Pick Nation: World Champion Handicapper Betting on Stanford vs. Arizona

Sensational sports handicapper Matt Rivers has a free pick for the weekend. It’s Stanford (plus 5 ½) at Arizona at BetUs. Here is what he says:

How did Stanford play as pathetic as they did in the first half at Oregon State on Saturday? I don’t know and I never will know. All I can say is that will happen to every team every season in at least a half. The Cardinal were throughly embarassed in the first 30 minutes trailing 31-7 at the break and the game was over at that point. Jim Harbaugh’s squad though did show some character and heart in rallying back for only the 10 point loss, 38-28.

I am going to throw that last game out because Stanford is a better team than they showed and Harbaugh will certainly have his players attention and have them focused today. The Cardinal can definitely rise up and win today in Arizona making me just fine with grabbing a full handful of points. Toby Gerhart is an absolute beast running the rock and I really like young Andrew Luck.

It is not going to be easy for the 4-2 Cardinal as going on the road in-conference against Mike Stoopes quality Wildcats shouldn’t be but Arizona does not overly scare me as they have been alright this season but nothing more.

The ‘Cats are back home after three straight roadies in which they lost two of those. This has been a difficult stretch where they went to Iowa, Oregon State and Washington and now just may be a little fatigued from this rough past month. Plus they completely wet the bed late blowing that 12 point lead with around four minutes to play at Huskie Stadium. Sure Stoops’ squad could be focused and rally from that rough beat but they also could be a little depressed and somewhat pack it in ala Cal a few weeks back against USC after getting drubbed by Oregon.

Stud tight end Rob Grankowski is done for the season and this Arizona team is minus a lot of last season’s pieces including talented quarterback Willie Tuitama. They now have a sophomore quarterback in Nick Foles calling the signals and the guy has put up impressive numbers for sure since being deemed the starter a few games ago. Foles is complimented by a solid running game with Antolin and Grigsby in the backfield but all in all this is a fairly even game and after getting blasted last week Gerhart and Stanford are too good to not rebound with a vengeance.

Falcons will make a few more big plays in win over Bears

Two very evenly matched teams meet in the sportsbook when the Chicago Bears (3-1) visit the Atlanta Falcons (3-1). Atlanta crushed San Francisco 45-10 last week while the Bears are coming off a bye. They’re two weeks removed from a 48-24 win over Detroit.

Chicago Bears at Atlanta Falcons

Sunday, October 18 at 8:20 p.m. ET

NFL odds: Atlanta -3

The Falcons obviously got some issues sorted out during their bye since they looked fantastic against the Niners last weekend. The 45-10 demolishing showcased a balanced, attacking offense; Michael Turner rolled up 97 yards and three touchdowns before being pulled while Roddy White hauled in eight passes for 210 yards and two scores. Matt Ryan, who looked a little shaky against the Patriots a few weeks ago, bounced back with 329 yards and two touchdown passes. The second-year pro also avoided taking a single sack on the day.

Atlanta’s defense was very active, racking up three sacks, six hits on the quarterback and three takeaways. The run defense, however, remains a serious concern. The Falcons are allowing nearly 130 yards per game on the ground, not to mention a troublesome 4.9 yards per carry. All of it is coming in small gashes, as Atlanta has allowed just two runs of 20 yards or more.

That’s something the Bears, coming off a bye, will likely try taking advantage of. Running back Matt Forte, who struggled during the first few weeks, blew up against the Lions, carrying 12 times for 121 yards and a touchdown. Forte will be assisted by Jay Cutler, who has quelled much of the panic in the Chicago area after his disastrous debut against Green Bay. Since that four-interception debacle Cutler has tossed seven touchdowns and just one pick.

Defensively, the Bears have been solid if unspectacular; they’re allowing 19.5 points per game and taking care of business with an excellent pass rush. Two weeks ago, against Detroit, the Bears racked up five sacks and two takeaways. Sports betting software shows the rush defense has been especially good, holding opponents to just 93 yards per game.

Atlanta looks like a well-oiled machine after the impressive win over San Francisco but Chicago has a chance to do the same after resting in Week 5. These teams feel very evenly matched but, so far, the Falcons offense has proven more explosive (and the defense hasn’t allowed many long runs either). In a close game big plays often decide the victor; in this case, that should be Atlanta. Bet on the Falcons with your sports picks.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The lone college football game on the Wednesday schedule has unbeaten No. 5 Boise State on the road against Tulsa. The Broncos (5-0 straight-up, 4-1 against-the-spread) took out cupcake opponent California-Davis last time out, winning 34-16 on the strength of three Kellen Moore TD passes. The Golden Hurricane (4-1 SU, 3-1 ATS) knocked off Rice 27-10 in their last contest. The oddsmakers prefer ranked Boise State in this contest, as they’re listed as 10-point road faves.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

There are five games on the National Hockey League’s schedule for Wednesday, including Minnesota at Anaheim. The Wild dropped to 1-3-0 on the season last time out with a 4-2 loss to the Sharks. Andrew Brunette and Owen Nolan had the Minnesota goals in that game, while Niklas Backstrom made 25 saves. The Ducks are 2-2-1 on the season after getting blanked 3-0 by the Rangers on Sunday. Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 35 of 37 New York shots in that defeat.

Also on the ice on Wednesday: Pittsburgh at Carolina, Los Angeles at the Rangers, Edmonton at Chicago, and Nashville at Dallas. The Stars fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Canucks in their last game, getting goals from Mike Ribeiro, Jamie Benn, and Brad Richards in regulation time.
