NBA

Raptors-Heat

Sun Sentinel

The Heat is riding a season-high five-game winning streak
as it fattens up on weak opponents. Coach Pat Riley is looking for more
defensive effort.  It took the Raptors 10
games to get their first victory, and it came against the Heat. Toronto
lost five in a row after that win but has played decently since then, posting a
19-20 record.

Sixers-Mavericks

Phillyburbs.com

The Sixers begin their very own Texas
two-step tonight. They visit the Dallas Mavericks tonight and then face the
Houston Rockets on Wednesday night. The Mavericks (44-11) own the best record
in the Western Conference. They are 25-4 at home, having overcome a 24-point
third-quarter deficit to edge the Toronto Raptors in overtime Saturday to
extend their American Airline
Center
winning streak to 14 games. Dallas
hasn’t lost at home since Dec. 30. The Sixers are likely to have Chris Webber,
who sat out Saturday night’s 108-102 win over the Bulls with the flu, back
tonight. Samuel Dalembert, who missed the last two
games with a sprained left ankle, didn’t travel with the team to Dallas
on Sunday and isn’t expected to play until Wednesday, at the earliest.

CBB

Pittsburgh-West Virginia

Post Gazette

Third place or sixth place. That,
in a nutshell, is what the game against West Virginia
means for Pitt. If the Panthers win, they will clinch third place in the Big
East Conference and a bye in the conference tournament next week at Madison
Square Garden

in New York, provided they beat
Seton Hall Friday at the Petersen Events
Center
in the regular-season finale.  They defeated West
Virginia
, 57-53, Feb. 9 at the Petersen
Events Center
.
Pitt has scored 80 points or more in each of its past four games. If there is
one thing missing from Pitt’s NCAA resume this season, it’s a signature road
win. The Panthers are 3-4 away from home in Big East play. Pitt is winless
against top echelon teams on the road this season. The Panthers’ most
impressive road win? How about South
Carolina
?

Boise-Fresno

Idaho Statesmen

It’s the first appearance on Big Monday for the Broncos,
who are 5-5 in 10 previous games televised by ESPN networks.

Northern Arizona-Montana

Great Falls Tribune

Coach Larry Krystkowiak’s
Grizzlies have already clinched second place in the Big Sky and an accompanying
bye into the league tournament semifinals, slated for March 7 in Flagstaff,
Ariz.
Tonight’s game offers one more chance
for Grizzly seniors Kevin Criswell and Virgil Matthews to hear the cheers of
the home folks. Northern Arizona (12-1, 20-8) has taken
the Big Sky by storm this season. The Lumberjacks of coach
Mike Adras were picked to be a middle-of-the-pack
team but have prospered behind senior shootists Kelly
Golob and Steve Sir. Forward Ruben Boykin Jr., off-guard
Tyrone Bazy and freshman point guard Josh Wilson have
also had outstanding years for the Jacks. Northern
Arizona
rallied from a 19-point
deficit to defeat
Montana 83-80 in Flagstaff on Jan. 19.

Cal State
Sacramento-Montana State

Great Falls Tribune

Tonight in Bozeman,
the Montana State Bobcats will also celebrate Senior Night as the Sacramento
State Hornets visit Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. A
Bobcat victory, though, means coach Mick Durham’s club will earn another home
game Saturday afternoon as the league tournament gets under way. Montana
State
(6-7, 14-14) will earn fourth
place with a victory tonight. The Bobcats, though, are reeling — both
physically and emotionally. Durham’s
club has dropped five straight conference games and was blown out twice on the
road last week while playing without leading scorer Ja’Ron
Jefferson (the flu) and an ineffective Marvin Moss, who was also a bit under
the weather. Jefferson, Moss, center Al Beye and reserve Taylor Pratt are MSU’s
seniors. Sacramento State
(5-8, 14-13) is also struggling, having lost four in a row, including a 92-72
drubbing by Northern Arizona on Saturday. The Cats are
11-3 at Brick Breeden this year.

NBA

HOUSTON +2 Phoenix

In my many meetings of the mind with fellow serious
handicappers we discuss and debate how recent versus overall performance is
properly weighted.  There is both the
generic discussion or as Houston
proves sometimes it’s a case by case basis.

The Rockets have had more than their share of injuries,
but now that they are healthy it’s no shock they’ve been playing their best
hoops of the year.  They are 10-2 SU
their last 12.

Heading the list of reasons Houston
is playing better hoops is Yao Ming. Yao is averaging 21.3 points and
10.8 rebounds over the last 12 games, including eight double-doubles.

Houston’s recent
play is much more indicative of the quality of talent they have.  Tonight’s spread is not.

CBB

Here are news and notes from Godspicks.com private
clipboard.  They are compiled from
hometown newspapers and the team’s own press releases.

Villanova-Connecticut

Press Notes

VU has now won 18 of its last 19 in regular season
conference action dating back to 2004-05. Villanova improved to 9-1 (.900) on
the road with its win at Cincinnati.
The Wildcats are 14-4 as the visitor over the past two seasons. In the two
years prior to that, VU was 9-16 (.360) on the road.

Michigan State-Indiana

Press Notes

The last two Michigan State-Indiana games in Bloomington
have gone into overtime. IU won 78-74 last season,
while MSU was a 67-62 victor on Feb. 8, 2003. In fact, three of the last five
meetings in Assembly Hall have gone extra time as the Hoosiers won a 81-79 overtime contest on Feb. 11, 2000. One year later, Indiana
defeated No. 1 Michigan State, 59-58, on a last second 3-pointer. Indiana
leads the all-time series with Michigan State, 61-41, including a 39-10
advantage in games played in Bloomington.
MSU has won 10 of the last 15 games in the series.

California-Washington

Press Notes

won their Thursday games. The Huskies defeated Stanford 75-57 and the Golden
Bears were 43-41 victors at Washington
State
. Five seniors make their
final home appearance Sunday for the Huskies. They have helped the Huskies to a
50-12 four-year record at Bank of America Arena, including a 32-game winning
streak that was the nation’s longest.  Washington
won three of the last four meetings to claim a 71-70 edge in the all-time
series.

INDIANA +1’ Michigan
State

Whiny Mike Davis, the lame duck Indiana
coach is right about one thing. His Indiana
team is still in contention.  It’s not so
much this year, but the cumulative of Davis
second year on that forced him to resign.
But they are 6-1 SU at home in the conference and getting points from a
team that is 2-5 SU in the conference with one of the wins in OT.

The home team is a combined 23-4 SU in the two teams conference games. Davis
may not be liked by the boosters, but we look for the players to respond and
expect the fans to handle themselves with class in Davis
last home game and send him out a winner.

Michigan State’s
offense has seemed worn down in its last three losses, particularly its 3-point
shooting. In defeats to Minnesota,
Iowa and Ohio
State
, the Spartans shot a woeful
11-of-47 (23 percent) from beyond the arc. The team averaged 59 points in those
three games, well below their season average of 76.4.

GEORGE MASON -24 James Madison

True there is plenty of leeway for Mason to win but not
cover.  However Mason is 8-0 SU in the
conference at home with most huge blowouts, Jimmy is 1-7 on the road in the
conference but with blowout city after blowout city.  In conference location comparison (home
team’s home stats, road team’s road stats) Mason has humungous advantages on
both ends of the court in shooting percentage.

Defensively they allow 12.2 percent less and hit 8.8
more.  These are huge edges.  All signs point towards a 30 point rout.
