Sports Betting’s Must Read Not Karen Sypher Photos or Mary Jane Clark

Screw the Karen Sypher photos, the top sports handicappers are churning out winning betting pick after winner. If only Rick Pitino wife Joanne Minardi could say the same.

The controversial spread betting ending to the Hall-of-Fame game between the Titans and Bills notwithstanding, the true beginning of NFL betting season begins tomorrow. Sure the ladies book clubs say that Mary Jane Clark is a must-read, but all NFL bettors know they must consult the Tailgate Party with preseason primer news, notes, player rotations and more.

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees close out their series with Toronto, the Cards take on the Reds, and Pedro Martinez debuts for the Phillies.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit  . . .

A.J. Burnett (10-5, 3.67 ERA) will take the hill for the Yankees on Wednesday afternoon as they complete a home series against the Blue Jays and Ricky Romero (10-5, 3.66 ERA). Righthander Burnett dominated the Red Sox in his last trip to the mound, holding the rival club scoreless on one hit over his 7 2-3 innings of work. Lefthander Romero was beaten by the Orioles in his last start, surrendering four earned runs on five hits over his six innings pitched that night.

Also on the American League schedule for Wednesday: Oakland at Baltimore, Tampa Bay at the Angels, Texas at Cleveland, Detroit at Boston, Kansas City at Minnesota, and the White Sox at Seattle. Mark Buehrle (11-6, 3.89 ERA) will try to snap his three-game losing streak for the ChiSox; the lefthander hasn’t won since pitching his perfect game on July 23. The M’s counter with righthander Felix Hernandez (12-4, 2.84 ERA), with Seattle a stellar 9-1 in his last 10 outings.

Speaking of best buy, there is never one better than Center of the Handicapping Universe. Exactly one week after hitting the MLB Game of the Year on the underdog Cubs, GodsTips wins the American League Game of the Year on Anaheim, a 6-0 winner. This means the two Games of the Year, both underdogs, win by a combined 12-3.

It’s winning days 10-of-12 following last night’s 4-2 winning night. GodsTips won’t win the Teen Choice Awards, but those old enough to be Miley Cyrus parents have been winning with us since the scorephone days.

The best part is tomorrow, the NFL goes into full swing. Start out with a day Wise Guy and a day Major. The night card has a Dandy Dog moneyline and a runline winner. Dandy dogs are moneyline dogs of 140 or more (includes runline getting back 140 or more). Click now to purchase

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

The Phillies will send Pedro Martinez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday as the righthander makes his season debut on the road against the Cubs and Jeff Samardzija (1-1, 6.29 ERA). Martinez had been pitching in the minor leagues in recent weeks; Jamie Moyer was sent to the bullpen to make room for him in the rotation. Righthander Samardzija has appeared in 16 games so far this season for the Cubs, all in relief; he replaces injured Carlos Zambrano.

Rounding out the National League slate for Wednesday: the Mets at Arizona, the Dodgers at San Francisco, Houston at Florida, Washington at Atlanta, San Diego at Milwaukee, Pittsburgh at Colorado, and Cincinnati at St. Louis. The Reds will send Homer Bailey (2-3, 7.11 ERA) to the hill in that matchup; the righthander has allowed 10 earned runs over his last 11 1-3 innings. Chris Carpenter (11-3, 2.26 ERA) is set for the Cardinals; the righthander has won his last three outings.

Thursday, August 13

Arizona-Pittsburgh

Arizona prized rookie Chris “Beanie” Wells is doubtful though he is getting close to full activity in practice. This is of course the Super Bowl rematch. The Cardinals will also be extra careful with WR Anquan Boldin and will likely not play because of minor swelling in his knees.

Redskins-Ravens

Second year WRs Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly have been slowed by nagging injuries, but both “have to play. They’ve got some distance to come,” head coach Jim Zorn said of the last year’s second round picks. They are competing for the No. 2 job behind Santana Moss, also slowed by minor injuries. If both youngsters are healthy for Thursday, each will likely get long looks.

Patriots-Eagles

Eagles backup QB Kevin Kolb and former Pro Bowl DE Trent Cole will both miss Thursday’s game. The Eagles already lost starting MLB Stewart Bradley and rookie TE Cornelius Ingram for the year. Kolb likely was counted on for a lot of snaps Thursday.

Philadelphia will likely be without their best OL Shawn Andrews who has missed a lot of practice time because of a bad back.

Though Pats head coach Bill Belichick has been his usual secretive self, starting QB Tom Brady believes he will get more than “a guest appearance.” Recovering from a season ending injury, Brady has not missed any practice time.

Friday, August 14

Broncos-49ers

Top draft WR Michael Crabtree is a holdout for the Niners. Denver head coach Josh McDaniels is making his debut and will be breaking in a new offense with the departure of disgruntled signal caller Jay Cutler.

San Francisco has a major QB battle between Shaun Hill and Alex Smith. Head coach Mike Singletary may not announce until Thursday who starts, but both will get ample playing time.

Bob Warner of NFL betting blog Lines-Maker.com said that reports are that Smith has matured and relaxed. “Look for his coming out party Thursday night,” the betting guru promises.

Denver‘s defensive coordinator Mike Nolan was the Niners head coach until he was fired late last year.

Minnesota-Indianapolis

The Vikings have a major QB battle as Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson, two mistake prone signal callers will contend.

Colts head coach Jim Caldwell will be making his debut. Indianapolis LT Tony Ugoh should have a chip on his shoulder. He started 23 games the last two years, but lost his starting job.

Indianapolis starting QB Peyton Manning will get little playing time, backup Jim Sorgi is out meaning rookie QB Curtis Painter will see significant playing time. Head coach Caldwell said he has not decided on how long front line players will play.

Rams-Jets

Two coaches are making their debut: Rex Ryan for the Jets and Steve Spagnuolo for the Rams.

The Jets will be without four starters: CB Darrelle Revis, NT Kris Jenkins, C Nick Mangold and RT Damien Woody. FB Tony Richardson is questionable. The Rams No. 1 WR Donnie Avery is out. He caught 53 passes as a rookie last year. They have very little proven talent at WR. They have nine receivers battling for spots behind Avery. Combined, they caught 43 passes for 524 years last year.

The Rams are also installing the West Coast offense under new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, so the injury to Avery is a major one. Check out the Covers Experts picks.

Saturday, August 15

Bears-Bills

Buffalo has one game under their belt. Bears three-time Pro Bowler Tommie Harris is doubtful with knee and hamstring troubles. He was second on Chicago in sacks last year.

Browns-Packers

Many NFL gamblers like betting on teams with major quarterback battles in the preseason. Not is more intense than in Cleveland where Derek Anderson is clashing with Brady Quinn. Head coach Eric Mangini said there will be no rotating in the regular season, so a clear-cut No. 1 job is up for grabs. Quinn has the early lead according to all reports.

Magini is making his Browns debut but of course has head coaching experience. Cleveland has a lot of question marks at WR behind No. 1 wideout Braylon Edwards.

Falcons-Lions

Detroit‘s Jim Schwartz will be making his coaching debut. Add to that the Lions are coming off an 0-16 season, many would argue if any team desperately needs preseason wins to change the culture, it’s the Lions.

Pro Bowler Roddy White finally ended his holdout and starting practicing Monday. White says he wants to play in this game, and Atlanta could use him. Up-and-coming receiver Harry Douglas is out for the year. Atlanta‘s three best receivers behind White are Michael Jenkins, Eric Weems who has one career catch, and Brian Finneran, who hasn’t started a game since 2005.

Head coach Mike Smith said he will monitor White’s progress before deciding on his status for the preseason opener.

Lions DE Jared DeVries, who started 29 games the last three years, is out for the year. Star wide receiver Calvin Johnson is questionable with a jammed thumb.

Seahawks-Chargers

Jim Mora Jr. will be in his first game as head coach for the Seahawks, but he was assistant head coach for Mike Holmgrem and was previously the head man in Atlanta, so the “new coach theory” may not apply so much here.

Chargers superstar LaDainian Tomlinson said he will play more this preseason then in the past, but he will only get minimal action if any against Seattle.

Buccaneers-Titans

Tennessee will have a game under their belts as they play in the Hall-of-Fame game. It marks the debut for Tampa head man Raheem Morris.

Tampa‘s Antonio Bryant, who caught 83 passes last year, is out.

Sunday, August 16

Panthers-Giants

Four time Pro Bowl WR Steve Smith is out for Carolina.

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees take on the Blue Jays, the Red Sox look to tame the Tigers, and the Dodgers clash with the division-rival Giants.

PGA odds…

Get the odds preview of the 2009 PGA Championship, plus all the live lines updated after each round up until the final round of the golf majors.  Tiger Woods is of course heavily favored followed by Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit  . . .

The Yankees return to action on Tuesday night as they open a home series against the Blue Jays. Joba Chamberlain (8-2, 3.73 ERA) will get the ball for New York in that contest; the righthander has won four straight starts, and he beat the Red Sox in his last trip to the mound (four runs in five innings). The Blue Jays will counter with Scott Richmond (6-6, 3.97 ERA), who has lost two starts in a row. The righthander gave up six runs in three innings against the A’s in his last outing.

Also on the American League schedule for Tuesday: Oakland at Baltimore, Texas at Cleveland, Kansas City at Minnesota, Tampa Bay at the Angels, the White Sox at Seattle, and Detroit at Boston. Rick Porcello (10-7, 4.30 ERA) will make that start for the Tigers; the righthander beat the Orioles last time out, and his team is 7-3 in his last 10 starts. Junichi Tazawa (0-1, 10.80 ERA) is slated to start for Boston; the righthander has made just one bullpen appearance this year.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

J.A. Happ (8-2, 2.74 ERA) will clash with Rich Harden (7-7, 4.41 ERA) on Tuesday night as the Phillies begin a set in Chicago against the Cubs. Lefthander Happ dazzled the Rockies in his last trip to the mound, tossing nine shutout innings and giving up just four hits (while fanning 10). Righthander Harden took a hard-luck loss against the Reds in his most recent trip to the mound, as he surrendered three runs (two earned) over his six innings of work.

Elsewhere around the National League on Tuesday it’ll be Houston at Florida, Washington at Atlanta, San Diego at Milwaukee, Cincinnati at St. Louis, Pittsburgh at Colorado, the Mets at Arizona, and the Dodgers at San Francisco. Randy Wolf (5-6, 3.55 ERA) is on tap for Los Angeles in that contest; the lefthander gave up four runs in seven innings versus the Braves last time out. Joe Martinez (2-0, 5.87 ERA) will try to remain unbeaten in a start for the Giants.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the WNBA has three games on tap for Tuesday, with Detroit at Washington, New York at Los Angeles, and Sacramento at San Antonio. The Monarchs remain the coldest team in the league, having lost two straight games to sit at 5-17 straight-up and 6-15-1 against-the-spread. The Silver Stars are a middling 10-11 both SU and ATS on season; San Antonio beat Minnesota 89-87 last time out, with Becky Hammon pouring in a team-high 22 points in the victory.
