Wednesday Godspicks

We are so happy to welcome Olympic Sports Book, one of the biggest and most respected sportsbooks on the planet to our list of endorsed books. What I personally love about them is they are among the earliest to release lines. For those who like to “middle” games “Bet Middler” as we like to say, this is a must sportsbook. But they also have some of the sharpest lines on the planet and are imperative to any and all line shopping. Click here to sign up now. Welcome Greek to the JoeDuffy.net family of endorsed books

March is here! We

tonight—two in college and
one in the NBA.  The midnight oil has started burning and won’t stop until after

researching in the wee hours of the morn.

NBA

DENVER +5 Detroit

Detroit is a
veteran team heading to the thin air of Denver
playing their third game in four nights with a road heavy schedule ahead of
them including two more on this trip. True Detroit
is sizzling but thanks to Denver
being in a much better conference, Foxsheets has Denver’s
strength of schedule much tougher.

The Massey Comparison Ratings, which include Sagarin and
arguably better though lesser known computer rankings among 15 that form a
consensus has Denver with the fourth toughest schedule to date with Detroit at
No. 27.

The bomb and fouling does scare us and made us back off a
premium play.  However we look for the
game to be decided very late and it makes the points jump out.

Wyoming-San Diego
State

Press Notes

San Diego State (19-8; 12-3 Mountain West Conference), winners of 11 of its last 13, 13 of its last 16
and 15 of its last 19 games, looks to clinch the 2006 MWC
championship outright.
The Aztecs clinched at least a share of the
conference crown with its 73-66 victory over New Mexico
at The Pit. The victory also allowed SDSU to improve
to 7-5 in road/neutral games and 6-2 on the road in the MWC.
Wyoming has lost four straight
with its last win coming against TCU back on Feb. 8.
The four-game losing streak is a bit deceiving as the Cowboys’ four defeats
have come by a combined 11 points at Air Force, at New
Mexico
, vs. Brigham Young and vs. Colorado
State
.

Duquesne-Charlotte

Press Notes

Duquesne (3-22, 1-13), coming off a 77-76 home loss to St.
Bonaventure on Saturday, completes the road portion of the 2005-06 schedule at Charlotte
(17-10, 10-4). The Dukes, who are looking to end a seven-game losing streak,
are 1-10 on the road. This is DU’s first game at Charlotte
since December of 1993. Charlotte, the only team in the A-10 with a better
record on the road (9-3) than at home (7-6) is coming off a 77-74 Halton Arena loss to Saint Louis on Saturday.

St. John’s-Villanova

Press Notes

Villanova Men’s Basketball Game Notes for Wednesday night’s
game between No. 4/4 Villanova (22-3, 12-2 Big East) and St. John’s (12-13, 5-9
Big East). The teams will be playing on Senior Night at the Pavilion, where
Villanova will honor its five graduating seniors along with two student
assistants.

Maryland-Miami

Press Notes

Miami (15-12,
7-7 ACC) enters the contest having lost four of its last five games, but did
defeat Virginia Tech, 70-59, in its last game on Feb. 22.

Utah-TCU

Press Notes

Utah leads
the all-time series 7-1. In their last meeting, Utah
took an 80-45 win over TCU in Salt
Lake City
on Jan.
28, 2006
.

Georgia-Florida

Press Notes

Georgia
begins the homestretch of its regular season with a mid-week contest at Florida
Almost two months have passed since these two teams first met in Athens,
where Florida took a 90-72
victory. The Bulldogs arrive at this game with a 15-12 record, 5-9 in SEC
games.  Their overall mark represents a 7-game improvement from last
season, their SEC record an advancement of 3 games
from 2005.  Most recently, however, Georgia
dropped an 83-68 decision at Miss. State,
a game in which the visiting Bulldogs led at halftime. Florida
gained this advantage in the series by winning the past four meetings, going
back to the second matchup of the 2004 season. In the past 10 years, Georgia
has had virtually as much success in Gainesville
as any other SEC venue.  Over that span, Bulldog teams have posted four
wins, second only to the five recorded at Vanderbilt.

Virginia-North Carolina

Press Notes

North Carolina
understandably struggled at times in the season after losing all of its stars
from last year’s run to the national title. The young Tar Heels, though, are
playing their best basketball of 2005-06 at the right time, and can clinch the
second seed in the ACC tournament when they face Virginia
on Wednesday. The No. 13 Tar Heels (19-6, 10-4) go for their sixth straight win
and look to exact some revenge against the Cavaliers (14-11, 7-7) as the teams
meet at the Smith Center.
North Carolina’s only loss in its
last nine games was a hard-fought 87-83 home defeat to then-No. 2 Duke on Feb.
7. With players like freshman Tyler Hansbrough and
junior Reyshawn Terry starting to assert themselves,
the Heels can lock up the No. 2 seed in the conference tourney with a victory
Wednesday. Virginia has been
inconsistent of late, losing two of its last three games to fall into a
fifth-place tie in the ACC with Florida
State
and Miami.
The Cavaliers followed one of their most impressive wins of the season, a 72-58
victory over then-No. 11 Boston College
last Tuesday, with one of their worst efforts in a 90-64 loss to Clemson on
Saturday.

Virginia
shot 43.8 percent from the field and committed a season-high 29 turnovers
against the Tigers, including 16 in the first half.

CLEVELAND STATE
+8 Detroit Mercy

True the chalks finished the season stronger, but
tournament time is a chance to get a new outlook and mentally regroup. These
teams are more evenly matched than the recent runs suggest and eight points is
way too much even if the chalk wins outright.

UDM was in a five way tie for
fifth seed but got in on a tie-breaker, so they are not even as good as their
mediocre seed suggests.

Mercy advances but won’t have a cover to show for it.

NBA

Timberwolves-Bulls

Chicago Sun Times

The Bulls look to snap a two-game losing streak when they
host the T-wolves, who won the last meeting 99-93 on Jan. 11 in Minneapolis.
Since then, Minnesota has gotten
quicker with the trade of Wally Szczerbiak to Boston
for Ricky Davis and Marcus Banks. Forward Malik Allen
likely will get his second start for the Bulls.

Hornets-Sonics

Seattle Times

The Sonics return to KeyArena
after playing their past six games on the road, finishing 1-5.  The Hornets are 2-0 to start their current
four-game trip. They defeated Portland
88-75 on Sunday and have won 11 of their past 14.  The Hornets, who beat the Sonics 105-99 at KeyArena in November and 109-102 in Oklahoma
City
earlier this month, haven’t defeated the Sonics
in a season series since 2002-03.

CBB

Wake Forest-Boston
College

Jackson Daily News

A loss would guarantee that Wake
Forest
is the No. 12 seed in the
12-team ACC Tournament next week, though numerous other combinations during the
final week of the regular season will give the Demon Deacons the same seed. Wake
Forest
, making its first basketball
appearance in the greater Boston
area, needs to win tonight to avoid its first winless ACC road schedule since
the 1987-88 season. y winning
tonight, Boston College
can clinch a first-round bye for its first appearance in the ACC Tournament,
and the Eagles are still in contention for the No. 2 seed.

Illinois-Minnesota

Decatur Herald & Review

Coach Dan Monson believes the Golden Gophers are finally
playing their best basketball of the season. The NCAA Tournament is surely out
of the question, unless, of course, Minnesota
can win the Big Ten Tournament and the automatic NCAA Tournament berth that
comes with it. If not that, the NIT might come
calling. Plus tonight is “Senior Night” for starters Vince Grier, Adam Boom and
J’son Stamper. “We need to keep grinding,” Monson
said. “We’re playing against teams that beat us the first time around so we’re
trying to show we’ve improved. I think we have a little bit of an identity we
didn’t have earlier in the season.”Illinois beat Minnesota
77-53 on Jan. 25th. The Gophers have endured injuries and lineup
shuffles and Monson has finally settled on a starting group that includes walkons Zach Puchtel and Jamal
Abu-Shamala.

Tennessee Martin-Murray
State

Press Notes

The two just wrapped up the regular season Saturday in Murray,
where the Racers won 81-63 and finished the regular season 21-6 and 17-3
winning the OVC regular-season championship.This
is the 31st all-time meeting between the two teams. MSU leads 28-2 and has won 10 straight. The Racers have

NBA

Raptors-Heat

Sun Sentinel

The Heat is riding a season-high five-game winning streak
as it fattens up on weak opponents. Coach Pat Riley is looking for more
defensive effort.  It took the Raptors 10
games to get their first victory, and it came against the Heat. Toronto
lost five in a row after that win but has played decently since then, posting a
19-20 record.

Sixers-Mavericks

Phillyburbs.com

The Sixers begin their very own Texas
two-step tonight. They visit the Dallas Mavericks tonight and then face the
Houston Rockets on Wednesday night. The Mavericks (44-11) own the best record
in the Western Conference. They are 25-4 at home, having overcome a 24-point
third-quarter deficit to edge the Toronto Raptors in overtime Saturday to
extend their American Airline
Center
winning streak to 14 games. Dallas
hasn’t lost at home since Dec. 30. The Sixers are likely to have Chris Webber,
who sat out Saturday night’s 108-102 win over the Bulls with the flu, back
tonight. Samuel Dalembert, who missed the last two
games with a sprained left ankle, didn’t travel with the team to Dallas
on Sunday and isn’t expected to play until Wednesday, at the earliest.

CBB

Pittsburgh-West Virginia

Post Gazette

Third place or sixth place. That,
in a nutshell, is what the game against West Virginia
means for Pitt. If the Panthers win, they will clinch third place in the Big
East Conference and a bye in the conference tournament next week at Madison
Square Garden

in New York, provided they beat
Seton Hall Friday at the Petersen Events
Center
in the regular-season finale.  They defeated West
Virginia
, 57-53, Feb. 9 at the Petersen
Events Center
.
Pitt has scored 80 points or more in each of its past four games. If there is
one thing missing from Pitt’s NCAA resume this season, it’s a signature road
win. The Panthers are 3-4 away from home in Big East play. Pitt is winless
against top echelon teams on the road this season. The Panthers’ most
impressive road win? How about South
Carolina
?

Boise-Fresno

Idaho Statesmen

It’s the first appearance on Big Monday for the Broncos,
who are 5-5 in 10 previous games televised by ESPN networks.

Northern Arizona-Montana

Great Falls Tribune

Coach Larry Krystkowiak’s
Grizzlies have already clinched second place in the Big Sky and an accompanying
bye into the league tournament semifinals, slated for March 7 in Flagstaff,
Ariz.
Tonight’s game offers one more chance
for Grizzly seniors Kevin Criswell and Virgil Matthews to hear the cheers of
the home folks. Northern Arizona (12-1, 20-8) has taken
the Big Sky by storm this season. The Lumberjacks of coach
Mike Adras were picked to be a middle-of-the-pack
team but have prospered behind senior shootists Kelly
Golob and Steve Sir. Forward Ruben Boykin Jr., off-guard
Tyrone Bazy and freshman point guard Josh Wilson have
also had outstanding years for the Jacks. Northern
Arizona
rallied from a 19-point
deficit to defeat
Montana 83-80 in Flagstaff on Jan. 19.

Cal State
Sacramento-Montana State

Great Falls Tribune

Tonight in Bozeman,
the Montana State Bobcats will also celebrate Senior Night as the Sacramento
State Hornets visit Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. A
Bobcat victory, though, means coach Mick Durham’s club will earn another home
game Saturday afternoon as the league tournament gets under way. Montana
State
(6-7, 14-14) will earn fourth
place with a victory tonight. The Bobcats, though, are reeling — both
physically and emotionally. Durham’s
club has dropped five straight conference games and was blown out twice on the
road last week while playing without leading scorer Ja’Ron
Jefferson (the flu) and an ineffective Marvin Moss, who was also a bit under
the weather. Jefferson, Moss, center Al Beye and reserve Taylor Pratt are MSU’s
seniors. Sacramento State
(5-8, 14-13) is also struggling, having lost four in a row, including a 92-72
drubbing by Northern Arizona on Saturday. The Cats are
11-3 at Brick Breeden this year.

NBA

HOUSTON +2 Phoenix

In my many meetings of the mind with fellow serious
handicappers we discuss and debate how recent versus overall performance is
properly weighted.  There is both the
generic discussion or as Houston
proves sometimes it’s a case by case basis.

The Rockets have had more than their share of injuries,
but now that they are healthy it’s no shock they’ve been playing their best
hoops of the year.  They are 10-2 SU
their last 12.

Heading the list of reasons Houston
is playing better hoops is Yao Ming. Yao is averaging 21.3 points and
10.8 rebounds over the last 12 games, including eight double-doubles.

Houston’s recent
play is much more indicative of the quality of talent they have.  Tonight’s spread is not.
