MLB Betting – Tuesday Baseball Picks

NFL betting is officially underway after the Bills and Titans opened the preseason with the Hall of Fame game Sunday night. But that doesn’t mean you have to stop betting on baseball! This week offers some important matchups with playoff implications. Let’s make some Tuesday picks.

Detroit Tigers @ Boston Red Sox
Tuesday August 11, 7:10 p.m. ET
Rick Porcello (10-7, 4.30) vs Junichi Tazawa (0-1, 10.80)

The Red Sox are at home, but they’re slumping horribly and starting a rookie pitcher, so it’s possible that they’ll be slight offshore sportsbook underdogs on Tuesday. Time to take advantage. Historically, new pitchers from Japan often baffle hitters upon arriving in the big leagues, as scouts know little about them. Tazawa hasn’t started well but I think he can surprise against the free-swinging Tigers. Rick Porcello is much more of a household name, but he hasn’t pitched too well over the last few months and the Red Sox beat him up once this season already. Go with Boston.

Best betting management pick: Red Sox

Tampa Bay Rays @ Los Angeles Angels

Tonight, 10:05 p.m. ET

David Price (5-4, 4.91) vs Ervin Santana (4-6, 7.20)

The over/under for this battle between powerhouse offenses should look like an NFL game. David Price is a nightmare on the road, going 0-3 with an 8.20 ERA this season, yet Ervin Santana is even worse at home, going 0-4 with a hilarious 12.38 ERA. Something has to give, and I’d lean toward
Tampa in my MLB predictions. We at least know that the current Ray regulars really have Santana figured out, particularly B.J. Upton, who has a .467 lifetime average against him. Pick the Rays to prevail in a slugfest.

Best betting management pick: Rays

2009 PGA Championship Odds: Tiger Woods is 3/2

While MLB free picks is the most immediate concern of sports bettors, betting on golf odds is second only to UFC betting as the fastest growing form of sports wagering.

As long as Tiger Woods is entered, the only question about the Vegas betting odds of a golf tournament is how much would is the favorite by. The betting line for the 2009 USPGA Championship sees Woods at 3/2.

After winning the Bridgestone Invitational by five shots, Woods has now won 22 of his last 40 starts going back to the 2006 British Open. “That’s the equivalent of a baseball player hitting .500—not .400 mind you—but .500 for an entire season,” say KJR in Seattle‘s morning host Mitch Levy.

Overall, it’s the 70th Tour event victory by Woods. Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington are a distant second—and distant is an understatement—at 20/1 each. Lee Westwood is 28/1 followed by a cluster at 33/1: Hunter Mahan, Retief Goosen, Steve Stricker, and Sergio Garcia.

“Woods is one of the mentally toughest athletes in history and all the stars are aligned for a victory here,” says Brian Kayma master of scores and odds website Lines-Maker.com. He adds, “Woods is in a nice groove winning the Buick Open and at Firestone Country Club in successive weeks. Plus after the disaster at Turnberry, he will be on a personal mission,” concludes Kayma.

Woods miraculously missed the cut at the British Open at Turnberry in the last golf major.

Monday MLB Pick Blue Jays-Yankees Plus Betting Angles

The New York Yankees are in a huge groove as they host the Toronto Blue Jays. Sergio Mitre is -140 to Marc Rzepczynski.

As so often happens, Rzepczynski was impressive in his first three starts, but has returned to his mean in his last three sporting a 5.17 ERA in his last three starts in addition to giving up two unearned runs.

Toronto is 1-5 when he goes to the hill for -4.6 units including 0-3 on the road with him. The Yankees are 3-1 with Sergio Mitre.

The Yankees are sizzling winning seven straight hitting .305 with an on base percentage of .377 in that span.

A computer system that favors the Bronx Bombers is that favorites of 150 or less that average four walks per game or less offensively, after allowing two runs or less in three straight games are 69-21 for +42.3 units. That includes 16-6 the last three years +8.2 units.

New York is 7-1 the last eight in the series.  They have been successful in bringing teams back down to earth as they are 8-1 their last nine against teams that scored five or more runs in their last game. They are 42-15 at home against teams with a losing record.

Toronto has dropped 7-of-8 to teams with a home winning percentage of .600 or better. They have failed in 25-of-35 to the AL East.

Free pick: NY Yankees -140.

Now here are some more Monday quick hits for bettors:

Edwin Jackson of Detroit is 0-4 all-time at Fenway Park with a 7.14 ERA.

The Cubs are 4-20 as an underdog this year -15.4 units.

Anaheim is 35-11 +24.1 unit the last two years in double revenge.

Oakland’s Jeremy Guthrie has a 4-16 team mark -14.8 units the last three years against teams that average .9 or fewer home runs per game.

The White Sox Gavin Floyd has come up big when his team needed it the most. His team mark is 19-7 following a team loss the last two years for +12.8 units.

Boston’s Brad Penny has a sensational 21-10 team record as a home underdog since 1997 for +15.2 units.

Units/won lost are based on one-unit per bet. Personal record is a pitcher’s record in his decisions including relief appearances.  Team record is how the team did in his starts whether or not he was involved in the decision.
