Eastern Michigan-Kent

Record Pub

Wins in the final two games of the season would guarantee KSU just its third winning season since 1972. The Flashes
(5-5, 4-2) are also still alive in both the race for the MAC East Division title
and a bowl invitation. A win over Eastern combined with an Akron
win at division leader Ohio would
create a tie between the Flashes and Bobcats at the top of the division
standings. Ohio would still own
the tiebreaker with Kent State,
but that scenario would set up an interesting final week with Ohio,
KSU and Akron
all still alive for the East title. Kent’s
Julian Edelman will be back in the lineup at quarterback after sitting out last
week’s game at Virginia Tech with a bruise near his chest. Michael Machen, the Flashes’ starter in 2005, started in place of
Edelman, while freshman H-back Darren Rogers, a converted high school
quarterback, also took a few snaps on designed run plays. KSU
is expecting tight end Brian Bell to return to the lineup after a two-game
absence due to an ankle injury. Running back Tony Howard will most likely sit
out, however, with an injured rotator cuff. Howard also missed the Virginia
Tech game. Joe Duffy’s GodsTips.com,

Central
Michigan-Northern
Illinois

Press Notes

With a trip to the 2006 Mid-American Conference
Championship Game secured, CMU travels to defending West Division champ Northern
Illinois
. CMU has won five straight, and six of its last seven
overall, and is seeking its first eight win-season
since the 1994 MAC champion Chippewas finished 9-3. NIU
has dropped two of its last three following a four-game winning streak. CMU
leads the all-time series, 21-19-1, but has dropped eight straight to the
Huskies.

Daily Chronicle

Actually, the Huskies could benefit from the Chippewas
winning the West last Saturday. Kelly might elect to rest some starters due to
the short week, and to limit the possibility of any major injuries occurring
before the Nov. 30 MAC Championship game at Ford Field. But the Huskies, who
have lost 12 of their last 13 games to Toledo,
own an eight-game series winning streak against the Chippewas, providing the
ideal motivational tool for Kelly. “I can probably lean on them a little harder
now,” Kelly said. “Obviously, they won a championship. Now, they need to finish
out. Northern Illinois is a team that’s trying to play
for a bowl game. They’re going to be ready. We’ve not beaten Northern
Illinois
going into my third season. There is
plenty of things out there for me relative to getting our football team ready
to play a good Northern Illinois football team.” At 5-5
and 3-3, NIU coach Joe Novak said the Huskies have
more than pride on the line. The Huskies need to win their final two games to
claim their seventh straight winning season and to remain in the chase for a
bowl game. MasterLockLine.com

Xavier-Virginia Commonwealth

Press Notes

Xavier is off to a 1-0 start under third-year head coach
Sean Miller after winning its 17th straight season opener with the
win over Coastal Carolina. XU was 21-11 overall last season, recording its
ninth 20-win season in the last 10 years and its 19th 20-win season
in the last 24 years. XU has appeared in five of the last six NCAA Tournaments.
The Musketeers won the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship by winning four games in
four days this past March, making NCAA history by accomplishing that feat twice
(having also done it in 2004). The 2006 championship was XU’s second A-10 title
in three years and its fourth in the past nine years, including 1998, 2002,
2004 and 2006. All five starters are back from the team that made the
late-season championship run, including seniors Justin Cage and Justin Doellman. Stevie Vincent’s BetOnSports360.com is pioneer in forensic

returned Saturday.  Virginia

when it hosts Sacramento State (1-2). The Pioneers will be looking to avoid
their first 0-3 record to begin a season since the 1970-71 season. DU has been 0-2 seven times since that season, and has won
its third game seven consecutive times. Sacramento

The Panthers won’t be throwing the ball every down in
tonight’s Backyard Brawl.
But you may see them air it out more than usual. With quarterback Tyler Palko playing well and the running game’s inability to run
out the fourth quarter in a loss at Connecticut, coach Dave Wannstedt may let
loose a little on offense. And since West Virginia’s
run defense is better than its pass defense, Palko
becomes the focal point of Pitt’s upset bid. WVU is

Akron-Ohio

Sports Network

The Ohio Bobcats will try to clinch their first-ever MAC
East Division title when they host the Akron Zips this Thursday night at Peden Stadium in Athens. The Zips come into the contest with
victories in three of their last four games. Akron
has started to show signs of life over the past few weeks,
however, it could be too late for the Zips to make a push for the division
title. The Zips are scoring just 22.9 ppg this year behind 338.3 total ypg. A big reason for the sudden improvement on offense is
the progress of the ground game. In the recent victory over Buffalo,
the rushing attack continued its positive strides, accounting for 144 yards on
37 carries. MasterLockLine.com has the top plays from the top
sports service in their highest ranked sports.

Post Online

A win Thursday will give the Bobcats (7-3, 5-1 MAC) their
first-ever MAC East Division crown and all but guarantee a spot in one of the
three bowl games MAC teams are eligible to make, regardless of what happens in
the MAC championship game Nov. 30. After a surprising 2005 campaign in which
they defeated Northern Illinois for the MAC
championship, the Zips were picked to repeat as East Division champions in the
preseason poll. Early struggles in its conference schedule, however, have left Akron
(5-5, 3-3 MAC) in a position where it would need to win out, along with a
little help, to fulfill the prediction. Led by a balanced offense and a stingy
rush defense, the Zips are winners of three of their last four and seem to be
looking like the team those polled, and Solich,
expected it to be. “It’s obvious that they’ve got talent and it’s obvious that
they’re playing good football right now,” Solich
said. “The combination of those two things can make things difficult for the
team.” In its last four games, the Akron
offense has averaged 377.5 yards per game thanks mostly to the efforts of
quarterback Luke Getsy and tailback Dennis Kennedy. Getsy currently ranks second in the MAC, averaging 230.3
passing yards per game while Kennedy is the conference’s third best rusher,
gaining 95.3 yards per contest.Unlike many of the
quarterbacks Ohio has faced this season, Getsy is a
more traditional passer, letting his arm do most of the damage and only running
for yards when absolutely necessary. Muncy said that
the team is aware of Getsy’s throwing abilities and
stressed that the team can not underestimate his ability to scramble. The 11
players the Zips line up on defense aren’t slouches either, particularly
against the run, ranking fourth in the MAC by allowing just 131.7 yards on the
ground per contest. This could spell trouble for the Bobcats, as a strong
reliance on the ground game has keyed the team’s current five-game winning
streak. Ohio is averaging 218.2
rushing yards while gaining just 87.6 yards per game through the air over the
past five games.  Joe Duffy’s sports

Michigan State-Texas

Press Notes

After capturing the East Lansing Regional of the College
Hoops Classic with victories over Brown and Youngstown
State
, the Spartans are ready to
play the Championship Rounds in New York City.
Michigan State
and Texas are very similar in
that they both lost a lot of their experience, scoring and rebounding from last
year. MSU fills the void with a mix of returners and freshman, while UT leans heavily on
first-year players. Michigan State
defeated Brown (45-34) and Youngstown
State
(86-61) to advance to the
Championship Rounds of the College Hoops Classic. In the season opener, MSU managed to score just 45 points, but held Brown to 34,
the lowest total by a Spartan opponent since Northwestern scored 29 on Jan. 27, 2000. The next day, the
Spartan offense erupted for 86 points. Through three games, Michigan State
leads the Big Ten in scoring defense (45.3 ppg) and field-goal percentage
defense (.320), while ranking tied for second in blocked shots (5.33 bpg) and third in 3-point field-goal percentage defense
(.281). Texas advanced to New
York
with two victories in the Austin Regional by an
average margin of victory of +42.5 points. In the regional semifinal, UT
defeated Alcorn State,
103-44, behind 20 points from freshman Kevin Durant. In the second game, the
Longhorns used a 28-point effort from A.J. Abrams to
defeat Chicago State, 92-66. Stevie Vincent’s BetOnSports360.com is pioneer in forensic
handicapping and part of OffshoreInsiders.com
Like Michigan State, Texas had three players
drafted in the 2006 NBA Draft (LaMarcus Aldridge, P.J. Tucker and Daniel Gibson). The Longhorns return just
14 percent of their scoring, 10 percent of their rebounding and 17 percent of
their minutes played from last season. Texas
roster features seven true freshmen and the probable starting lineup consists
of three freshmen and two sophomores.

South Carolina-USC

Press Notes

The USC men’s basketball team (0-0) opens the season vs. South
Carolina
(1-0). Two-time defending NIT champion South
Carolina
returns two starters and five lettermen from
a team that went 23-15 during the 2005-06 season. They have added seven
newcomers, including three transfers that are eligible for action this season.
USC returns four starters from a team that went 17-13. Things would really be
looking up for the Trojans if not for the tragic shooting death of freshman
point guard Ryan Francis last May and for junior All-Pac-10 guard Gabe Pruitt being academically ineligible for the first

the Pac-10 and senior center Abdoulaye N’diaye, who had 47 blocks and averaged 4.5 points and 4.7
rebounds per game in his first year at USC. The Trojans have brought in a
strong recruiting class which features seven freshmen and is expected to give
the Trojans the depth that they lacked a year ago. The Trojans lead the Pac-10
in returning production with 83.7 percent of their scoring and 86.5 percent of
their rebounding from the 2005-06 season returning (includes Pruitt’s numbers).
USC also leads with 96 percent of their blocked shot producers returning. The
Trojans return the conference’s top two scorers from last season (Young – 17.3

Young (6.6). Senior Lodrick Stewart is the top active

This will be the seventh overall meeting between the Blue
Devils and Spartans, with Duke holding a perfect 6-0 record against UNCG. The teams have met in each of the past two seasons
with the Blue Devils. Don’t expect the Spartans to be impressed when they line
up across from the Blue Devils. UNC-G returns all
five starter’s from last year’s team that pushed Duke for most of the first
half before J.J. Redick’s
shooting display (35 points) proved to be too much. In addition to Hines, the
Spartans return scoring guard Randy Hickman, who scored 23 points (9-of-15
shooting) a season ago.

CLASSIC QUALITY OVER QUANTITY NIGHT

College basketball reigns supreme tonight, Wise Guy and

Sometimes we have more plays on short card than we do on a full slate.

NBA

SEATTLE -4 Philadelphia

The Sixers have come back down to earth quickly. Following
a shocking 3-0 start, they have lost three in a row. They face a Seattle
team sky high following a three game road winning streak.

Remember, Seattle
comes in undervalued off a very disappointing year. Even their losses have been
competitive, with a four point margin the biggest they’ve suffered. That
includes road games at Miami and
Orlando in back to back nights.

The Sixers open a short but difficult road trip tonight at
KeyArena against the Seattle SuperSonics,
a team that put up 119 points Monday against the New Jersey Nets, considered
one of the league’s better teams.

The Sonics, along with the next two opponents on this
trip, Phoenix and the Los Angeles
Clippers, average more than 100 points.

For a Sixers team that has spent a lot of time patching up
holes in the defense, a main contributor to its three-game losing streak, a
shoot-out with one, two or all three of these opponents is not desirable.

Philly has allowed 103.7 points per game in their recent
three-game skid. It gets ugly tonight.

BUTLER +3 Notre Dame

The Irish have eight freshman and sophomore, so expect
some inconsistency. Fresh of blowout of IPFW, we look for them to get blown out by a good Butler
team. Butler has beaten Notre Dame
five straight, yet is a pup tonight.

The Irish won’t be able to exploit Butler
inside they way they did against an overmatched IPFW
team. We look for Butler to make it
six straight.

NFL

Here are news and notes from OffshoreInsiders.com
private clipboard.  They are compiled from hometown newspapers
and the team’s own press releases.

Buccaneers-Panthers

Houston Chronicle

The Buccaneers (2-6) have scored a total of seven points
in the first quarter all season. The Panthers (4-4) have led going into the
fourth quarter in seven of eight games, only to lose three of them. They haven’t
scored a point in the second half in the last two games, both losses. While Gradkowski has thrown only one interception, the Bucs have
the second-worst offense in the league. Five times, Carnell “Cadillac” Williams
has rushed for 48 yards or less, including last week, when he managed only 39
yards on 12 carries against the Saints. On defense,
Simeon Rice has only two sacks as a sore shoulder has affected his play. He and
defensive tackle Ellis Wyms missed practice time late
in the week and may not play Monday, giving coach Jon Gruden more headaches. The Bucs rank 22nd
in the NFL in total defense.
  It’s
been a long two weeks for the Panthers, who had a bye last week after being
outscored 25-0 in the fourth quarter of a Sunday night loss to Dallas
a week earlier. Carolina committed
three turnovers in the final 10 minutes to blow a 14-10 lead. It left star
receiver Steve Smith grumbling about the play calling and for being asked to
return punts. Smith hasn’t answered football questions since, and coach John
Fox wouldn’t say if Smith will return punts against the Buccaneers.Johnson,
never shy to talk, thinks the Panthers get complacent when they get the lead. Carolina
has been outscored 77-30 in the fourth quarter.

The Ledger

As if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t have enough
problems, now they face a new challenge.Monday night’s
game at Carolina will be the first
of three games in 11 days. For a 2-6 team nursing some
injuries that’s not a good recipe for trying to turn a season around.

Youngstown-Duquesne

Press Notes

Duquesne’s projected starting lineup for the Youngstown
State game consists of three freshmen (Robert Mitchell, Scott Grote & Stephen Wood), a junior college transfer
(Reggie Jackson) and a sophomore (returnee Aaron Jackson). DU
has never opened a season with three freshman in the starting five (since
freshman were granted eligibility in 1972-73). Only three players on the
opening day roster (Aaron Jackson, Kieron Achara and Almamy Thiero) have Division I playing experience Of the three, Aaron Jackson is the only one who hasn’t missed
extensive practice time due to injury. It was learned Friday that Achara will be out indefinitely with stress fractures in
his left foot .Thiero, a first-year graduate student
transfer from Memphis, is back at practice following Oct. 9 arthroscopic surgery
on his left knee. DU will have seven scholarship
players available for the YSU game. DU is coming off
a 3-24 season (ranked 308 in the final RPI).

Lafayette-Indiana

Press Notes

Lafayette is
1-0 on the season, coming off a 76-70 win at Wagner Friday evening. Indiana
also enters Monday’s game at 1-0 after defeating Indianapolis,
83-46, Friday night.

Notre Dame-Butler

Press Notes

Here’s some of the numbers from Friday night’s win over IPFW. Notre Dame shot 61.5 percent in the first half. Notre
Dame returns three starters (Colin Falls,
Russell Carter and Rob Kurz) and five others who
earned monograms. The strength of the Irish once again will rest with its
ability to score points. Under Mike Brey, Notre Dame teams have demonstrated the ability to score points. A year
ago, the Irish averaged 76.4 points per game and topped the 80-plus mark 12
times. Falls (13.8 ppg.), Carter (11.5 ppg.) and Kurz
(6.4 ppg.) should be Notre Dame’s top scoring threats as the Irish once again
expect to have a potent offensive attack, but hope to improve defensively and
the 70.7 points per game they yielded a year ago. With the graduations of Chris
Quinn (17.7 ppg., 6.4 aspg.),
Torin Francis (11.6 ppg., 9.4 rpg.) and Rick Cornett
(5.4 ppg., 3.6 rpg.), there will be plenty of opportunity for contributions
from a new group of individuals. Notre Dame owns an all-time record of 84-18
(.824) all-time in season openers and have won all seven of its openers under
head coach Mike Brey. Stevie Vincent’s BetOnSports360.com is pioneer in forensic
handicapping and part of OffshoreInsiders.com
    Since
the opening of the Joyce Center in 1968-69, Irish teams are 33-6 (.846) in home
openers. The last time Notre Dame lost a season opener at home was to Miami of
Ohio on November 13, 1998.
Under head coach Mike Brey, the Irish are 22-2 (.917)
all-time in games played during the month of November. The two November losses
have been to Creighton 80-75 in the championship game of the Guardians Classic
on Nov. 26, 2002 and to North
Carolina
State

(61-48) at the John R. Wooden Tradition at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis
on Nov. 26.

Northern Arizona-Arizona State

Press Notes

Arizona State University men’s basketball team returns six
lettermen for the 2006-2007 season and opens the Herb Sendek
era on Nov. 13 against Big Sky favorite and 2006 regular season champion
Northern Arizona (21-11/12-2 in Big Sky last year) followed by a Nov. 15 game
against Cal State San Bernardino. Joe Duffy’s sports betting selections are at www.GodsTips.com With ASU
losing its top two scorers from last season in guards Kevin Kruger (15.0 ppg.)
and Bryson Krueger (12.3 ppg.), look for ASU’s three
freshmen perimeter players (Christian Polk, Jerren
Shipp and Derek Glasser) to get their chances for
quality playing time early.

Fordham-Tennessee

Press Notes

The Vols opened their 98th
season of varsity basketball with an 82-53 victory over Middle Tennessee Friday
in Knoxville. The Vols return two starters, including their top scorer from
last season. Chris Lofton, a preseason Wooden Award candidate, led the Vols with 17.2 points in 2005-06 while making 114
3-pointers, the second-highest total in Southeastern Conference history. Dane
Bradshaw, the lone senior on the squad, returns after averaging 7.1 points and
5.4 rebounds while leading the SEC in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.76). One of
the best sixth-men in the league last season, junior guard JaJuan
Smith averaged 9.5 points last year.

NFL SPECIALIST 49-24 NFL, WINNING WEEKS
10/11

No handicapper dominates any sport the way Joe Duffy’s
GodsTips does the NFL. Going back to the preseason, we have had winning weeks
10-of-11 in the NFL.  Including
postseason, it’s winning weeks 20-of-24. Our 49-24 run
is unfair to us, because several were moneyline dogs, including the Washington
Redskins +155 as the NFC Moneyline Dog of the Year last week. Wise Guy plays
are 14-4, and ditto about the moneyline dogs there. We have five NFL winners,
including a Wise Guy and of course check back for steam plus basketball. Click now to

NFL

SAN DIEGO -1 Cincinnati

The Chargers are loaded and like we say, Marty
Schottenheimer is a great regular season coach.
We’ll talk again come playoff time. The best way to stop a slumping, but
talented offense is to keep them off the field.
San Diego leads the league
in time of possession. The Bengals have lost two straight games and four out of
the last five to drop to 4-4 and face a daunting schedule in the second half of
the season, beginning with Sunday’s home game against AFC West co-leader San
Diego
. The Chargers are 6-2, have failed to score at
least 23 points in a game just once and their two defeats have come by a
combined total of six points.

San Diego’s
Philip Rivers has completed 66.4 percent of his passes and thrown 10 touchdowns
compared to just three interceptions. San Diego
head coach Marty Schottenheimer was criticized early in the season for limiting
Rivers and the passing game, but Rivers now has as many completions as Palmer
(158) on 20 fewer attempts.

Remember, his counterpart, Carson Palmer is off his game,
ten months after surgery for a knee injury that many thought would end his
career.
