Florida State vs. Oklahoma

Sooner starting DE Jake Trotter is probable after missing the Utah State game with an injury. Star DT Adrian Taylor did play against Utah State, but was limited with an ankle injury. It continues to progress and he will likely be close to 100 percent for the Seminoles contest.

Iowa State vs. Iowa

The Hawkeyes will have depth at RB. Jewel Hampton returns from a one-game suspension after missing all of 2009 with an ACL tear. However, he will battle Adam Robinson for playing time after Robinson rushed for 104 yards against Eastern Illinois.

Georgia vs. South Carolina

Gamecocks head man Steve Spurrier hinted that CB Chris Culliver will play. He missed the opener because of an NCAA investigation. Most observers believe the Bulldogs will get WR A.J. Green back, also a victim of Big Brother NCAA.

Rutgers vs. Florida International

The Scarlet Knights may install a no-huddle offense to spark their offense. QB Tom Savage has played his best in two-minute drills.

Michigan vs. Notre Dame

Lines-Maker.com’s Bob Warner reports that Denard Robinson will start at QB for the Wolverines. Former starter Tate Forcier may transfer.

Penn State vs. Alabama

Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram is doubtful at RB for the Crimson Tide. Trent Richardson will get the start with Eddie Lacy the backup.

Georgia Tech vs. Kansas

Kansas is off a humiliating loss to North Dakota State in which they scored just three points. Major changes are expected at the skilled positions as they may use true freshman at RB after their top two guys rushed for a combined 32 yards on 17 carries.

Florida Atlantic vs. Michigan State

With such a large point spread, keep a close eye on the status of MSU RB Larry Caper. He missed last week’s game to Western Michigan but true freshman Le’Veon Bell rushed for 141 yards and two scores as a fill-in.

Oregon vs. Tennessee

Brian Kayma of ScoresOddsPicks.com says that the Vols will be without their top WR Gerald Jones and probably without No. 2 Denarius Moore. Likely starting will be freshmen Justin Hunter and Da’Rick Rogers who were non-entities to Tennessee-Martin Saturday.

The Ducks will be going with unproven sophomore QB Darron Thomas and the incredible noise of 102,445-seat Neyland Stadium.

Wyoming vs. Texas

Wyoming is dealing with the loss of freshman LB Ruben Narcisse, who was killed in a car accident Monday morning.

UNLV vs. Utah

Utah starting QB Jordan Wynn is probable with a sprained thumb.

Jennifer Grey and Brandy are the favorites on the Dancing with the Stars 2010 odds. Bristol Palin is the long shot.

This is an uphill battle for sure as CC Sabathia and the Yankees are clearly heads and shoulders better than Jake Arrieta and the Orioles but to get about $3 or so back with the much improved fighting Showalters is definitely worth a shot.

Sabathia has been great as always and the Bombers are probably the best team in baseball. Of course many more times than not they win this game but Baltimore is playing solid ball and after taking game one in the Bronx yesterday I don’t see today being an impossibility at all. It’s unlikely sure, but impossible, heck no.

Ever since Buck Showalter came into the mix the O’s have been a good team. The offense has weapons led by Roberts, Scott, Markakis, Wieters and Jones and Arrieta has been serviceable enough to take a stab with here. Arod and the Pinstripers scare the bejeesus out of me all the time and could put up a crooked number in any inning but the number is extremely high and frankly too high for this one random 9 inning baseball game.

We probably will fall short today but at this price I’m willing to make a small play on the much improved boys from Camden Yards.

College football’s most anticipated game of opening week is about here as No. 3 Boise State and No. 10 Virginia Tech face off at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., in their first-ever meeting. This line has gone bonkers on Bodog’s NCAA football odds as Boise State opened as a 2.5-point favorite but now the Hokies are 1-point favorites.

Fair or not, both teams can probably kiss a national title shot goodbye with a loss. The Broncos have never opened a season ranked so high, but their weak schedule the rest of the way will likely preclude them from a spot in the BCS National Championship Game if they fall tonight. Boise State brought back a whopping 20 of 22 starters, led by Heisman contender QB Kellen Moore, from last season’s 14-0 team that beat TCU in the Fiesta Bowl. If Moore has a big game, he quickly jumps to the front of the Heisman discussion along with Ohio State’s Terrelle Pryor. The Broncos are 10-3-1 on the road the last two seasons ATS and 7-1 ATS in their past eight non-conference games.

Virginia Tech has arguably the best tailback tandem in the country in Ryan Williams and Darren Evans, but they have yet to play a down together. Two years ago, Evans rushed for an ACC freshman-record 1,265 yards and 11 touchdowns and was named Orange Bowl MVP. But he tore his ACL a few weeks before the start of last season, so the Hokies turned to Williams, who rushed for 1,655 yards — the sixth-highest total by a freshman in NCAA history — and 21 scores to become the first newcomer in ACC history to lead the conference in both rushing and scoring. The Hokies also bring back the ACC’s top-rated passer from a year ago in Tyrod Taylor, but the defense lost nine starters from 2009. Virginia Tech has a stunningly bad record in its history against AP Top 5 teams, going 1-25. The Hokies also have lost their past two season openers.

Oddsmakers have Navy set as the 6.5-point favorite in that first matchup, with the total at 48.5. Boise State is then a slim 1.5-point favorite, with the total for that contest at 50.5.

The Argonauts (5-3 SU, 5-3 ATS) and Tiger-Cats (4-4 SU, 4-4 ATS) will be playing for the second straight game; Hamilton won 16-12 on the road in Week 8, and they’re a 4-point home favorite for Monday (with the total at 50). The Eskimos (2-6 SU, 3-5 ATS) are big 12.5-point underdogs against the rival Stampeders (7-1 SU, 6-2 ATS), with that game’s total at 54.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League baseball betting schedule for Monday it’s Baltimore at the Yankees, the White Sox at Detroit, Texas at Toronto, Kansas City at Minnesota, Seattle at Oakland, Cleveland at the Angels, and Tampa Bay at Boston. The Rays will go with Jeff Niemann (10-5, 3.97 ERA) in that last matchup, while the Red Sox counter with Jon Lester (15-8, 3.27 ERA). Righthander Niemann has been knocked around in each of his last two starts, giving up a combined 17 runs on 15 hits over 8 1-3 innings of work against the Blue Jays and Angels. Lefthander Lester is coming off a win over the Orioles (five runs in six innings), and he beat the Rays on August 27 (one unearned run in seven innings).

Over in the National League on Monday there’s a doubleheader between the Marlins and Phillies in Philadelphia, along with the Mets at Washington, Atlanta at Pittsburgh, St. Louis at Milwaukee, Houston at the Cubs, San Francisco at Arizona, the Dodgers at San Diego, and Cincinnati at Colorado. Aaron Harang (6-7, 4.92 ERA) is slated to take on Ubaldo Jimenez (17-6, 2.69 ERA) in that Reds/Rockies matchup. Righthander Harang took a no-decision against the Brewers last time out, giving up three runs (one earned) on eight hits over just four innings. Righthander Jimenez is coming off a hard-luck loss to the Giants in which he gave up two runs over eight innings while fanning 10.

I backed Edwin Jackson against his former team in Comerica about a month ago and it worked like a charm so I’ll go back to the well today. Jackson has a very high upside as we saw in the no-hitter earlier in the season and will be motivated once again to try and shove it up his former team’s butts. The former Tiger does lose his control point at times and can implode but the boys from MoTown are extremely mediocre these days and not really all that scary. I’m not saying that I expect Chicago to catch the Twins in the division but E Jax should be just fine and with Manny in town Ozzie’s club is at least somewhat confident and going for it. The comeback win yesterday in Fenway was a great shot in the arm for the team and certainly should bring about some confidence.

Max Scherzer can be very good and I like the guy a lot. When getting some coin I have no problem backing the former Diamondback righthander at all but Jackson can be just as good today and all in all the White Sox are the better overall club with the better record. Konerko, Quentin, Pierzynski and now Manny form a club that can bash the ball around the park and are the better offense when compared to the Tigers. Besides Miguel Cabrera Detroit is very eh as guys like Inge and Damon and Jackson are solid enough but not exactly feared boppers.

I expect both pitchers to look good and hold their own and in the end the overall superior squad that has the greater need today should be the visitors from the south side. I have gone against these Sox my fair share this season because at times they are well overvalued but that’s not the case here as they are better than Jim Leyland’s club and should prove it one more time.
