg Carr or RB Lorenzo Booker. Hurricanes FS Brandon Meriweather must use his speed to keep tabs on everyone. QB
Kyle Wright is back for Miami, but
the rest of the offense is in disarray with departures and suspensions. His
best weapon could be TE Greg Olsen, who will try to occupy Florida State LB
Buster Davis.

Here are news and notes from Godspicks.com private clipboard.  They are compiled from hometown newspapers
and the team’s own press releases.

Mississippi-Memphis

Sun Sentinel

Brent Schaeffer is the QB blue chipper at Ole Miss. His
arrival has made Ole Miss relevant again. The team that finished 3-8 last season—its worst record since 1987 — received three votes
in the Associated Press’ preseason poll.
Schaeffer, the Sun-Sentinel’s 2003 Class 6A-5A-4A Player of the
Year in Broward County,
became the first true freshman quarterback in 59 years to start an SEC opener,
playing for Tennessee in 2004. But
he eventually lost the starting job, missed four games after injuring his
collarbone and ran into off-field problems. When he was suspended in April 2005
following an arrest for misdemeanor assault—he later pled guilty to a lesser
charge—Schaeffer left Tennessee
and transferred to College of the Sequoias, a junior college in Visalia,
Calif.
, for a year.  Bet now through Nine. Check
out the latest odds.

DJournal

There will be, Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron believes, a premium on points scored when the
Rebels meet Memphis in the season
opener Sunday.Sounds like Orgeron’s
kind of game. He’s from the defensive side. Could be the
Rebels kind of game, too.
A team with plenty of unknowns has fewer of
them on defense. Memphis, likewise,
is pretty sure of itself on defense. The Tigers return six starters. Memphis
lists eight returning offensive starters but one of them is not DeAngelo
Williams, the All-America running back who accounted for 37 percent of the
Tigers’ total yards and 51 percent of their touchdowns. Like Ole Miss, Memphis
will have a transfer quarterback making his first start. While West hails the
coming of Mills and Brown, Orgeron will need his
patchwork defensive line to hold its own. If that happens, Patrick Willis and
the linebackers should be able to make plays. An experienced secondary should
be an Ole Miss advantage as well.

TCU-Baylor

San Antonio Express-News

Offseason focus has been on the Bears’ new spread offense,
but this will be a test of their defense — which has been historically shaky. TCU returns 10 offensive starters, including bruising backs
Robert Merrill and Aaron Brown.

Waco Tribune

Baylor’s season-ticket sales are up by 10 percent and a
crowd of close to 40,000 is expected.  Bet now through Nine. Check out the latest odds.

Kentucky-Louisville

Ledger Independent

The Cardinals
have won six of the past seven meetings and will likely continue their series
dominance for the foreseeable future. For starters, U of L averages over 49
points per game while playing at home during the Bobby Petrino
era. In his three seasons at the helm of the program, the 45-year-old Petrino has guided the Cardinals to a 29-8 record and
appeared in three bowl games. The only real question mark for the Cardinals
rests on the defensive side of the ball, where several outstanding contributors
from last year’s 9-3 squad must be replaced, including end Elvis Dumervil, who hounded
UK for six sacks in last year’s 31-24 U of
L victory.  Bet now through the Greek,

College Picks from Writers around the Country

Frankly the best picks anywhere are the premium plays at OffshoreInsiders.com but here are
some predictions from around the World Web Web. One
of our favorite sites Eog.com says to take Navy and San Jose
if you know the way.

The Associated Press takes a look at games
involving Top 25 teams
. Many will tell you the state of Florida
is the center of college football and the Orlando
Sentinel has their share of predictions.

Texas would
make claim to being the capital of football expertise and the San
Antonio rag has their say
but with few upsets predicted.

McClatchy Newspapers claimed a 64-51 ATS record last year
and they look at the marquee
games
for couch potatoes.
