NFL Picks: Dallas Cowboys 2010 Super Bowl Champs

The Dallas Cowboys will win the 2010 Super Bowl. Whichever sportsbook football bettors place their bet with will pay a nice recompense. The Cowboys are +1500 to win Super Bowl XLIV according to BetUs.

We do have to give our disclaimer. NFL handicapping is much like coaching. Week to week adjustments are mandatory for successful football betting. Hence, we only wager “lunch money” as to not even subconsciously bias our in-season handicapping by being married to season long futures bets.

Still the Pokes are looking ripe at 15-1.  Why? As any of our long-time clients know, and we have documented many times, football is ultimately won by players who touch the pigskin. However great offenses are not judged by fantasy football stats such as points scored or total yards, but by how well they put the defense where defenses perform the best: on the sidelines.

The 2009-10 Dallas Cowboys may not be the Second Coming of Csonka, Kiick, and Morris, but the triumphant of Marion Barber, Tashard Choice, and Felix Jones has the makings of turning any defense into the No Name Defense II.

Furthermore, Jason Witten is the best tight end in the game, perfect for chain-moving, ball control. A better-than-average offensive line will protect the much maligned, but still upper echelon QB Tony Romo.

Dispensing of Terrell Owens is addition by subtraction. Reading defenses and having a thick enough skin to deal with fan and media criticism is imperative to being an elite quarterback.

But having to deal with a diva teammate who is ready to throw one under the bus at a moments notice is an encumbrance that Romo will no longer deal with.

A talented defense will be among the statistical leaders because they will be greatly aided by a meticulous clock-consuming offense.

No it won’t be a perfect season but the Dallas Cowboys will win the 2010 Super Bowl using the same model as the 1972 Miami Dolphins.

Baseball Betting: Big Papi David Ortiz on Roid List

Well it wasn’t trips to the Quick Weight Loss Center after all. David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez are the latest names to surface on the 2003 steriods list. Big Papi has seen his numbers plummet this year, hence the Red Sox are now shopping for offensive talent.

QWL may be to credit for the Rush Limbaugh diet as he has dropped 58 pounds. In football betting news, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo has a new girlfriend and it’s Natalie Smith, a 22-year-old Jessica Simpson look-alike.

Perhaps Kim Kardashian, fresh off her breakup with Reggie Bush, will be Romo’s next babe.

Now to the Yankees-White Sox.

Following an awful road trip, the Chicago White Sox hope returning home can help them get back on track.

It won’t be easy with consecutive series against the two best teams in the league, beginning tonight with a four-game set against the AL East-leading New York Yankees.

New York arrives in town after defeating Tampa Bay 6-2 on Thursday to move a season-best 3 ½ games up on second-place Boston.

In the series opener, Andy Pettitte seeks his first victory in nearly a month.

Pettitte is 0-6 with an 8.55 ERA in seven starts in Chicago since 1996.

Unlike Pettitte, Gavin Floyd has been at his best on Chicago’s South Side. Floyd is 4-0 with a 2.03 ERA in his last seven home starts with the Sox winning each time.

This will be Floyd’s first start of the season against the Yankees.

After a dramatic extra-inning victory, Albert Pujols and the -110 favored St. Louis Cardinals look to make a statement by sweeping a four-game series over the Los Angeles Dodgers in today’s finale.

With two outs and two on in the 15th inning of a tie game Wednesday, Pujols lined an RBI single to center, giving St. Louis a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers, who are in the midst of a season-high four-game skid.

The Cardinals improved to 11-2 against the Dodgers at four-year-old Busch Stadium.

While everything has been going the Cardinals’ way in this series, they haven’t had much luck with scheduled starter Kyle Lohse on the mound lately.

Lohse is just 1-6 with a 5.44 ERA in his last nine starts, with the Cardinals winning just once in that span.

L.A. counters with Hiroki Kuroda, who looks to build on his first quality start in a month.

UFC 101 Betting – Silva vs Griffin

If Community Shield betting ain’t your thing, you’re probably a fight fan. Why not bet on one or both of the main events at UFC 101? Let’s handicap the Silva/Griffin bout.

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT

Anderson “The Spider” Silva
Record: 24-4
Notable victories: Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin, Nate Marquardt
Odds to win: -330

BOOM: He’s right up there with the best pound-for-pound fighters on planet Earth, as he can do it all in the Octagon. His striking is amazingly fast, accurate and powerful. He can crush people with his knees in the Muay Thai clinch, he can bust out head kicks or spinning backfists, and his elbows are great too. On the ground, he controls opponents with his lanky limbs and can submit opponents. He’s a fantastic evader of punches, bobbing and weaving like Muhammad Ali.

BUST: Unless you want to say he’s susceptible to submission because of that one flying heel hook from Ryo Chonan, there’s not much to dislike about Silva. I suppose you can say his dedication is in question after he seemed disinterested in his last two wins, but that’s it.

Forrest Griffin
Record: 16-5
Notable victories: Rampage Jackson, Shogun Rua
Odds to win: +255

BOOM: Few fighters can match Forrest Griffin’s heart and chin. He’s a self-proclaimed “dog,” willing fo fight anyone and never giving up. He’s fast for his size and can really slow opponents down with his accurate leg kicks. He’s decent on the ground, as his Jiu-Jitsu keeps improving—and that’s a product of his smarts and eagerness to learn.

BUST: Forrest has no power. Just two of his 16 wins came via knockout and, since he’s inferior to Silva on the ground, I’m betting he won’t finish Silva. He also leaves himself open to big shots because of his brawling style, so Silva may seriously hurt him in the clinch.

Pick: Griffin will do everything in his power to make this fight worth watching for those who pay per head, but Silva will win. He’s better in almost every way and Griffin‘s aggression will only bring out the best in him.

UFC 101 Betting Lines

Yes, sharp players are counting down the days until preseason NFL betting begins. However, between now and NFL picks season, there is plenty of money to be made.

Topping the list is the UFC 101 betting lines which has two headline bouts. BJ Penn takes on Kenny Florian. “The Prodgiy” Penn has never lost at 155 pounds and is -230.

Meanwhile, in a battle of big boys, Anderson Silva goes toe-to-toe with Forrest Griffin. The Spider Silva is a prohibitive -350 and brings an impressive 24-4 mark into the ring.

The card at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia marks the Ultimate Fighting debut in the City of Brotherly Love. Extra security will be on hand for the fight in case a Philadelphia Flyers game breaks out.

Super sportsbook BetOnline has UFC picks in which they analyze why Forrest Griffin will pull the big upset.

While Penn-Florian and Silva-Griffin headline the card, the undercard has some tremendous matchups. Richardo Almeida is -165 to Kendall Grove and Josh Neer is -220 to Kurt Pellegrino highlighting the opening acts.

The first bout is at 8:15 EST, while PPV kicks in (no pun intended) at 10:00.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit  . . .

Jon Lester (9-7, 3.79 ERA) will try to pitch the Red Sox to a win over the Athletics on Thursday afternoon in a light day around the American League; Boston is 8-2 in the lefthander’s last 10 trips to the mound. Lester’s opponent in that contest will be lefthander Gio Gonzalez (2-2, 7.75 ERA), who beat the Yankees last time out. There are just three other games on the AL slate for Thursday, with Kansas City at Baltimore, Seattle at Texas and then finally the Yankees at the White Sox.

Sports Headlines…

Will anyone leave the ESPN beauty queen alone? Now TMZ claims they have the Erin Andrews 911 call in which she complains about paparazzi stalking her outside of her Georgia house. The media idiots left without incident…For those who check winning scores via IPhone, please note an Apple IPhone virus is expected to be unleashed today…We love the headlines “Roy Halladay May Remain a Blue Jay.” Thanks for the scoop. Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

It’ll be Rodrigo Lopez (3-0, 3.09 ERA) vs. Jonathan Sanchez (3-9, 4.92 ERA) on Thursday night as the Phillies begin a series in San Francisco. Righthander Lopez has given up just eight earned runs over his 23 1-3 innings of work so far this season, and Philadelphia is 4-0 in his four starts. Lefthander Sanchez has put up middling results since pitching a no-hitter back on July 10, allowing eight earned runs over his last 11 innings of work. The Giants lost his last two outings.

Also on the National League schedule for Thursday: Colorado at the Mets, San Diego at Cincinnati, Washington at Milwaukee, Houston at the Cubs, Atlanta at Florida, and the Dodgers at St. Louis. Hiroki Kuroda (3-5, 4.57 ERA) gets the ball for Los Angeles in that matchup; righthander Kuroda hasn’t won since July 3, but the Dodgers are 3-0 in his last three starts. The Cards counter with righthander Kyle Lohse (4-6, 4.35 ERA); St. Louis has won just two of Lohse’s last 10 outings.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The PGA Tour returns to the United States on Thursday for the opening round of the Buick Open at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Tiger Woods is pegged as the even-money Vegas favorite to get the win at the tournament despite his poor showing at the British Open two weeks ago. His biggest competitor, Jim Furyk, sits second on the list at 10/1 odds to grab the victory. Justin Leonard, Brian Gay, and Nick Watney trail those two at 20/1 odds.

The Canadian Football League begins its fifth week on Thursday night with Montreal at Edmonton. The Alouettes remain perfect at 4-0 on the season (3-1 against-the-spread), and they’re pegged as 6.5-point road favorites for Thursday’s matchup. The Eskimos sit in a three-way tie atop the CFL’s West Division with a 2-2 mark through their first four games – although they’re only 1-3 ATS on the year. The oddsmakers have Thursday’s total pegged at 54.5 points.

Finally, the WNBA offers up four games on Thursday, with San Antonio at Sacramento, Connecticut at Indiana, Washington at New York, and Phoenix at Atlanta. The Mercury got past Connecticut 95-80 last time out to move to 14-5 SU and ATS on the season; Cappie Pondexter exploded for 29 points in that contest. The Dream sit at 8-10 SU but a lucrative 11-5-2 ATS on the season after topping Detroit 98-95 last time out. Ivory Latta tossed in 22 points in that victory.
