NY Jets-Patriots

Connecticut Sports

Patriots coach Bill Belichick
said Wednesday that safety Rodney Harrison is out of Sunday’s Jets-Patriots
playoff game. Harrison, 34, who returned to the lineup Dec. 24 against the
Jaguars after missing six games with a broken shoulder blade, sustained
ligament damage to his right knee in the second quarter of a 40-23 win over the
Titans Sunday in Nashville, Tenn.

Newsday

The Jets trudged through the season, overcoming bad losses
to the Browns and Bills, earning emotional wins over the Patriots and Dolphins,
and now head into the playoffs. Finally, this team gets some respect. But then comes the nine-point spread from Vegas,
even though the two Jets-Patriots games this season were decided by an average
of five points, one of them a Jets win, and five of the last eight meetings
were decided by a touchdown or less. Following closely behind are the
statistical analyses, pointing out that the Jets are ranked 25th in
overall offense, 20th in overall defense and 24th in
rushing defense.

Giants-Eagles

Memphis Commercial Appeal

Jeremy Shockey’s swollen left
ankle has improved considerably and there is a good chance the Pro Bowl tight
end will play for the New York Giants on Sunday in the NFC wild card game
against the Philadelphia Eagles. Shockey had a team-high 66 catches for 623
yards and seven touchdowns.

Gainesville Sun

A funk that lasted into late November saw Philadelphia
drop five of six to fall below .500, but more importantly, the team lost star
quarterback Donovan McNabb to a season-ending knee injury. Garcia, though, went
on to lead the Eagles to four consecutive victories – he barely played in Week
17 while Philadelphia won a fifth
straight – and a 10-6 record to win the NFC East.

Ohio-Southern Miss

Associated Press

Ohio Bobcats into their first bowl game since 1968, facing
Southern Miss in the GMAC Bowl Sunday night. The Golden Eagles are playing in a
bowl game for the fifth consecutive year and ninth time in 10 years. The Bobcats lost 31-10 to Central
Michigan
in the Mid American Conference championship game to end a
seven-game winning streak. Likewise, Southern Miss fell in the Conference USA
title game, 34-20 to Houston. Ohio
turned to McRae and the ground attack after a 2-3 start, and he wound up
earning first-team All-MAC honors with 1,215 yards and 15 touchdowns. The
Bobcats are averaging 211 yards rushing in the past eight games, failing to
reach that number only in the league title game.

Tom Izzo announced Saturday that
Freshman guard Raymar Morgan
has been cleared to play for Michigan

on Sunday afternoon in Bloomington.
Morgan has missed the last 5 weeks with a stress reaction in his shin. He will
not start and it’s not clear how much he will play. With Morgan and Maurice
Joseph back the Spartans back court depth is finally improving.

Syracuse-Marquette

Press Notes

The Orange men’s basketball team (11-4, 0-1) will play its
second straight game against a ranked opponent on Sunday, Jan. 7 when it visits
#15/21 Marquette (13-3, 0-1) for an 8:00 EST tip off at the Bradley Center.
Sunday’s game marks the second road game for the Orange
and the third away from the Carrier DomeDue to
various injuries and the departure of freshman Mike Jones,
the Orange used just seven players
against #10 Pittsburgh in the
conference opener on Jan. 4. Despite limited bodies, Coach Boeheim’s squad gave the Panthers
all they could handle, leading the entire first half before Pittsburgh
pulled away in the final minutes of the second period for a 74-66 triumph.

COLORADO STATE +5.5 New Mexico

CSU is shooting the lights out right now making the 5.5
points look very big. They have shot 50
or better from the field in four straight and 6-of-8. They are shooting a
stunning 48.9 percent against teams normally allowing 44.6.

New Mexico
is beatable. They have lost 3-of-5 and
one of the wins was to Alcorn State, the other they beat a rebuilding Pepperdine team by five at home.

It’s a statement game for CSU. They are greatly improved but need to win a
road conference game. “That’s something we need to do,” head coach Dale Layer
said. “We need to have a breakthrough. I like some of the things we’re doing as
a team, and I think we’re progressing in that direction, but we just need to
cut through and get it done.”

They should win, but we like the buckets as cushion.

Pittsburgh-Syracuse

Press Notes

Pitt enters the contest ranked No. 10 in both the
Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today coaches polls. Syracuse
begins conference play unranked. Pitt is 2-1 in road games this season after
claiming victories at Buffalo and Auburn
and dropping a contest to Wisconsin.
The Panthers are 9-0 at home on the season. Pitt opens Big East play with a 12-2
record. It concluded its December slate with a 77-51 Saturday victory over
Florida A&M. Pitt concluded a difficult three-game
stretch against No. 7 Wisconsin, No. 15 Oklahoma State and Dayton.
Pitt dropped consecutive contests to Wisconsin
and Oklahoma State
and defeated Dayton by 30 points.
The combined record of those three Panthers opponents was 33-4. The 30-point
win over Dayton marked Pitt’s
largest margin of victory since it defeated Penn
State
91-54 on Dec. 10, 2005. It marked Pitt’s largest victory
of the year. With its back-to-back games against Wisconsin
and Oklahoma State,
Pitt played two consecutive games against nationally ranked non-conference
opponents.

Pitt and Syracuse
meet for the 95th time in series history. Syracuse
owns a 61-33 advantage in the series which began in 1914. The Panthers have
claimed eight of the series’ last 11 meetings. Pitt has won two of the last three matchups
between the two schools at the Carrier Dome. Pitt is 10-33 all-time vs. the
Orange in games played in Syracuse.

Santa Barbara-Long Beach State

Press Notes

UC Santa Barbara enters the week
with an overall record of 10-3 and a Big West Conference record of 2-0. The
Gauchos, winners of six of their last seven overall, swept a pair of games to
open league play last weekend. On Thursday, Dec. 28, UCSB
struggled past UC Riverside, 73-65, and then on
Saturday, Dec. 30, in an early-season showdown between the teams with the two
best non-conference records, the Gauchos defeated Cal State Fullerton, 84-76.
The consecutive wins came on the heels of a Dec. 22 loss at the University
of San Diego
which ended UCSB’s second four-game winning streak of the season.

Cincinnati-Middle Tennessee State

Detroit News

Brian Kelly will be coaching his new team, Cincinnati,
in the International Bowl on Jan. 6 against Western Michigan
in Toronto. There was some question
about who would coach the Bearcats in the game after Mark Dantonio
left Cincinnati to become the coach
Michigan State.
Pat Narduzzi, Cincinnati’s
defensive coordinator, was named interim coach before Kelly was hired Sunday. Cincinnati
athletic director Mike Thomas confirmed Tuesday that Kelly will have a coaching
staff in place to work the bowl. The number of CMU assistants who will join him
remains to be seen.

NFL

Chiefs-Colts

Sign On San Diego

The Indianapolis
run defense was by far the worst in the league, allowing 173 yards a game. The
Chiefs have Larry Johnson, the NFL’s second-leading rusher with 1,789 yards.
Nonetheless, Indianapolis is favored
by 6½ points, largely because it is 8-0 at home and has Peyton Manning and
Marvin Harrison to match anything Johnson can do – even though the Chiefs’
defense under Herman Edwards is certainly better than it was in January 2004.
For those who dabble in such things, the over-under is 51, a very reachable
figure unless the Chiefs keep the clock running with their rushing game. Funny
thing about the Colts: nobody expects much of them this year, unlike last
season, when they entered the playoffs as the top seed in the AFC. So maybe
they’ll go farther than most people believe.

Associated Press

Bob Sanders, who made the Pro Bowl last season, missed 12
of the past 14 games after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. His
absence exposed the Colts’ oft-criticized defense for what it lacks without
him: an energizing playmaker. At 5 feet 8 and 206 pounds, he is built like a
cannonball, hurls himself toward runners like a missile and is at his best in
run support. Without him, the Colts aren’t the same.In
2005, Sanders earned a trip to Hawaii
after helping the Colts allow the second-fewest points in the league. This
season, with Sanders primarily on the bench, the run defense dropped to No. 32
and set a franchise record by allowing 5.3 yards per carry. Coach Tony Dungy
warns Sanders cannot solve all the team’s defensive problems, but when he
plays, the Colts are different. The defense plays quicker, more aggressively
and with more confidence.

MasterLockLine.com

Sanders has practiced and we
expect him to play.

Cowboys-Seahawks

Sign On San Diego

The Cowboys are playing badly – the defense allowed 39
points to Detroit last week. The
Seahawks are playing better, perhaps in time for a push back to the Super Bowl in
a conference where nobody stands out. Seattle
is short at cornerback.

King 5

The bloom appears to off the Tony Romo
rose. But the Seahawks secondary woes may get him back on track. Seattle
could be down to converted safety Jordan Babineaux
and rookie Kelly Jennings on Saturday with Marcus Trufant
laid low by a high ankle sprain. This could give the Boys a chance to get Terry
Glenn and Terrell Owens free on the outside where both are most potent. The
smoothness of the Seahawks’ passing attack and the composure of quarterback
Matt Hasselbeck have evaporated. Maybe it was the injury Hasselbeck suffered
that cost him. Maybe it was getting used to not having an explosive Shaun
Alexander, the absence of guard Steve Hutchinson or getting Deion Branch
involved at wideout. Whatever it is, they’ve been off
much of the year and Hasselbeck’s regressed this
year. The Cowboys’ secondary has been a pack of big-play enablers all season.
Safety Roy Williams is laboring through an awful year in coverage and so is
fellow safety Keith Davis. Terence Newman and Anthony Henry, the corners, are
prone to giving up the big play as well. The Cowboys pass rush is highlighted
by DeMarcus Ware (11.5 sacks) but he’s been
hit-or-miss in a few games.

PORTLAND STATE +4 Northern
Arizona

This is a good time to play overrated NAU.
The ‘Jacks have struggled to a 6-7 record. NAU also split a pair of home conference games last week,
beating Sacramento State
and losing to Weber State.

Portland State’s
rotation has been a little uneven this season until recently as SR G Paul Hafford has stepped up to be a big scoring threat off the
bench. Hafford is averaging 14.0 points and 3.6
rebounds in 20.0 minutes over the last five games.

Northern Arizona’s defense is
non-existent. They allow more than 10
points above their normal average.

PSU has the edge in most
defensive categories, allowing about seven points less per game in 3.1 fewer
field goals and a 2.8 lower field goal percentage against. In the short conference season so far, the
‘Jacks allow a significant 5.5 lower field goal percentage.

Tennessee-Penn State

Mercury News

They’ve given up 26 points in the last four ballgames,”
said Philip Fulmer, the head coach of PSU’s Outback
Bowl opponent, Tennessee. For the
third straight season, the Lions fielded a top-20 defense, limiting opponents
to an average of 279 yards per game. Only 15 defenses in the nation surrendered
less. The unit had just one lackluster outing—in a 41-17 setback at Notre Dame
in September—but kept Penn State in every other game, routinely overcoming bad
field position and long stretches of work brought on by a struggling offense.
And the defense continued to improve, allowing just two touchdowns in the final
21 quarters of the regular season. The unit wound up ranking among the nation’s
top 11 in four important categories: scoring defense (14.8 points per game);
rush defense (87.8 yards per game); pass efficiency defense; and sacks (38).
Even in PSU’s three Big Ten Conference losses—against
top-ranked Ohio State,
No. 3 Michigan and No. 7 Wisconsin—the defense managed to make statements.
After watching Michigan and Ohio
State
roll up a combined 81 points
and nearly 1,000 yards of offense against each other, Sports Illustrated
marveled that the Lions’ defense managed to limit each to just two touchdowns.

Michigan-USC

Associated Press

There was no celebrating a traditional matchup in the Rose
Bowl – at least by the participants. Southern California of the Pac-10 and
Michigan of the Big Ten will meet New Year’s Day in the granddaddy of ‘em all, with each playing in the game for the third time in
four years. Both had hoped to be in Glendale, Ariz.,
a week later, playing for the national title. That honor goes to Ohio
State
and Florida
– ranked 1-2 in the final Bowl Championship Series standings released Sunday.
USC and Michigan had their
chances. The Trojans (10-2) entered the weekend with the inside track toward
facing the unbeaten Buckeyes, but a 13-9 loss to crosstown
rival UCLA on Saturday knocked them out.

No. 3 Michigan (11-1) was overtaken by Florida
(12-1) on the strength of the Gators’ 38-28 triumph over Arkansas
in the Southeastern Conference championship game later Saturday. The Wolverines
didn’t get their hoped-for rematch with the Buckeyes, who beat them 42-39 on Nov. 18 in the final regular-season game for
both teams. USC has played in 30 previous Rose Bowl games, going 21-9, while Michigan
has played in 23, going 11-12.

Boise-Oklahoma

Kitspan Sun

The Jan. 1 contest between his ninth-ranked Broncos (12-0)
and No. 7 Oklahoma (11-2) arguably is the biggest game in Boise
State
history and certainly the
biggest in Petersen’s six seasons at the school — five as offensive coordinator
and one as head coach.

Georgia Tech-West Virginia

Florida Times-Union

West Virginia’s
two offensive leaders are both slowed by injuries but are expected to play in
Monday’s Gator Bowl. Quarterback Pat White, who missed WVU’s
regular-season finale against Rutgers with a sprained
ankle, practiced Tuesday, as did running back Steve Slaton, who is battling a
thigh bruise suffered in a bowl practice n Morgantown,
W.Va.
, before Christmas. The obvious
matchup in the Gator Bowl will be West Virginia’s
spread offense against Georgia Tech’s blitzing, stunting defense. Tech coach
Chan Gailey said the Mountaineers’ ball-handling and
misdirection might keep the Yellow Jackets’ defense back on its heels a bit and
curtail the all-out pressure the unit favored most of the season. But Gailey said he believes the Jackets still have enough team
speed to make big plays, once they figure out who has the ball and where they’re
going. Joe Duffy’s sports betting selections are at www.GodsTips.com

Nebraska-Auburn

Associated Press

The No. 22 Cornhuskers (9-4) are in a January game for the
first time in five seasons. The New Year’s Day game will be only their fourth
Cotton Bowl – and first since 1980.

Huskers.com

Nebraska
players and coaches have been talking all week about the significance of
notching their 10th victory of the season. They say that recognizing
the challenge presented by a tough Auburn team, one that
Bill Callahan had pegged early on as a national championship contender. The
Tigers have beaten two top-10 teams this season (LSU
and Florida) while the Huskers
went 0-3 against top-10 teams (USC, Texas
and Oklahoma).

Arkansas-Wisconsin

Fox Sports

How does a team win 11 games, climb into the top 10 – and
still remain under the radar?

Ask Wisconsin,
which is having one of its best seasons but has been overshadowed by Big Ten
rivals Ohio State
and Michigan.The No. 6 Badgers (11-1) face No. 12
Arkansas in Monday’s Capital One Bowl. Wisconsin
has won eight straight since losing at Michigan
in September, and a victory will give the school its first 12-win season.

The Razorbacks (10-3) bounced back from two straight
losing seasons, winning 10 in a row at one point before losses to LSU and then Florida
in the Southeastern Conference title game. Arkansas
is led by Heisman Trophy runner-up Darren McFadden, who has rushed for 1,558
yards this season. Redshirt freshman P.J. Hill has
run for 1,533 for Wisconsin. The Badgers have faced
only one ranked team this season – Michigan.
Ohio State
was not on their conference schedule. Arkansas
is trying to avoid finishing with three straight losses. “You want to leave out
on a good note,” said Razorbacks receiver Marcus Monk, who has 949 yards
receiving this season. Wisconsin quarterback John Stocco missed his last two starts of the regular season
with a shoulder injury, but he’s back now. Arkansas
has its own injury concern – McFadden hurt his ankle in the SEC title game,
although he stayed in the game and has had plenty of time to heal.

The Badgers have allowed only 243.5 yards per game on
defense. MasterLockLine.com

Wake Forest-Louisville

Associated Press

Picked to finish last in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Wake
Forest
pulled off a championship
season that stunned many onlookers.The
Demon Deacons’ reward
for their record-setting year? A
season-ending matchup with one of the nation’s highest-powered offenses.

This is the ninth straight bowl trip for Louisville
– while Wake Forest
has been to only six other postseason games, most recently beating Oregon
38-17 in the 2002 Seattle Bowl. The Cardinals are 5-7-1 all-time in bowl games; the Demon Deacons 4-2,
including three straight wins. It appears to be a matchup of a strong offense
against a strong defense. The Cardinals are averaging nearly 39 points and 477
yards per game – stats that both rank among the top three out of 119 Division
I-A teams. Louisville’s only loss of
the season was to Rutgers, a game where the Cardinals
blew an 18-point lead and, with it, perhaps a chance to play No. 1 Ohio State
for the national championship. Meanwhile, Wake
Forest
held nine opponents to 17
points or less, winning each of those games, and kept Georgia Tech to a
season-low six points in winning the ACC championship. Already, this is the winningest season in Wake
Forest
history, which looks even
more impressive when considering that the Demon Deacons lost starting
quarterback Ben Mauk and running back Micah Andrews
to injuries early in the year.

The teams have one common opponent this season. Both beat Syracuse,
with Louisville winning 28-13 at
the Carrier Dome and Wake Forest
opening its year with a 20-10 home win over the Orange.

Notre Dame-LSU

Associated Press

The 11th-ranked Irish have had some long days
and nights against elite competition over the past year, starting with a 34-20
loss to Ohio State
in January’s Fiesta Bowl. The speedy Buckeyes burned the Irish for four
touchdowns of 56 yards or more. The speed of Michigan’s
defense caused problems for Notre Dame’s offensive line and quarterback Brady
Quinn, who threw a season-high three interceptions and fumbled once. Wolverine
receiver Mario Manningham caught three touchdown
passes, including a 69-yarder that broke the game open. USC’s
Dwayne Jarrett also had three touchdown catches against the Irish. Now the Irish will try to snap an eight-game losing streak in bowl
games on Jan. 3 against No. 4 LSU (10-2), which is
known for its speed, especially on defense.
Despite playing a tough
Southeastern Conference schedule, LSU has the nation’s
second-best defense, giving up just 238 yards a game. The Tigers also are third
in the nation in pass defense, giving up 145.5 yards a game. The Tigers are
almost as potent offensively, ranking 18th
in the nation at 404 yards a game. JaMarcus Russell
was third in pass efficiency, completing 68.5 percent and averaging 168 yards a
game. Weis is among those harping on it. He conceded before the USC game that
after weeks of playing teams like Navy, Air Force and Army, he was worried the
Irish might be slow to adjust to USC’s speed. To
guard against that in getting ready for the Sugar Bowl, he plans to have the
starting offense go against the starting defense, at least during early bowl preparations.No. 4 LSU, which had
yearned for a chance to head west for its first Rose Bowl, will instead stay in
its own state, making the short trip to New Orleans.
The Tigers (10-2) shot into Bowl Championship Series consideration by closing
the regular season with a six-game winning streak, capped by a 31-26 triumph at
Arkansas. The Razorbacks had
already clinched a spot in the Southeastern Conference title game, but LSU felt it might have been the best team in what views
itself as the country’s toughest league by the end of the year. Notre Dame
(10-2) will be playing in its first Sugar Bowl since 1992, when a Lou
Holtz-coached team knocked off Florida
39-29.LSU lobbied hard for a trip to the Rose Bowl, soliciting orders for more
than 42,000 tickets. It appeared the oldest and most glamorous of the
postseason games would pick the Tigers to face Michigan
– until Southern Cal’s loss to UCLA messed up those plans. Coach Les Miles
insisted it wasn’t a letdown to learn that the Tigers’ next game would be right
down the road instead of on the West Coast, saying it provides another chance
to help New Orleans recover from the devastating storm.

Cincinnati-Middle Tennessee State

Detroit News

Brian Kelly will be coaching his new team, Cincinnati,
in the International Bowl on Jan. 6 against Western Michigan
in Toronto. There was some question
about who would coach the Bearcats in the game after Mark Dantonio
left Cincinnati to become the coach
Michigan State.
Pat Narduzzi, Cincinnati’s
defensive coordinator, was named interim coach before Kelly was hired Sunday. Cincinnati
athletic director Mike Thomas confirmed Tuesday that Kelly will have a coaching
staff in place to work the bowl. The number of CMU assistants who will join him
remains to be seen.
