News and notes

SportingNews

The Panthers looked to be markedly improved from last
season’s team that went 5-6 when they easily handled Virginia
38-13 in their opener Saturday. They mixed the run and pass better than they
did last season, and their defense looked faster and more athletic. That’s the
next challenge for these Panthers (1-0) — win away from Pittsburgh.
Last year’s team went 0-5 on the road, including losses by a combined 54 points
to Louisville and West
Virginia
in their final two road games. Pitt hasn’t
won on the road since beating South Florida and Notre
Dame in its final two road games in 2004, Walt Harris’ last season as the
Panthers’ coach. Among last season’s losses were a 16-10 overtime defeat at Ohio
U.—also on a Friday night during the second weekend of the season—and a 7-6
loss to Nebraska. The Panthers
didn’t have much trouble in handling Cincinnati
last season, winning 38-20. The Bearcats, 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the Big East
last season, beat Eastern Kentucky 31-0 in their opener
last weekend.

OffshoreInsiders.com

Cy McCormick of MasterLockLine.com is reporting that Bearcat
head coach for the first time in his coaching career is appealing to the fans
for a huge turnout on national television.
So far the fans appear to be rallying around the appeal and a boisterous
crowd is expected.

CFB

BOISE -7.5 Oregon
State

Our official outlaw line is Boise
-10.  True 2.5 points is not in and of itself huge, but it is off a key number. There is of course
plenty of room for Boise to win
outright and not cover, but it’s hard not to like a single digit favorite that
has won 47-of-49 SU at home.  They also
want to make a statement against the Pac 10, which they will do here.

New head coach Chris Peterson would also like to make a
statement in his first big game. “If we can knock one or two of those teams off
it would say something about the conference,” Petersen said.

Boise wins by
our projected number of 10.

MLB

Pittsburgh-Cubs UNDER 8.5

All of a sudden Rich Hill has gotten himself into a groove
giving up 2 ER, no unearned in his last 15 IP.
Zach Duke is better than he’s shown, in part because he gets no run
support, he’s pitched less than what he’s capable. However in a very winnable
road game, we look for him to have a bit extra concentration, which he has
lacked this year.

Hill has very dichotomous splits.  His road ERA is 7.81 with a 1.63 WHIP, but at
home it’s 3.35 and 1.22.

Dolphins-Steelers

Tribune Review

Miami starting
QB Dante Culpepperhas 86 interceptions in 80 career
starts, including 12 in seven starts last season. Culpepper tore his anterior cruciate, medial collateral and posterior cruciate ligaments and faced a recovery time estimated at
12-to-18 months.

Culpepper was thankful he didn’t have to learn a new
system. Scott Linehan, his offensive coordinator for
several years in Minnesota, was
the Dolphins’ coordinator last season, and even though he left and was replaced
by Mike Mularkey, the terminology and philosophy
remain largely the same.  Are you a

Steelers.com

During this preseason, both the Dolphins and the Steelers
have utilized the no-huddle offense, and they have used it successfully. The
Steelers used it during a first quarter touchdown drive against the Minnesota
Vikings in the second game of the preseason. The Dolphins used it through the
entire first half of a preseason game against the Panthers in Carolina
during the third week of the preseason. On both occasions, the teams’
respective quarterbacks made the no-huddle work.  Bet now through Nine. Check
out the latest odds.

Sun Sentinel

The Dolphins held their first regular-season practice
Sunday preparing for the NFL’s top young quarterback, but ended the day
planning to face his veteran backup instead. Pittsburgh’s
Ben Roethlisberger underwent an emergency appendectomy Sunday, which gives
Charlie Batch the starting nod for Thursday night’s Dolphins-Steelers game at
Heinz Field. Roethlisberger has a 27-4 record since making his first NFL start
in a 13-3 victory over the Dolphins in September 2004. A Steelers backup the
past four seasons, the 31-year-old Batch guided Pittsburgh
to victories in two starts in 2005 when replacing the injured Roethlisberger
(knee). Batch’s previous starts came when he posted a 19-27 record with Detroit
from 1998 to 2001. That included an 0-9 mark in his
final season with the Lions. Batch completed 59.5 percent of his passes (22 of
37) for 217 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions during the
preseason. Bet now through the

Sporting News

The Miami
offense should look familiar to the Pittsburgh
defense Thursday night. After all, the Steelers used to go against a version of
it every day in practice. Sure, there are bound to be new plays and formations,
some different looks and, as always, a gadget play or two. But offensive
coordinators don’t throw out their entire playbooks when they go from one team
to another, so the Steelers are bound to see some familiar features in Mike Mularkey’s Dolphins offense. Mularkey
was the Buffalo Bills’ head coach for two years before being hired by coach Nick Saban as offensive
coordinator. Before that, he was a Steelers assistant for eight seasons, including
three as offensive coordinator from 2001-03.  Bet this game now through BetUs. Check out the

Oregon State-Boise

Corvallis Gazette Times

The transition from the Dan Hawkins and Chris Petersen
coaching eras at Boise State
has been a smooth one. It’s also been a successful one so far, judging by the
Broncos’ 45-0 rout of Sacramento State
on Aug. 31 in a season-opener that doubled as Petersen’s head-coaching debut. Petersen was widely acknowledged as the
designer of
Boise State’s explosive offense, which ranked among
the nation’s most productive during his time as its coordinator.
Boise State averaged 41.6 points a game from
2001-05, best in the country; it led the nation in scoring in 2002 and 2003 and
was second in 2004.

those 46 victories in the last 48 football games played on the Broncos’ blue

The Boise

television cameras. The openers last week for both Boise
and the Beavers, against NCAA Division I-AA opponents, were not tough games,
the Broncos bashing Sacramento State
45-0 and OSU drilling Eastern Washington
56-17. The Broncos have struggled against Pac-10 teams, with one win in 11
games. That win, however, was over Oregon
State
two years ago at Boise.
Sophomore cornerback Brandon Hughes continues to recover from a right knee
sprain, Riley said, but is not expected to play at Boise
State
. Hughes, who had nine pass
breakups and 41 tackles last season. For the last two
years, the team with the big, early jump finished last when Oregon
State
and Boise
State
played. In 2004, the Beavers
surged to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of touchdown passes from
Derek Anderson to Mike Hass. But the Broncos scored 34 straight points in the
second and third quarters to secure a 53-34 win at Boise.Last
season, at Corvallis, Boise State led 14-0 in the first quarter on touchdown
passes from Jared Zabransky to Drisan
James and Jerard Rabb, only
to fall 30-27 when OSU’s Alexis Serna kicked a
29-yard field with a minute left in the game.
