The biggest move is the Padres sending Jake Peavy to the White Sox for four pitchers Aaron Poreda, Clayton Richard, Dexter Carter, and Adam Russell.

The Boston Red Sox got All-Star catcher Victor Martinez for young pitchers Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone, and Bryan Price. The Tribe starting emptying the talent when they traded ace Cliff Lee to Philadelphia.

Detroit got pitcher Jarrod Washburn for young pitchers Luke French and Mauricia Robles. Minnesota got Orlando Cabrera from the Oakland A’s for minor league SS Tyler Ladendorf.

MLB Betting – Saturday Baseball Picks

NFL betting is the last thing on St. Louis fans’ minds—wouldn’t you block out the memory of the Rams if you were them? — but they have a good baseball team to watch right now. Their Cardinals host the resurgent Houston Astros in a crucial NL Central matchup this weekend. Who will win Saturday’s game—not to mention the pitcher’s duel between Philly and San Fran?

Houston Astros @ St. Louis Cardinals
Saturday, August 1, 7:10 p.m. ET
Wandy Rodriguez (10-6, 2.65) vs Chris Carpenter (9-3, 2.19)

Saturday’s Astros/Cardinals tilt gives you an opportunity to make a highly “educated guess,” as it features two veteran starters who have faced the opposing team—a divisional rival—many times. Wandy Rodriguez has been a machine since the All-Star break and, really, all season long. However, while he was 4-0 with a 0.75 ERA July, he now enters his worst career month (6-9, 5.37 in August). He should hang tough against the Cardinals regardless, as he has a 3.38 ERA at Busch Stadium. He faces world-beater Chris Carpenter, who’s 5-1 with a 1.76 ERA at home this season. Carpenter is also 5-3 with four complete games and two shutouts all-time against the Astros, so you should probably bet on the Cards.

Daily sports pick: Cardinals

Philadelphia Phillies @ San Francisco Giants
Saturday, August 1, 9:05 p.m. ET
Joe Blanton (7-4, 4.11) vs Tim Lincecum (11-3, 2.30)

Joe Blanton is portly – not quite in the realm of Charlie Weis in college football betting, but close—yet he’s getting it done on the mound lately. He’s still serving up homers like crazy but went 3-0 with a 1.21 ERA in July. He’ll have to pitch around new Giant Ryan Garko, who has three homers and a 1.509 OPS in just 14 at bats against him, but he’s pitching well enough that he should keep the Frisco bats in check.

Cy Young candidate Tim Lincecum takes the hill for the Gaints, fresh off his 15-strikeout performance against Pittsburgh. In theory, it’s bad betting management to go against Lincecum, but there’s upset value here. Lincecum’s career ERA against the Phillies is north of 4.00 and he’s allowed a handful of homers against them—something he doesn’t do very often. Ryan Howard may get to him, as he’s already taken him deep twice in nine at-bats. Lincecum is obviously an amazing pitcher, but even the best have the odd speed bump, and no team is better equipped to get to him than the Phillies.

Daily sports pick: Phillies

Buick Open Odds, Luke French-Jarrod Washburn Trade Headline Sports

Tiger Woods remains the favorite in the revised odds to win the 2009 Buick Open. However, in danger to miss the cut in his first tournament since his Turnberry disaster, Woods is a not-so-prohibitive 7-2.  Jim Furyk and John Senden are next.

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Sox begin a series at Camden Yards, the Braves get a visit from the Dodgers, and the CFL continues Week 5.

Sports headlines…

The Seattle Mariners have traded left-handed hurler Jarrod Washburn to the Detroit Tigers for two young pitchers led by Luke French…Michael Vick said he is closer to signing with a new team though refused to elaborate. Stevie Vincent, the founder of forensic sports handicapping says it’s not the New England Patriots or Washington Redskins, or Kansas City Chiefs as most speculate, but it will be the Seattle Seahawks said the guru quoting “reliable sources.”

UFC Odds…

The Offshore Insiders Network is continuing gavel to gavel betting coverage of the UFC 101 fight lines with previews and more in the free pick section.  BJ Penn is currently 230 over Kenny Florian and Anderson Silva -350 over Forrest Griffin.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit  . . .

John Smoltz (1-4, 7.04 ERA) will be trying to hold onto a spot in the Red Sox rotation on Friday night when his team begins a series in Baltimore. Righthander Smoltz has been tagged with the loss in each of his last two outings, and he was beaten by the Orioles in his last trip to the mound (six earned runs over five innings). Baltimore will counter with righthander Jeremy Guthrie (7-9, 5.21 ERA), who is coming off a loss to Boston on July 25 (five earned runs in 6 2-3 innings).

Also on the American League schedule for Friday: Detroit at Cleveland, Kansas City at Tampa Bay, Seattle at Texas, the Yankees at the White Sox, Toronto at Oakland, and the Angels at Minnesota. Ervin Santana (3-6. 7.29 ERA) is slated to start for L.A.; righthander Santana gave up six runs over 3 2-3 innings against the Twins last time out. Nick Blackburn (8-5, 3.75 ERA) gets the ball for Minnesota; he was rocked by the Angels last time out (six runs in 3 2-3 innings).

Tommy Hanson (5-1, 2.95 ERA) will be on the hill for the Braves on Friday night as they host the Dodgers and Jason Schmidt (1-1, 7.88 ERA). Righthander Hanson took a hard-luck loss against the Brewers last time out, allowing just two earned runs over his seven innings of work. Righthander Schmidt lasted just three innings against the Marlins in his most recent outing, giving up five runs (four earned). Schmidt had beaten the Reds in his 2009 season debut on July 20.

Making up the rest of the NL slate for Friday: Washington at Pittsburgh, the Cubs at Florida, Arizona at the Mets, Colorado at Cincinnati, Houston at St. Louis, Milwaukee at San Diego, and Philadelphia at San Francisco. Cliff Lee (7-9, 3.14 ERA) will make his Phillies debut in that contest. Lefthander Lee has won each of his last three starts, allowing four runs in 25 innings. The Giants will turn to Ryan Sadowski (2-3, 4.81 ERA), who has taken a loss in each of his last three outings.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

There is one game on the Canadian Football League schedule for Friday, with British Columbia at Hamilton. The Tigers-Cats upset the Lions back in Week 2, pulling out a 31-28 road victory as a 13-point underdog. Heading into the Week 5 matchup Hamilton is 2-2 straight-up and 3-1 against-the-spread, while B.C. has disappointed at 1-3 SU and 1-3 ATS. For Friday night’s contest the oddsmakers have the Lions listed as 2-point road favorites, with the total for the game at 50.5.

Finally, there is a single WNBA game on tap for Friday, as Detroit hosts Minnesota. The Shock last played on July 22, when they were edged 98-95 by Atlanta; that put Detroit at 5-9 SU and 5-9 ATS on the season. The Lynx fell 76-70 to Los Angeles in their last contest, which dropped them to 10-8 both SU and ATS on the season. Roneeka Hodges tossed in 14 points for the Lynx in that loss.
