percent or less from the floor and 14 of 18 under 40 percent shooting. USC has
held eight teams (SMC, MVSU, LMU,
Kansas, GW,
B-CC, LU and WSU) to their season-low shooting
percentage to that date. USC is holding the opposition to a .352 percentage for
the season, tied with Connecticut
for the second lowest field goal defense. Tonight’s game will be USC’s fifth in the last seven against a ranked opponent and
sixth overall. USC is 3-2 vs. ranked opponents this season. Arizona
will be the fourth ranked opponent USC is facing this season that is coming off
a loss in its previous game.

Fresno-Nevada

Press Notes

Fresno State
ends its three-game road swing when it faces No. 13/15 Nevada.
Fresno State
enters the game with a 13-4 overall record and a 2-2 WAC
mark. Nevada comes in ranked No.
13/15 in the nation and is 16-1 on the year. The Wolf Pack also sit atop the WAC Standings with a
4-0 record. Fresno State
isn’t the only team in the WAC struggling on the
road. As a conference, the road team is 4-14, with Nevada
and New Mexico State
winning two road games each. Fresno State
is 0-2 this season, with road losses at Hawaii
and at San Jose State.
Nevada swept the San
Jose
State
and Hawaii
road trip, while New Mexico State
beat Idaho and Boise
State
on the road last week. Nevada
comes into Thursday’s game with a 16-1 overall record and a No. 13 national
ranking by ESPN/USA Today and a No. 15 ranking by the Associated Press. The
Wolf Pack are 4-0 in WAC
play and they are riding a 14-game WAC winning
streak.

Wake Forest-Duke

Press Notes

Wake Forest,
coming off a pair of disappointing home losses last week, look
for better fortunes on the road. The Demon Deacons, 9-7 overall and 1-3 in the
ACC, lost at home to NC State Saturday, 88-74. Wake
Forest
out-rebounded the Wolfpack,
forced 19 turnovers and shot 53.8 percent in the loss. Duke, 14-3 and 1-2,
broke into the ACC win column Sunday with a 86-63
victory at Miami. The Blue Devils
shot an amazing 68.3 percent, including 81.0 percent in the first half. Duke,
however, has beaten Wake Forest
at Cameron Indoor in each of the previous nine seasons. The last time the
Deacons won in Durham came in Tim
Duncan’s senior year of 1997.During the nine-game losing streak at Cameron
Indoor, Wake’s smallest margin of defeat was 10 points (102-92 in 2005).

Haltime Bettors

Interesting tidbit from the Akron Beacon Journal:
Based on a defensive system that tends to wear down opponents with lots of movement, the Cavs have outscored their last 11 opponents by a total of 63 points after halftime. On the road, where they had been a poor team for the
season’s first six weeks as they searched for consistency, the Cavs have won five of their last seven by outscoring opponents by a total of 59 points in the second halves.
Also
After missing Saturday’s game with tendinitis in his left quadriceps, Larry Hughes said several days of treatment and rest have helped. He was able to take part in Cavs practice Monday at the University of Washington, and he’s hoping the leg will allow him to play against the Sonics tonight.

Press Notes

Following an 80-68 triumph over Western
Michigan
in its Mid-American Conference home opener, Toledo
(7-8, 3-0 MAC) heads back out on the road to face Eastern Michigan
(7-9, 2-1 MAC). The Rockets have taken an early lead in the MAC’s
West Division and are the only team in the MAC that is unbeaten in league play.
UT holds a one-game lead over the Eagles and Central Michigan
(7-8, 2-1 MAC) in the West Division. Keying the Rockets’ unblemished start in
conference play has been a strong defense. UT is leading the MAC in field-goal
percentage defense (39.4) in conference games only, is second in 3PTFG% defense
(25.0) and tied for third in scoring defense (62.7 ppg). Eastern
Michigan

Temple-UMass

Press Notes

Coming off a tremendous 91-84 win over defending A-10
regular-season champion George Washington on Wednesday, the Minutemen host
arch-rival Temple on Saturday at Noon at the Mullins
Center
. UMass
comes into the game with a 12-4 record and a perfect 2-0 mark in A-10 play. The
Minutemen are off the best start since the 1995-96 season
when they won the first 26 games of the season and were ranked No. 1 most of
the year. UMass is seeking its first 3-0 start in
A-10 play since 1997-98 when they started 8-0. The UMass-Temple
rivalry opens a new chapter as the Owls come to Amherst
without their longtime Hall of Fame Coach John Chaney, for the first time in
history. Under new coach Fran Dunphy, the Owls are
6-8 overall and 0-2 in the league, riding a four-game losing streak. The
Minutemen reached the 10-win mark earlier than any point in a season since that
year, when they were 10-0. UMass has been stellar away from the Mullins Center this season with an 8-2 record. Those eight road/neutral
wins are tied for the most in the nation among all teams. No. 12 Butler is 8-1
away from
Indianapolis and Virginia
Commonwealth
has an 8-2 mark like UMass. It
is huge improvement for UMass, which was just 3-13
away from home in 2005-06. UMass has won eight of the
10 games away from home in the first two months. That includes a stretch of
five wins in a row away from Mullins. UMass has won
14 of its last 18 at home.

Cincinnati-South Florida

Press Notes

The University
of Cincinnati
will seek its first
BIG EAST Conference victory of the season and an end to a three-game losing
streak when the Bearcats visit USF on Sunday, Jan.
14. Game time at the USF Sun Dome is 2 p.m. UC enters the
contest with a 9-6 record but has been idle since its 54-42 loss to Rutgers
on Jan. 7 in its league opener. USF is 9-8 overall
and 0-3 in BIG EAST play. The Bulls lost to Louisville,
81-55, on Wednesday. Cincinnati and
USF have played one common opponent. Both have lost
to UAB. UC incurred a 59-57
setback to the Blazers on Dec. 4 while USF fell,
78-62, on Dec. 27. The Bearcats will be out to avert their longest losing
streak in 19 seasons. UC last dropped four in a row
in February of the 1987-88 season.

NFL

Seahawks-Bears

Boston Globe

WR Darrell Jackson (left toe)
was forced out in the third quarter of the Seahawks’ 21-20 wild-card win. Coach
Mike Holmgren didn’t expect D.J.
Hackett (sprained right ankle) to even play vs. Dallas, but he contributed two
catches for 8 yards .WR Deion Branch has four 100-yard
receiving games in the postseason, all with New England . In QB Matt Hasselbeck’s seven games since returning from a right knee
injury, the BC product has topped out at 243 yards passing. The Bears allowed
more than 300 yards in each of their final six regular-season games. CB Marcus Trufant (ankle) is out .The Seattle run defense, which
allowed an average of 152.7 yards the last six games, was ranked 22d. Holmgren has a 12-9 playoff record and is 14-3 vs. the
Bears.

Courier News

At least on paper, the Seattle Seahawks look like the
ideal opponent for the Bears’ running game. That’s because Seattle’s
run defense has been paper thin. The greatest obstacle for the Bears’ running
attack may have been removed Friday when fullback Jason McKie
was given clearance to play by coach Lovie Smith in Sunday’s playoff game after missing most of
two games with a sprained ankle.

Patriots-Chargers

Victoria Times Columnist

Tom Brady is 11-1 in playoff games as a starting
quarterback. Philip Rivers is starting his first.

SF Gate

San Diego
scored an NFL-high 492 points behind Tomlinson and first-year starting quarterback Philip Rivers. New England
held its opponents to 237, second-lowest in the league. Defensive-minded coach
Bill Belichick no doubt will throw something at Rivers that the QB hasn’t seen.
While the Patriots will try to keep marching toward their fourth Super Bowl
appearance in six seasons, the Chargers and their coach, Marty Schottenheimer,
will try to erase some brutal playoff history. The Chargers haven’t won in the
playoffs since stunning Pittsburgh
in the AFC championship game on Jan.
15, 1995
. Counting the Super Bowl wipeout that followed, they’ve
lost three straight in the postseason. And of course, Schottenheimer is 5-12 in
the playoffs, with Cleveland, Kansas
City and San Diego. Should the loss
column hit 13 short of the Super Bowl, he could be fired by general manager A.J. Smith. The Chargers, who won
their last 10 games to finish an NFL-best 14-2, are well aware of the Patriots’
mystique.

NBA

INDIANA +4.5 Dallas

This is one of those examples of a recently refined theory
that has proven extremely accurate especially after back tracking. If one team
has played has played a disproportionate percentage of their games on the road,
and the other at home, the team that has played the fewer home games is
generally undervalued.

Dallas, not as
much, as about 45 percent of their games have been on the road, but Indiana
has only played 41.6 percent of their games at home.

The Pacers, home dogs, are playing decent ball, winning
9-of-13 SU. It goes down to the wire.

Florida-South Carolina

Press Notes

South Carolina,
10-4 and 0-1 in the SEC, returns home to host its SEC home opener by welcoming
the defending NCAA Champion Florida Gators. The No. 2 Gators come in with a
15-2 record, including 2-0 in the SEC. Florida is riding an eight-game winning
streak, while Carolina has dropped
two straight after piecing together a six-game winning streak. The Gamecocks
opened their 16th season of SEC play at Georgia on Wed., Jan 10 and
fell 80-56 in their worst lost in Athens since 2000 (62-90 at Georgia on Jan.
22, 2000). USC is 5-11 in SEC openers, including 1-6 on the road. It was the
first time USC opened the SEC slate against Georgia
during its 16 years in the SEC. The Gators are 2-0 in the SEC with home wins
against Georgia
(67-51, Jan. 6) and Arkansas
(79-72, Jan. 10). USC won the season series last year with a 68-62 win in Columbia
and a 71-67 victory in Gainesville,
but fell 49-47 in the SEC Tournament Championship game. USC is 5-11 in SEC
openers, including 1-6 on the road. It was the first time USC opened the SEC
slate against Georgia
during its 16 years in the SEC. The Gators are 2-0 in the SEC with home wins
against Georgia
(67-51, Jan. 6) and Arkansas
(79-72, Jan. 10). USC had won six
straight, but has dropped the last two (vs. No. 9 Kansas and at Georgia).
It was USC’s first loss to a top 10 team in four
tries. This year USC opened the season with three of the first five on the road
and has tallied a 3-2 record on the road. Carolina
is 7-2 at home.

San Diego-Pepperdine

Press Notes

The Waves, who played 11 of 16 non-conference games on the
road and 13 of their first 18 games away from Firestone Fieldhouse,
enter Saturday’s game with a 4-14 overall record and an
0-2 mark in WCC play. Pepperdine
opened conference play last weekend and fell to Portland
(73-69) and Gonzaga (69-52) in the Pacific Northwest. San
Diego
enters Saturday’s game with a 10-6 mark and is
0-1 in WCC play after falling 103-100 to San
Francisco
in double overtime last week. The Toreros
defeated UC Riverside, 78-62, on Wednesday. San
Diego
is averaging 74.1 points a game while allowing
69.9 points a contest.

Utah-New Mexico

Press Notes

Two programs in unfamiliar territory square off Saturday
at The Pit/Bob King Court in Albuquerque.
New Mexico and Utah,
both 0-3 in Mountain Western Conference play and saddled with losing streaks.
The Lobos (11-7) are 0-3 in league play for only the second time since the
1960-61 Skyline Conference season. The 1979-80 UNM
team began 0-4 in the Western Athletic Conference. Utah
(5-11) has not started a conference season 0-3 since 1952-53, also in the
Skyline. The Utes were picked to finish 4th in the MWC.

New Mexico
has lost four straight after a painful 65-57 loss at 18th-ranked Air
Force on Tuesday. The Lobos let a 21-point lead evaporate as the Falcons
outscored UNM 40-7 during one stretch, including 21
straight points in the second half. UNM is 6-7
following a 5-0 start to the season. After Tuesday’s 73-57 loss at Colorado
State
, Utah
is 5-11 overall and
has lost five in a row and six of seven. The Utes are 1-7 away from home and
0-5 on opponents’ home floors this season. New Mexico
is 10-1 at home and is 43-4 in The Pit since the 2004-05 season.
Moreover, UNM has not endured a four-game losing skid
in conference play since 2000-01 when it lost at home to Wyoming, then fell at BYU, Utah and Air Force. The last time for consecutive
conference losses in The Pit was five years ago to Utah
and San Diego State
in 2002. The Lobos lost to Colorado State
at home last Saturday. Under head coach Richie McCay, New Mexico
is 4-0 against Utah in Albuquerque.
Two of the last three victories here came against ranked Ute teams, including a
65-54 decision in 2005 that stopped Utah’s
18-game winning streak.

The Minutemen
reached the 10-win mark earlier than any point in a season since that year,
when they were 10-0. UMass has been stellar away from the Mullins Center this season with an 8-2 record. Those eight road/neutral
wins are tied for the most in the nation among all teams. No. 12 Butler is 8-1
away from
Indianapolis and Virginia
Commonwealth
has an 8-2 mark like UMass. It
is huge improvement for UMass, which was just 3-13
away from home in 2005-06. UMass has won eight of the
10 games away from home in the first two months. That includes a stretch of
five wins in a row away from Mullins. UMass has won
14 of its last 18 at home.

Cincinnati-South Florida

Press Notes

The University
of Cincinnati
will seek its first
BIG EAST Conference victory of the season and an end to a three-game losing
streak when the Bearcats visit USF on Sunday, Jan.
14. Game time at the USF Sun Dome is 2 p.m. UC enters the
contest with a 9-6 record but has been idle since its 54-42 loss to Rutgers
on Jan. 7 in its league opener. USF is 9-8 overall
and 0-3 in BIG EAST play. The Bulls lost to Louisville,
81-55, on Wednesday. Cincinnati and
USF have played one common opponent. Both have lost
to UAB. UC incurred a 59-57
setback to the Blazers on Dec. 4 while USF fell,
78-62, on Dec. 27. The Bearcats will be out to avert their longest losing
streak in 19 seasons. UC last dropped four in a row
in February of the 1987-88 season.

Wisconsin Milwaukee-Cleveland State

Press Notes

Cleveland State
returns home for the first time in the new year to
start a three-game league homestand. The Vikings open
the stretch against three-time defending Horizon League champion
UW-Milwaukee. Vikings have played better
than their 6-11 overall and 0-4 league mark shows, owning the halftime lead in
12 of the 17 games this season. CSU is coming off a 65-53 loss at UW-Green
Bay
on Jan. 6, a game which saw the
Vikings fall behind after having a 13-point halftime lead. UW-Milwaukee (4-13,
1-3) has struggled after losing all five starters off last year’s 22-9 team.
The Panthers split their two league games last week, including a 65-64 overtime win over Detroit
on Jan. 4. After using the same starting lineup and player rotation in the
first 11 games, the Vikings made some changes over the last five games to help
offset the loss of senior Victor Morris (9.7 ppg, 2.5 apg)
to a foot injury.

Bowling Green-Ohio

Press Notes

If the first weekend is any indication (three games
decided by a combined eight points), the battle for the MAC East title could
emerge as one of the best races in recent history. Bowling
Green
and Ohio
will meet for the 119th time on Thursday night. BGSU,
the most improved team in the MAC thus far, is 10-4 and 1-0 and coming off a
74-73 victory at home over Buffalo.
Ohio, also 10-4 and 1-0, defeated
Akron 77-72 last Saturday. A big
reason for the early season success for BGSU has been
the improved defensive effort of the Falcons. Last year, BGSU
allowed 71.4 points per game on 45.7% shooting from the field. This year, BGSU leads the MAC in field goal percentage defense (38.9%)
and is fourth in scoring defense allowing 64.0 points per game. Ohio
returns three starters from last year’s team and has several key performers
back from the 2005 MAC Tournament Championship team. Akron
transfer Bubba Walther has had an immediate impact averaging 15 points per
game. Sophomore Jerome Tillman is averaging 14.8 points and 7.9 rebounds,
junior Leon Williams is contributing 14.4 points and 8.9 boards, and senior
Whitney Davis is averaging 12.2 points.

Washington-Stanford

Press Notes

The Stanford men’s basketball team (9-4,
1-2 Pac-10) return
to the Bay Area to host conference foe Washington
(11-4, 1-3). The Cardinal are 2-2 since returning from the holiday break and
are coming off a hard fought road win (76-75) at Virginia. Huskies enter
Thursday’s contest with an 11-4 overall record and a 1-3 mark in league play.
Last week, UW split with the Arizona
schools, beating ASU and falling to Arizona.
Washington ranks 11th nationally in scoring with an average of
84.8 points per game.
Stanford holds a 66-58 lead in the all-time series
that began in 1916, including wins in 15 of the last 20 meetings against Washington.
The Huskies lost in their last 13 visits to Maples Pavilion.

Louisiana Tech-Boise

News Star

After a 2-0 start in the 2006-07 Western Athletic
Conference season, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (4-10; 2-0 WAC)
will continue league play tonight at 8:05 against the Boise State Broncos (7-6;
1-1 WAC). Since joining the WAC
in 2001, the Bulldogs and the Broncos have battled 11 times with the Tech
winning eight. Last season in the conference opener, Tech’s Paul Millsap had to
hit a last-second three pointer to get past Boise
in Idaho.

NY Jets-Patriots

Connecticut Sports

Patriots coach Bill Belichick
said Wednesday that safety Rodney Harrison is out of Sunday’s Jets-Patriots
playoff game. Harrison, 34, who returned to the lineup Dec. 24 against the
Jaguars after missing six games with a broken shoulder blade, sustained
ligament damage to his right knee in the second quarter of a 40-23 win over the
Titans Sunday in Nashville, Tenn.

Newsday

The Jets trudged through the season, overcoming bad losses
to the Browns and Bills, earning emotional wins over the Patriots and Dolphins,
and now head into the playoffs. Finally, this team gets some respect. But then comes the nine-point spread from Vegas,
even though the two Jets-Patriots games this season were decided by an average
of five points, one of them a Jets win, and five of the last eight meetings
were decided by a touchdown or less. Following closely behind are the
statistical analyses, pointing out that the Jets are ranked 25th in
overall offense, 20th in overall defense and 24th in
rushing defense.

Giants-Eagles

Memphis Commercial Appeal

Jeremy Shockey’s swollen left
ankle has improved considerably and there is a good chance the Pro Bowl tight
end will play for the New York Giants on Sunday in the NFC wild card game
against the Philadelphia Eagles. Shockey had a team-high 66 catches for 623
yards and seven touchdowns.

Gainesville Sun

A funk that lasted into late November saw Philadelphia
drop five of six to fall below .500, but more importantly, the team lost star
quarterback Donovan McNabb to a season-ending knee injury. Garcia, though, went
on to lead the Eagles to four consecutive victories – he barely played in Week
17 while Philadelphia won a fifth
straight – and a 10-6 record to win the NFC East.

CFB

Ohio-Southern Miss

Associated Press

Ohio Bobcats into their first bowl game since 1968, facing
Southern Miss in the GMAC Bowl Sunday night. The Golden Eagles are playing in a
bowl game for the fifth consecutive year and ninth time in 10 years. The Bobcats lost 31-10 to Central
Michigan
in the Mid American Conference championship game to end a
seven-game winning streak. Likewise, Southern Miss fell in the Conference USA
title game, 34-20 to Houston. Ohio
turned to McRae and the ground attack after a 2-3 start, and he wound up
earning first-team All-MAC honors with 1,215 yards and 15 touchdowns. The
Bobcats are averaging 211 yards rushing in the past eight games, failing to
reach that number only in the league title game.

CBB

Michigan State-Indiana

WLIX

Tom Izzo announced Saturday that
Freshman guard Raymar Morgan
has been cleared to play for Michigan
State
on Sunday afternoon in Bloomington.
Morgan has missed the last 5 weeks with a stress reaction in his shin. He will
not start and it’s not clear how much he will play. With Morgan and Maurice
Joseph back the Spartans back court depth is finally improving.

Syracuse-Marquette

Press Notes

The Orange men’s basketball team (11-4, 0-1) will play its
second straight game against a ranked opponent on Sunday, Jan. 7 when it visits
#15/21 Marquette (13-3, 0-1) for an 8:00 EST tip off at the Bradley Center.
Sunday’s game marks the second road game for the Orange
and the third away from the Carrier DomeDue to
various injuries and the departure of freshman Mike Jones,
the Orange used just seven players
against #10 Pittsburgh in the
conference opener on Jan. 4. Despite limited bodies, Coach Boeheim’s squad gave the Panthers
all they could handle, leading the entire first half before Pittsburgh
pulled away in the final minutes of the second period for a 74-66 triumph.
