CBB

Cal Santa Barbara-Pacific

Press Notes

Pacific has won 13 of the last 16 games to climb into
first place in the Big West.  Pacific
defeated Cal State Northridge 79-51 on Feb. 22 and 70-66 on Feb. 25. Pacific
leads the all-time series with UC Santa Barbara
49-43, and have won five straight in the series. The
Tigers hold a 28-14 advantage in Stockton,
and have won the last three meetings in the Spanos Center.

Illinois State-Evansville

Press Notes

The Redbirds carry a 20-11 advantage in the series, but Evansville
has won five of the last eight meetings. The two teams have only met once in
the conference tournament, which resulted in an 81-77 Redbird victory in the
2001 tournament. With seven newcomers on the Redbird roster this season there
are only seven returnees with tournament experience. Through 27 games, the ‘Birds
have courted 11 different starting line-ups this season. The total more than
doubles that of last season, in which the ‘Birds had four different starting
combinations. Of the 14 players on the roster, 11 have earned starting
assignments and no combination has been used for more than seven games.

UCLA-California

Press Notes

UCLA’s 22-6 start (UCLA’s eight-game winning streak was
snapped by the home loss to California/its five game winning streak was stopped
by the road loss at No. 21 Washington-it was UCLA’s first road loss of the
season). UCLA has held five of its last 11 opponents under .400 and two under
.300. Only twice in the last nine games has an opponent shot better than .464.
Eight of those 11 opponents scored 60 points or less.  Halftime bettors: UCLA trailed both Oregon
schools at halftime (OSU 32-26 and UO 28-23), but came back with big second half rallies
(season high for a half 52 vs. OSU and second-highest
season high for a second half 47 vs. UO). Vs. Oregon,
the Bruins shot their best second-half FG% (.625,
15-24) of the season. After missing eight games with a left shoulder injury
(cartilage/he started the first 11 games before the injury), Cedric Bozeman has
returned to play in the last nine games and started the last eight contests.
With Bozeman in the lineup, the
Bruins are 17-3 (16-3 as a starter).

Memphis-UAB

Memphis Commercial Appeal

There are lots of reasons these third-ranked Tigers (26-2,
12-0 Conference USA)
are, at 10-0, the only undefeated road team in the nation heading into tonight’s
8:30 p.m. showdown with UAB (20-5, 10-2). From talent to depth to a favorable
schedule, the list is as long as their current 15-game winning streak. But the
main reason is confidence.

NBA

Cavaliers-Bulls

Northwest Herald

After a weekend when the Bulls lost two games in which
they had opportunities to pick up ground in the NBA’s playoff race, the team
said its chances of returning to the postseason depends on finding consistency.
On Friday night the Bulls lost a close physical battle to the conference-leading
Detroit Pistons. Then Saturday they slipped, 108-102, in Philadelphia,
a team the Bulls had thrashed by 33 points only nine days before at home.
Coming into the United Center
tonight will be the Minnesota Timberwolves, who sport
an identical 24-31 record to the Bulls. The Bulls will be seeing a newly
configured Minnesota team tonight
different from the squad they defeated, 99-93, in January. Later that month,
the T-Wolves traded Wally Szczerbiak to Boston,
among others, for guards Ricky Davis and Marcus Banks.

Mavericks-Spurs

Star-Telegram

In addition to the Western Conference lead being at stake
tonight, the Mavs-Spurs winner takes a 2-1 lead in
the four-game season series. The final meeting is April 7 in San
Antonio
. The Southwest Division title, and likely top
seed for the Western Conference playoffs, could be determined by the
head-to-head play. The Mavs (45-11) and Spurs (44-12)
have the top two records in the conference.
