Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Wednesday offers up a pair of college football games, with Miami-Ohio (-10.5) at winless Akron, and Bowling Green at Toledo (-10). The Falcons (2-8 SU, 6-4 ATS) were beaten 24-21 at home by Miami-Ohio last time out, with Matt Schilz throwing for 176 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for Bowling Green in that game. The Rockets (6-4 SU, 5-5 ATS) are coming off an ugly 65-30 road loss to Northern Illinois in which Terrance Owens passed for 186 yards with two touchdowns and one INT, and Adonis Thomas ran for 152 yards and two scores. The total for that game is listed at 54.

Bowling Green vs. Toledo Bet Breakdown

Bowling Green vs. Toledo. Toledo is -10.5 with a total of 55 according to the point spread. The game is on ESPN2.

We contrast the key success indicators used by pro bettors against both the college football schedule and in successful wagering on the NFL.

The superior team in terms of rushing yards per attempt on offense is Toledo by 2.1.

Also on offense, when it comes to yards per reception the figures give the eminence to Toledo by 1.0.

Vegas sharps exploit yards per point. Data says the more adroit team in that classification is Bowling Green by 1.2.

We will look at the other side of the ball in a moment, but where is the football betting experts pick against the spread on this contest? Stevie Vincent is all about the “less is more” dictum. The better team at stopping the air attack according to passing yards per completion is neither as it’s a dead heat.

Yards per point dictates the shrewder defense belongs to Toledo by .3.

College Basketball Free Picks Against the Spread

While Live streaming TV of Brazil vs. Argentina has many glued to the computer, as does gossip about Tony Parker cheating leading to the Eva Longoria divorce

Matt Rivers says your Wednesday comp play is on Columbia +19 against St. John’s.

Of course St. John’s of the Big East is a billion times better than the Ivy League’s Columbia Lions but there are a pair of factors making me feel confident that the well inferior team will be able to do enough to cover this large double digit number.

Steve Lavin’s team is too talented to actually lose this game as they are led by a stud in DJ Kennedy and some other experienced guys like Dwight Hardy, Paris Horne, Justin Brownlee, Sean Evans, Justin Burrell and Malik Boothe. But the Red Storm just played all the way across the country against St. Mary’s less than 48 hours ago and now after flying back home have to get right back on the court and face a team that provides little motivation whatsoever. The Johnie’s are going to be excited to face the Villanova’s and Syracuse’s and Georgetown’s of the world but not Columbia and in the college world motivation can be more important than sheer talent. Who the heck scheduled this that’s what I want to know.

Today’s visitor is playing up a ton of classes here but the travel is obviously very little and Noruwa Agho, who can shoot the lights out, and the Lions should be the fresher team on the floor. They also played on Monday but that was much closer to home in the easy 108-74 triumph over Maryland Eastern-Shore. Last Friday these guys fell at LaSalle by 11 and the Explorers should be alright this season as evidenced by the cover on Tuesday in Waco against an explosive and really good Baylor Bears squad.

In the end the Johnnie’s are too talented and skilled and strong and big and deep and everything. But the fatigue factor and the motivational factor is on our side making me believe this thing ends in a Columbia cover.

College football news and notes are up for some of the marquee games this weekend.  Knowing that they’ve become the top site sports handicappers in the world by insisting their betting experts hear both sides of an argument, OffshoreInsiders.com presents a counter point to the Cam Newton reports that a bombshell is forthcoming.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The lone college football game on the schedule for Tuesday has Ohio at Temple. The Bobcats (7-3 SU, 6-3 ATS) have won six straight games, doubling up on Buffalo 34-17 at home last time out. Boo Jackson threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns with one interception for Ohio in that win. The Owls (8-2 SU, 7-3 ATS) are riding a four-game winning streak, beating Kent State 28-10 on the road last time out. Mike Gerardi passed for 368 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Temple in that game. Both Ohio and Temple have 5-1 records in the East Division of the Mid-American conference.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are seven games on the NBA’s schedule for Tuesday, with Atlanta at Indiana, Toronto at Washington, the Lakers at Milwaukee, Portland at Memphis, Chicago at Houston, New York at Denver, and Philadelphia at Cleveland. The Sixers (2-8 SU, 5-4-1 ATS) are coming off a 116-93 loss in San Antonio, with Jrue Holiday picking up a team-high 16 points in the defeat. Louis Williams added 13 points off the bench for Philadelphia that game. The Cavaliers (4-5 SU, 4-5 ATS) fell 99-85 at home to Indiana last game, as Antawn Jamison tossed in 19 points. Ramon Sessions added 17 points that day for the Cavs, who are just 1-4 through five home matchups so far this season.

As well, there are many ranked teams in action around college basketball on Tuesday, including a couple at the Preseason NIT: Marist at No. 6 Villanova, and Belmont at No. 24 Tennessee. Other games involving ranked teams on Tuesday: LaSalle at No. 17 Baylor, No. 22 Virginia Tech at No. 3 Kansas State, Detroit at No. 10 Syracuse, Miami-Ohio at No. 1 Duke, No. 16 Butler at Louisville, South Carolina at No. 2 Michigan State, Eastern Washington at No. 17 Washington, No. 25 San Diego State at No. 11 Gonzaga, and No. 4 Ohio State at No. 9 Florida. Finally, the three NHL games on tap for Tuesday are Philadelphia at Montreal, Anaheim at Dallas, and Nashville at Toronto. The 7-5-3 Predators are coming off a 4-3 home shootout win over the Blackhawks on Saturday night, with Shane O’Brien, Shea Weber, and Cody Franson scoring for Nashville in regulation time. Phil Kessel scored his eighth goal of the year for Toronto in that loss, while Fredrik Sjostrom and Mikhail Grabovski also had markers. J-S Giguere made 27 saves.

NBA Free Picks

While OffshoreInsiders.com absolutely stands firmly behind the story that Cam Newton will bring down the Auburn program in historic fashion, the website has become the best source for college football point spread information by hearing all sides.

Some say the Auburn downfall regarding Cam and Cecil Newton is a fig of our sources imagination.  Okay. We will scrutinize the NFL power rankings week 11 now and say I told you so later.

In giving equal time to the pros and cons, Matt Rivers has a free NBA pick against the spread for tonight on the NY Knicks getting eight points to Denver.

I never really mind the Knicks when getting a lot back because, no matter how underachieving and dreadful they can look at times, there is some talent on Mike D’Antoni’s squad. New York has recently been a total enigma as they can be really good at times and then completely wet the bed and look like a JV team on other nights. The Knicks do have a tough task tonight against Carmelo and the high powered Nuggets in the Mile High City but I’ll take my chances on these fresher visitors with the Nuggs on a tough back-to-back after just trying to run with Steve Nash and the Suns in the loss at Phoenix last night.

The top NBA betting experts know that the Knicks have dropped five in a row on the court and at the window but that makes this the perfect time to back Amare Stoudemire and the fellas. When all hope appears lost this team a lot of the time somehow finds a way to rebound. This has been the way in recent years as the franchise waited for Lebron to potentially come to the Big Apple and I can see history repeat itself today.

The 3-7 New Yorkers have an upside with Stoudemire, Gallinari, Felton, Chandler, Douglas and a few others and are ripe for the picking at the very least to hang in this game against what can be a semi winded Nuggets group.

‘Melo, Nene and Billups lead a Denver team that is certainly very solid at the Pepsi Center and did just have a monster win over Kobe and the LA Lakers in that last home game. But right now with the whole ‘Melo situation and playing for a second straight day I just don’t trust these guys as much and can see them lay an egg in a possible loss to a fresher Knicks team.

College Football News and Notes For Bettors

The college football betting action continues to heat up with some major schools hanging by a thread in their respective conference races. Here’s some news and notes for the key matchups.

(14) Virginia Tech (8-2) vs (24) Miami (FL) (7-3)

The Hokies continue to look unstoppable in ACC play (and betting), where they’re 6-0 this season. Virginia Tech relied on its stout D and ground game to take down North Carolina on the road last week. The Hokies seem comfortable rotating Ryan Williams and Darren Evans in the backfield, with neither guy taking on true feature back status. Defensive end Chris Draper (undisclosed) and cornerback Chris Hill (ankle) are both questionable for Saturday’s tilt with Miami.

Is there a quarterback controversy in Miami? Randy Shannon insists that Jacory Harris will get the job back as soon as doctors clear him to return from his concussion. But Stephen Morris was solid again last week, throwing for 230 yards and a score with no picks. Running back Damien Berry returned from illness last week and is back to full strength.

(8) Ohio State (9-1) vs (21) Iowa (7-3)

Don’t be surprised if Dan “Boom” Herron gets the rock often for Ohio State this weekend. His 190 rushing yards last week were instrumental in the Buckeyes avoiding a sportsbook upset and scoring 35 unanswered points to beat Penn State after trailing by 11. Herron has scored in nine straight games. Defensive back Christian Bryant had surgery to clean out a foot infection and will miss the rest of the season, though he could return for a bowl game.

What happened to Iowa’s defense last week? The Hawkeyes blew a 10-point lead to Northwestern in the fourth quarter and allowed 419 total yards. Can they survive Ohio State’s ground attack? Senior linebacker Jeff Tarpinian suffered another stinger last week and could miss Saturday’s crucial game.

(13) Arkansas (8-2) vs (22) Mississippi State (7-3)

Arkansas’ offense has rolled all season but last week’s 58-point, 577-yard outburst against UTEP suggests the Razorbacks have reached a new level. Knile Davis ran for 182 yards last week and is really opening up space for Ryan Mallett, who threw for five touchdown passes and ran for one more last Saturday. Mississippi State could be in trouble this week; it ranks 79th against the pass.

Equal Time: OffshoreInsiders Presents Response to Cam Newton Story

OffshoreInsiders.com absolutely stands by our sources that Cam Newton’s days are numbered at Auburn.

However, we did get a counter argument, so we will be happy to give equal time to a well-articulated response, our feelings hurt about being called “idiots” notwithstanding.  Here is the other side. We report, you decide.

Before we begin, I’ll make a few clarifications here on issues that a lot of people seem to be confused about , including the idiots who wrote this article and their so called sources……FACTS ARE BELOW.

1.         Contrary to what the NCAA has said, there is no section that indicates the act of solicitation of extra benefits would constitute a violation. This means, even if Cecil Newton did try to solicit benefits from Mississippi State, as long as Cecil or Cam didn’t receive any actual benefits, Cam is eligible to play.

2.         Contrary to what people believe, an agent has to be someone who entered in written or oral agreement with the student-athlete him/herself—not the parents, friends, neighbors, etc. This means Kenny Rogers is not an agent of Cam Newton since, according to Kenny Rogers himself, he never spoke to Cam up until the MSU campus visit.

3.         Contrary to what people believe, ineligibility only applies to the institution where the violation occurred, not every single NCAA member institution. This means, even if violations did happen, as long as the violations didn’t happen at Auburn, Cam is eligible to play for Auburn.

With these three points in mind, let’s start going through this boring document:

10.1 UNETHICAL CONDUCT

Unethical conduct by a prospective or enrolled student-athlete or a current or former institutional staff member (e.g., coach, professor, tutor, teaching assistant, student manager, student trainer) may include, but is not limited to, the following: (Revised: 1/10/90, 1/9/96, 2/22/01)

© Knowing involvement in offering or providing a prospective or an enrolled student-athlete an improper inducement or extra benefit or improper financial aid; (Revised: 1/9/96)

The Unethical Conduct section deals with the offering of extra benefits to a prospective student-athlete, not the solicitation of extra benefits on behalf of the student-athlete. This means it’s not really against the rules for Kenny Rogers, Cecil Newton or even Cam Newton himself to “ask for” extra benefits, but it’d be a violation if anyone at MSU offered such benefits.

12.1.2 Amateur Status. An individual loses amateur status and thus shall not be eligible for intercollegiate competition in a particular sport if the individual:

(a) Uses his or her athletics skill (directly or indirectly) for pay in any form in that sport;

(b) Accepts a promise of pay even if such pay is to be received following completion of intercollegiate athletics participation

(d) Receives, directly or indirectly, a salary, reimbursement of expenses or any other form of financial assistance from a professional sports organization based on athletics skill or participation, except as permitted by NCAA rules and regulations;

The Amateur Status section states that if the student-athlete accepts payment or the promise of payment he/she will lose that status (to compete in NCAA). Nowhere did it say the solicitation of such benefit by any party will render the student-athlete ineligible. This means that Cam Newton would lose eligibility if he accepted payment or promise of payment—not if sought else asking on his behalf sought payment.

12.3 USE OF AGENTS

12.3.1 General Rule.

An individual shall be ineligible for participation in an intercollegiate sport if he or she ever has agreed (orally or in writing) to be represented by an agent for the purpose of marketing his or her athletics ability or reputation in that sport. Further, an agency contract not specifically limited in writing to a sport or particular sports shall be deemed applicable to all sports, and the individual shall be ineligible to participate in any sport.

It’s against the rules to have an agent shopping you around, but a person cannot be your agent if you never agree to be represented by him/her. This means Kenny Rogers is not Cam Newton’s agent, since Cam, as far as we know, never agreed to be represented by Kenny Rogers.

12.3.1.2          Benefits from Prospective Agents.

An individual shall be ineligible per Bylaw 12.3.1 if he or she (or his or her relatives or friends) accepts transportation or other benefits from: (Revised: 1/14/97)

(a) Any person who represents any individual in the marketing of his or her athletics ability. The receipt of such expenses constitutes compensation based on athletics skill and is an extra benefit not available to the student body in general; or

(b) An agent, even if the agent has indicated that he or she has no interest in representing the student-athlete in the marketing of his or her athletics ability or reputation and does not represent individuals in the student-athlete’s sport. (Adopted: 1/14/97)

It is against the rules for ANYONE related to the student-athlete to accept benefits from agents or possible agents. This means as long as Cecil never took a penny from Kenny Rogers, Cam is eligible.

13.01.1           Eligibility Effects of Recruiting Violation.

The recruitment of a student-athlete by a member institution or any representative of its athletics interests in violation of the Association’s legislation, as acknowledged by the institution or established through the Association’s enforcement procedures, shall result in the student-athlete becoming ineligible to represent that institution in intercollegiate athletics. The Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement may restore the eligibility of a student involved in such a violation only when circumstances clearly warrant restoration. A student is responsible for his or her involvement in a violation of NCAA regulations during the student’s recruitment, and involvement in a major violation (see Bylaw 19.02.2.2) may cause the student to become permanently ineligible for intercollegiate athletics competition at that institution.

If a student-athlete’s recruitment violated NCAA regulations, he/she would become ineligible to compete at that institution. However, nowhere does it say he/she will become ineligible at another institution where the recruitment followed the rules. This means, even if Cam Newton somehow violated the rules during the MSU recruitment, it has zero bearing on his eligibility at AU.

13.01.3           Off-Campus Recruiting.

In-person, off-campus recruiting is limited to authorized athletics department staff members, and limitations may be placed on the number of staff members who are permitted to

recruit off campus (see Bylaws 13.1.2.3 and 13.1.2.5).

13.01.4           Recruiting by Representatives of Athletics Interests.

Representatives of an institution’s athletics interests (as defined in Bylaw 13.02.13) are prohibited from making in-person, on- or off-campus recruiting contacts, or written or telephonic communications with a prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete’s relatives or legal guardians. Specific examples of exceptions to the application of this regulation are set forth in Bylaw 13.1.2.2 (see Bylaw 13.1.3.5.1.1).

13.02.13         Representative of Athletics Interests. A “representative of the institution’s athletics interests”

is an individual, independent agency, corporate entity (e.g., apparel or equipment manufacturer) or other organization who is known (or who should have been known) by a member of the institution’s executive or athletics administration to: (Revised: 2/16/00)

(b) Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or to an athletics booster organization of that institution;

(d) Be assisting or to have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families; or

13.1.3.5   Nonpermissible Callers.

13.1.3.5.1 Representatives of Athletics Interests.

Representatives of an institution’s athletics interests (as defined in Bylaw 13.02.13) are prohibited from making telephonic communications with a prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete’s relatives or legal guardians.

13.1.3.5.1.1 Prospective Student-Athlete Initiates Call. An athletics representative of a member institution may speak to a prospective student-athlete via the telephone only if the prospective student-athlete initiates the telephone conversation and the call is not for recruiting purposes. Under such circumstances, the representative must refer questions about the institution’s athletics program to the athletics department staff.

These sections deal with boosters, and coupled with the fact that Kenny Rogers is NOT Cam Newton’s agent, would yield some rather unexpected results.

1. If Kenny Rogers ever donated to MSU’s athletics department (which, he could very well have, since he is an MSU alum), he is considered a booster for MSU.

2. Boosters cannot and should not be involved in the recruitment process in any way. The mere fact that Kenny Rogers was involved in all this is a violation by itself for MSU. Along with John Bond and Bill Bell, if any of them tried to arrange anything or even talk to Cam and/or Cecil, it’s a violation by MSU.

3. You are not supposed to make or even take calls from the student athlete and/or their relatives. If Bill Bell had any direct contact with Cecil Newton, that is a violation by MSU.

16.01.1 Eligibility Effect of Violation.

A student-athlete shall not receive any extra benefit. Receipt by a student-athlete of an award, benefit or expense allowance not authorized by NCAA legislation renders the student-athlete ineligible for athletics competition in the sport for which the improper award, benefit or expense was received. If the student-athlete receives an extra benefit not authorized by NCAA legislation, the individual is ineligible in all sports.

16.02.3 Extra Benefit.

An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of a benefit by student-athletes or their relatives or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to the institution’s students or their relatives or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g., international students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability. (Revised: 1/10/91)

Again, everything deals with the fact that the actual benefit is provided or agreed upon, not the solicitation of such benefit. It means, as I mentioned before, that as long as no agreement was made and no benefit was received, there would be no violation on Cam’s part.

So, if we do follow the letter of the law, you can clearly see that NCAA has zero standing to rule Cam ineligible or sanction Auburn in any way. On the other hand, all the reports and accounts from various sources will bring trouble only to MSU. As long as Cam and Cecil didn’t agree or receive any “extra benefits,” he is, as said all along by Auburn officials, eligible to play for Auburn—period.the reports and accounts from various sources will bring trouble only to MSU. As long as Cam and Cecil didn’t agree or receive any “extra benefits,” he is, as said all along by Auburn officials, eligible to play for Auburn—period.

Sources: the End is Near For Cam Fig Newton

Sources close to OffshoreInsiders.com are assuring us that the hammer will come down hard on Cam Newton and Auburn. Furthermore, we are ready to state it will happen likely sooner than later.

Though there was little doubt that Cam “Fig” Newton would get whacked, there was some hope at AU that Cecil Newton would get amnesia and the Tiger program would be spared serious punishment, claiming they were caught in the crossfire.

Our source went so far as to promise that Auburn will get as severe of a punishment ever handed out by the NCAA, “other than SMU.”

All records will be expunged from the record books.

OffshoreInsiders.com reported the Wade Phillips firing hours before the lamestream media and also reported that there was plenty of fire behind the Cam Newton smoke when the lamestream media was proceeding with caution.

“The facts are he stole a laptop (or bought a stolen laptop), cheated on his exams at Florida. He’s no boy scout,” said our source.

However, knowing little bloodshed cannot be stopped by keeping Newton out of the Iron Bowl or SEC Championship, it’s not likely that Auburn will keep him out. They are forcing the NCAA hand.

“Look for it to effect the (Iron Bowl and or SEC Championship game) odds by 4-6 points,” said Brian Kayma of Lines-Maker.com.
