World Series of Poker Main Event

After eight days of play back in July, three months of waiting and 18 hours of play on Saturday, the 2009 WSOP Main Event has finally come to a conclusion, breaking records on the way. At 2am local time this morning, Joe Cada became the youngest player to ever win a WSOP Main Event, pocketing $8,547,042 for that win, and it came on the final hand of the longest Main Event final table ever played.

Just eight days shy of his 22^nd birthday, Cada beat out the record set by 2008 WSOP Main Event champ Peter Eastgate, who himself bested the record set by Phil Hellmuth 20 years prior. This was the first WSOP that Cada had been eligible to play due to his age, and during the course of the summer cashed in two other events along with his monumental, record-breaking win at the 2009 WSOP Main Event.

Entering the final table just fifth in chips, Cada had an uphill struggle to reach the heads-up match, especially against a table that included several experienced players, like Jeff Shulman and Eric Buchman, and the widely acknowledged “best player in poker” Phil Ivey. However, Cada was able to catch the right cards at the right times – causing Hellmuth to dub him the “luckiest poker player in WSOP history” at one point – to meet Maryland logger Darvin Moon heads-up for the title.

Moon came into the final table with an impressive chip lead and found himself at or near the top for most of the final table, experiencing swings down to as low as third and then back up to the lead. However, by the time he was to face Cada for the title, Moon was at a distinct disadvantage, not only with almost two-thirds less chips than his opponent, but also with much less experience playing heads-up poker.

The heads-up battle lasted 87 hands over two hours and 21 minutes and came down to a classic race situation in which Cada’s pocket nines went up against the Q-J suited of Moon. The board blanked out for Moon, giving Cada the title, bracelet and a place in the history books and Moon some great stories to tell his logging friends back in Maryland. Oh, and $5,182,928.

Ohio-Buffalo ESPN2 Odds

If you are a fan of or regular bettor on Mid-American Conference football, this week is heaven for you: There is a at least one nationally televised MAC game on each weeknight beginning Tuesday with Ohio at Buffalo, with the Bulls -2.5 on Bodog’s college football spread.

Meanwhile, starting running back Ike Nduka, the team’s leading rusher with 598 yards on 6.2 yards per carry, and cornerback Joe Petit both have been ruled out due to injury. True freshman Jeffvon Gill, who ran for 172 yards last week against Bowling Green, will earn his first start at tailback.

Ohio’s defense is tops in the nation in turnovers forced with 27 and in fumbles recovered (14). Don’t overlook this stat when pondering the college football odds on this one: The Bobcats are fourth in the country in kicks/punts blocked, and Buffalo had two punts blocked in its last game – Bulls coach Turner Gill has switched punters in the wake of that.

Nuggets-Bulls Preview

Joakim Noah and the Chicago Bulls look to open 4-0 at home for the first time since the team’s last championship season tonight, when they host a Denver Nuggets club that’s dropped two in a row.

Coming off their best win of the season, the Miami Heat look to continue their best start in 10 years tonight and extend the recent woes of the visiting Washington Wizards.

NBA basketball betting odds have the Heat listed as 6.5-point favorites.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has six games on the schedule for Tuesday, including Washington at Miami. The Wizards dropped to 2-5 on the season on Sunday, falling 102-90 at home to the Suns. Gilbert Arenas had 20 points in that defeat for Washington, while Brendan Haywood picked up 10 points and 10 boards. The Heat sit at 5-1 on the year after getting past Denver 96-88 at home on Friday night. Dwyane Wade had a team-high 22 points in that win, and Jermaine O’Neal had 18 points.

Rounding out the action on the hardwood for Tuesday: Orlando at Charlotte, Denver at Chicago, Portland at Memphis, Oklahoma City at Sacramento, and Houston at Dallas. The Rockets are 4-2 on the season after getting past the Thunder 105-94 at home on Friday night. Trevor Ariza and Carl Landry each had 24 points in that win. The Mavs, also 4-2, knocked off the Raptors 129-101 at home Saturday. Dirk Nowitzki poured in 29 points and had nine boards that day.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL offers up a half-dozen games on Tuesday, including Pittsburgh at Boston. The 12-5-0 Penguins were blanked 5-0 in San Jose in their last game on Saturday night, with goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury giving up three goals on 14 shots before getting yanked. The 7-7-2 Bruins doubled up Buffalo 4-2 at home last time out, with Tuukka Rask making 28 saves in the victory. Mark Recchi, Zdeno Chara, Byron Bitz, and Marco Sturm had the Boston markers on Saturday.

Also on the ice on Tuesday: Calgary at Montreal, Edmonton at Ottawa, Vancouver at St. Louis, Nashville at San Jose, and Minnesota at Toronto. The 6-10-0 Wild held on for a 3-2 win over the Stars on Saturday, with Cal Clutterbuck, Mikko Koivu, and Marek Zidlicky all scoring. The 3-7-5 Leafs won their second straight game last time out, blasting Detroit 5-1. Phil Kessel picked up his first marker as a Maple Leaf in that contest, while Jonas Gustavsson made 35 saves.

Week 10 NFL has perhaps the best game this year for the football fan and perhaps the sports bettor. It’s Sunday night football when the Patriots vs. Colts take place. For whatever reason the teams come home a little bit tired and out of sorts needing a game to regroup and get back into it. This is actually a theory that a former NBA Head Coach once told me and I have followed and watched it succeed to the umpteenth degree.
 
I am not saying that this theory is foolproof because it isn’t but to get Brandon Roy and the Blazers in this spot is fine with me. Portland is becoming a semi force these days and even outside of the Rose Garden should outclass the road weary Grizz. Look for Roy to pour in about 30 and LaMarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden, Andre Miller and the Blazers to improve to 5-3 and do so in fairly emphatic fashion.
