2009 SEC Preview From Football Handicapping Standpoint

As stated before, preseason college football publications do have some handicapping value, but only the sharp players know what the worth is from a handicapping standpoint. In short, we compare the preseason consensus to the sportsbook odds to isolate overvalued and undervalued teams.

Alabama is the overwhelming favorite in both the consensus and college football futures odds. Eight of 12 magazines project the Crimson Tide to win the division, with a ninth projecting a tie. The oddsmakers have them at 5/4 faves.

The oddsmakers have Ole Miss the second favorites at 19/10, just a small notch above LSU at 2/1. However, the annuals cumulative has the two flip-flopped by a small margin. While the oddsmakers have Arkansas and Auburn each at 13/2, the compilation has Arkansas the better team. Mississippi State is the unanimous doormat.

We rate LSU -1 meaning slightly overvalued and Ole Miss +1 at marginally undervalued in the oddsmakers eyes.

Florida is an eye-popping 2/17 at Bodog to win the SEC West, followed by Georgia at 5/1 and South Carolina at 8/1. Tennessee is 12/1.

However, the hacks have Vol Nation a comfortable third behind the Gators and Bulldogs, and South Carolina is a distant fourth.

Rocky Top is +2 on our cheat sheet, the Gamecocks -2 on the value meter.

While the magazines have Vanderbilt and Kentucky closely rated, the linesmaker has the Wildcats at 25/1 and the Commodores at 50/1. Vanderbilt is +1, Kentucky -2 on our assessment scale. Value ratings are -3/+3.

NFL Betting ESPN Odds: Vikings vs. Texans MNF

The Minnesota Vikings play the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football. The ESPN NFL odds have Houston -3.5 even at BetUs Sportsbook or -3 -115 at Bet Online with a total of 38.5.

The Vikings have a newly acquired QB by the name of Brett Favre. He is expected to play the entire first half.

Minnesota entered the weekend with the fewest turnovers and fewest points given up in the preseason at zero and 16 respectively.

Most of the Texans starters will play three quarters tonight. Houston will look to tighten up a defense that was torched for 173 yards and 6.4 yards per carry last week. Journeyman Mike Bell got 10 carries for 100 yards. Now they face last year’s NFL leading rusher Adrian Peterson.

According to Texans head coach Gary Kubiak, “several” starting positions are still up for grabs.

Vikings sack artist Jared Allen is probable after missing last week with a sprained ankle.

Former Texans QB starter Sage Rosenfels is probable after missing last week. Rosenfels started five games each of the last two years when starter Matt Schaub got hurt. He is battling Tarvaris Jackson for the No. 2 spot behind Favre.

They are expected to split time in the second half, with Jackson playing the third, Rosenfels the fourth. “Sounds like a lot of passes,” says Bob Warner of NFL betting blog Lines-Maker.com says, perhaps implying the second half over is looking good at the sportsbooks.

Another motivation for Houston is they are considered a playoff contender, but they need to come out of the gates quicker, so this may be an extra important dress rehearsal. They are 10-5 straight up in December under Gary Kubiak, but only 3-9 in September.

Minnesota WR Bernard Berrian is questionable to doubtful. TE Jim Kleinsasser is likely out.

Top expert pick on this game: The Center of the Handicapping Universe passed on the side, but nails the total. That makes us 17-7 in the NFL the last 25 (déjà vu) including 9-2 the last 11. Detroit Saturday the NFL Preseason Game of the Year among them.

Barclays Golf Morning Line; UFC 102

Bettors are checking out the UFC 102 live stream and sportsbooks will go over the results, while the purists will watch the Little League World Series live.

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Sox face the Blue Jays’ ace, the Phillies try to top the Braves, and the NFL preseason spotlight shines on Denver.

Tiger Woods odds…

Tiger Woods is now 7/1 in the revised odds to win the 2009 Barclays Liberty National Golf Club. On the morning line, Steve Marino is 9/4 and Paul Goydos is 11/5. See all the golf odds.

Bloodbath for sportsbooks…

The top NFL handicapper of all-time is GodsTips and they nailed the NFL Preseason Game of the Year. It’s insane how good the NFL specialists are. Center of the Handicapping Universe is 16-7 including 8-2 the last 10 in the NFL. The Preseason Game of the Year on Detroit, an underdog, wins outright.

The strongest NFL preseason release by Stevie Vincent ever was on the Titans and Cavaliers over. The world’s best handicappers are having an even better year than usual, but luckily for the sportsbooks, the sharps are having a horrid year. There is a reason why sharps win more while squares lose more than ever.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The lone NFL preseason game on Sunday is a good one – the Bears and new quarterback Jay Cutler will travel to Denver to take on the Broncos. The oddsmakers have the Broncos pegged as 2.5-point home favorites for Sunday’s game, even though they are 0-2 so far during the preseason. Cutler’s Bears enter the game at 1-1, as they beat the Giants 17-3 in Week 2 exhibition action. Cutler went 8-of-13 for 121 yards passing and a touchdown for Chicago that day.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It’ll be Jair Jurrjens (10-8, 2.91 ERA) vs. Joe Blanton (8-6, 3.88 ERA) as the Braves meet the Phillies on Sunday Night Baseball this week. Righthander Jurrjens had to settle for a no-decision against the Padres last time out, allowing just one earned run over his 7 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Blanton is coming off a no-decision as well; he gave up three earned runs over six innings against the Pirates last time out. Philadelphia is 2-3 over Blanton’s last five starts.

Also on tap in the National League on Sunday: the Dodgers at Cincinnati, San Diego at Florida, Pittsburgh at Milwaukee, Washington at St. Louis, the Mets at the Cubs, Houston at Arizona, and Colorado at San Francisco. Jason Hammel (8-7, 4.43 ERA) will take on Matt Cain (12-4, 2.39 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Hammel has given up three or fewer earned runs in each of his last five outings. Righthander Cain hasn’t been able to pick up a victory since July 24.

Meanwhile, Roy Halladay (13-7, 3.03 ERA) will pitch at Fenway Park on Sunday against the Red Sox and Jon Lester (10-7, 3.60 ERA). Righthander Halladay was knocked around by Tampa Bay last time out (seven earned runs in six innings), and he was beaten by the BoSox on August 19. Lefthander Lester has given up three or fewer earned runs in nine of his past 10 trips to the mound. Lester got an easy win over the Jays on August 20, allowing one earned run over eight innings.

Elsewhere on Sunday’s American League schedule it’ll be the White Sox at the Yankees, Cleveland at Baltimore, Texas at Minnesota, Oakland at the Angels, Kansas City at Seattle, and Tampa Bay at Detroit. The Rays will give the ball to righthander Jeff Niemann (12-5, 3.87 ERA) in that contest, while the Tigers send righthander Justin Verlander (14-7, 3.38 ERA) to the mound. Verlander is coming off a shaky win over the Angels, surrendering four earned runs over 5 2-3 innings.

Roaring around the track . . .

The drivers of Formula 1 will remain in Europe this weekend for Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix. Rubens Barrichello took the checkered flag last time out, winning the European Grand Prix in Spain. Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen finished second and third at that event, while points leader Jenson Button was seventh. Button now has a 72-54 lead on Barrichello in the drivers championship.

Tipping off on the hardwood  . . .

Finally, it’s Minnesota at Washington, Chicago at New York, and Connecticut at Los Angeles in WNBA action on Sunday. The Sparks fell to 14-14 straight-up and 14-14 against-the-spread on the season with a 98-90 loss to Phoenix in their last contest. Los Angeles was missing guards Kristi Harrower and Candace Parker in that defeat due to personal reasons; Parker is expected to be back in action on Sunday. Los Angeles was beaten 82-71 by Connecticut on the road on July 14.

Bears-Broncos NFL Handicapping Info

Oh intangibles handicappers will love this one. Former Broncos QB Jay Cutler returns to his lovelorn team. It marks the home debut of head coach Josh McDaniels who jilted Cutler and Kyle Orton, his replacement. Pro Bowl WR Brandon Marshall has been suspended for acting like a jackass. Last year he has 104 receptions. Denver has zero takeaways and six turnovers in the preseason so far.

The Bears will be facing a 3-4 defense when they open against Green Bay, so this game is the perfect dress rehearsal for them at it’s the same scheme employed by Denver.

Look for Chicago to air it out as offensive coordinator Ron Turner admitted he will call plays to learn who will win the No. 3 and 5 receiver spots.

New Broncos S Brian Dawkins will get his first action of the year. Dawk is a seven-time Pro Bowler. Broncos regulars will play into the third quarter.

For Denver, RBs LaMont Jordan and Knowshown Moreno both missed practice time, so Correll Buckhalter and Peyton Hills will be their top running backs.

Chicago has allowed a generous 121 rushing yards per game in the preseason so far, but Denver has gotten just 3.5 yards per carry.

Top expert pick on this game: The founder of revolutionary forensic sports handicapping Stevie Vincent has the biggest side and the greatest NFL service ever GodsTips, the total at the home of the best NFL handicappers OffshoreInsiders.com.

NFL Betting Predictions

The early Colts vs. Lions betting preview is in the free pick and articles section of OffshoreInsiders.com. All the NFL picks needed for week three preseason NFL betting are up.

Ravens vs. Panthers

Carolina‘s top two running backs are hurt. Jonathan Stewart is doubtful, but DeAngelo Williams is probable. They combined for the highest total yards for teammates in the last 24 years.

Panthers top WR Steve Smith is a game time decision. LB Thomas Davis is questionable.

Titans vs. Browns

Tennessee is averaging just 2.8 yards per carry in three preseason games. The longest run was from the backup punter on a fake punt. DE Jevon Kearse and David Stewart are doubtful. Out for the Titans are Ryan Mouton, Jason Jones, and Nate Washington.

Depending on the ebb and flow of the game, Titans backup QB Vince Young should get snaps with the first team offense, which will play through the first half. Third stringer Patrick Ramsey is questionable.

Titans head coach Jeff Fisher will work on the run game. Starting WR Nate Washington is out, meaning rookie Kenny Britt, their first-round pick gets the start. Britt missed a week of training camp and the opener, but has six receptions in Tennessee‘s last two games. Remember the Titans have an extra game under their belt, having played in the Hall-of-Fame game.

Starting LB Stephen Tulloch is expected to see his first action of the preseason. Perennial Pro C Kevin Mawae is again out, but should play next week.

Nobody on Cleveland has stepped up and won the starting receiving spot vacated by the suspension to Dante’ Stallworth.

Cleveland head coach Eric Mangini is not expected to name his starting QB until an hour before gametime, though it will likely be Brady Quinn says Bob Warner of Lines-Maker.com, one of the top NFL betting experts in America. Neither Quinn nor Derek Anderson has thrown a TD in preseason.

Top expert pick on this game: The first ever PERFECT PLAY in the history of NFLX goes Saturday and it’s on an over/under. Yes it’s the biggest NFLX release in sports gambling history.

A Perfect Play means an angle that is a 100 percent angle with a minimum of 12 games. However, not all 12-0 or better stats automatically qualify as a Perfect Play depending on counter information and the time period the perfect stat applies. NOTE THIS IS A NEW definition upon review.

The Great One is 11-1 the last 12 overall and 10-4 in NFLX so far. The full-season pass has more than paid for itself already for dime bettors with couple thousand dollars to spare. Get three NFLX, two are Level 5, plus a pro baseball Level 5. Click now to purchase

Bills vs. Steelers

Buffalo WR Terrell Owens is out. RB Fred Jackson is questionable. Jackson is supposed to be the starter while Marshawn Lynch serves a three-game suspension to start the regular season. Hence if he does not play, Buffalo will be very thin in the running game.

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger will play and his minor foot injury will not limit him in any way. Steelers starters will get their most extensive playing time, going about a half. Third string QB Dennis Dixon, who was pushing Charlie Batch for the backup job, is out, That leaves the Steelers with three QBs, the third being little used Mike Reilly, a Division II rookie.

For the Steelers RBs: Willie Parker is questionable, but either way Rashard Mendenhall, who missed almost all of last year, will get a lot of work. Mewelde Moore will get his first action of the preseason. Also questionable for the Super Bowl Champs WR Santonio Holmes, K Jeff Reed, and DT Steve McClendon.

Pittsburgh is 5-2 straight up lifetime in NFLX action to Buffalo, winning all three home games.

Chargers vs. Falcons

The Falcons will play most of their starters for the first half. Backup QB Chris Redman is expected to play most of the second half.

It’s a good chance for Atlanta to practice against a 3-4 defense as three of their first four regular season foes use that alignment.

San Diego RG Kynan Forney made no bones that he is fired up to face a Falcon team that cut him after he started 88 games for them. He is in a dual with rookie Louis Vasquez for the starting nod.

Saints vs. Raiders

Oakland WR Javon Walker is back practicing. He is much needed for a very inexperienced receiving corps. Chaz Schilens was developing as the go-to receiver but will miss the first four weeks of the regular season with an injury.

The Saints RB rotation: Mike Bell and Lynell Hamilton in the first half and P.J. Hill and Herb Donaldson in the second half. New Orleans Reggie Bush is questionable. DB Darren Sharper will probably be held out.

Oakland‘s passing game has made strides in training camp. Oakland‘s starters will play the entire first half and possibly into the third quarter. Jeff Garcia will come in after JaMarcus Russell.

Top expert pick on this game: In addition to the Preseason NFL Game of the Year, the best handicapper in America, GodsTips has a Wise Guy on this game. It’s now 12-6 with NFL picks including 4-1 in the ever important third week of preseason. The top handicapper in the land has the NFL Game of the Year going for day action among five NFL winners.

GodsTips has an additional Wise Guy in the NFL. So far, there have been four Wise Guys in the NFL. Three have won. Two more go today including the Preseason Game of the Year, which is 16-5-1 the last 22 going back to our scorephone days. MLB Wise Guy underdog has been added. Click now to purchase

Seahawks vs. Chiefs

Seattle is now minus three offensive line starters: C Chris Spencer, nine-time Pro Bowler Walter Jones is out at LT and LG Mike Wahle was releases at the start of training camp when he failed a physical. This is extra important as QB Matt Hasselbeck is returning after missing nine games last year with an injured back.

The Seahawks running game is in disarray. Veteran Edgerrin James was just signed Wednesday. Fellow veteran RB T.J. Duckett was cut to make room. Another vet Julius Jones has missed significant practice time.

Kansas City traded a draft pick to get two much needed offensive linemen from Miami: Andy Alleman, and Ikechuku Ndukwe. Both are expected to play Saturday and battle for wide open spots at RG and RT. KC’s offensive line starters struggled greatly against Minnesota.

Ndukwe started 15 games last year, while Alleman played in 15 games and started in the playoffs.

Cowboys WR Roy Williams is questionable.
