Selection Sunday Sports Preview

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The ACC, Big Ten, and SEC hold their conference championships, and the Mavericks get a tough game in Los Angeles.

Selection Sunday…

According to Bob Warner of Lines-Maker.com Memphis has jumped up to a No. 1 seed for the 2009 NCAA Tournament. He also projects North Carolina, Pittsburgh, and Louisville. San Diego State is now considered to be out of the NCAA Tournament getting leapfrogged by St. Mary’s for the final at large spot, though if Mississippi State wins the SEC, the Gaels will be bumped.

The odds to win the 2009 Big Dance will likely be temporarily taken off the board depending on the matchups, though Brian Gould of ScoresOddsPicks.com says that North Carolina will be the favorites at virtually all sportsbooks.

The individual game odds for the 2009 NCAA Tournament will be posted under the betting odds at Offshore Insiders or the college basketball odds section of ScoresOddsPicks.com.

Rounding out the Sunday slate: Minnesota at St. Louis, San Jose at Anaheim, Colorado at Vancouver, and Detroit at Columbus. The Blue Jackets blasted the Red Wings when the two teams met on March 7, with Rick Nash scoring three times in an 8-2 road victory. R.J. Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Second-round action in Pool 1 of the World Baseball Classic is set to begin on Sunday at San Diego’s Petco Park, with Japan vs. Cuba and Mexico vs. Korea. The Koreans slipped past Japan 1-0 on Monday to win Pool A; the Japanese had blasted Korea 14-2 earlier in the first round. Cuba pounded Mexico 16-4 on Thursday to claim Pool B in Mexico City; that was their only meeting of Round 1. The second round of the tournament continues in San Diego and Miami through Thursday, with the semis and championship at Dodger Stadium next weekend.

The march toward Madness . . .

Some of the country’s top teams will finally hit the hardwood in college hoops’ conference tournaments on Friday night, including the big guns in the ACC. No. 1 North Carolina, No. 8 Wake Forest, No. 9 Duke, and No. 22 Florida State will also see their first postseason action at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, with matchups finalized late on Thursday evening and games tipping off all throughout Friday.

No. 7 Michigan State will also get back on the floor on Friday afternoon as they begin their Big Ten tournament, as will No. 24 Purdue. As well, LSU, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Auburn begin their trek through the SEC tournament at Tampa’s St. Pete Times Forum. Meanwhile, the Big 12, Big East, Conference USA, Mountain West, Pacific-10, and Atlantic-10 conferences will all stage their semi-finals on Friday, with each of those tournaments finishing off on Saturday.

Tipping off on the hardwood  . . .

The Celtics will play host to the Grizzlies in one of 11 games on the NBA’s schedule for Friday night. Boston guard Rajon Rondo (ankle) and forward Glen Davis (ankle) have already been ruled out for that matchup, as the team looks to shake off their 107-99 loss to Miami on Wednesday night. The Grizzlies are coming off a loss as well – they were pounded 104-79 by Minnesota Wednesday.

LeBron James and the Cavaliers will be looking to pick up an easy win in Sacramento on Friday night, while Dwight Howard and the Magic will be in Washington to take on the lowly Wizards. Rounding out the schedule: Houston at Charlotte, Detroit at Toronto, Chicago at Philadelphia, Indiana at Atlanta, New York at Minnesota, Dallas at Golden State, New Jersey at Portland, and New Orleans at Milwaukee. The Hornets beat Washington 109-98 Wednesday night.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League offers up just a pair of contests on a Friday night dominated by pro and college hoops. The first game features a couple of Central Division rivals, as the Blue Jackets travel to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks. Those teams have met just twice so far this season, with Chicago coming out on top both times – a 3-1 home win in December, and a 4-3 road win in November.

The late game is then a west-coast matchup between the Kings and Canucks in Vancouver. Those two clubs just met on the ice on Monday night, with Los Angeles pulling out a 3-2 victory at home. Jarret Stoll scored twice for the Kings in that game, while Jon Quick stopped 20 of 22 Vancouver shots. Alex Burrows and Taylor Pyatt provided markers for Vancouver in the losing cause on Monday.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The World Baseball Classic doesn’t begin its second-round games until Saturday afternoon, which means Friday’s diamond action is limited to the Grapefruit and Cactus leagues. The Yankees will take on the rival Red Sox in the top matchup on that slate, with New York still reeling from the news that third baseman Alex Rodriguez will be out until May after undergoing hip surgery. The Vegas oddsmakers still have New York at 11/4 to win the World Series this year, although that could drop if they struggle early. The BoSox are sitting at 15/2 odds.

Big East Betting, It’s All But Locked Up

In March Madness betting, there are many at-large bids still yet to be decided as conference tournament play rages on, but the Big East may have a clearer picture than any other conference. As many as seven teams probably have berths locked up, so seeding is the only thing really left to figure out.

Not only does the Big East have plenty of March Madness betting seeds locked up, it has some major contenders; UConn and Pittsburgh are among the top-three schools in the nation and their rivalry strengthens with every faceoff. Could one of them dethrone North Carolina in the Final Four? Villanova and Louisville can’t be forgotten either.

The most exciting story heading into Selection Sunday has to be Syracuse‘s unbelievable win over UConn in six overtimes at Madison Square Garden Thursday night. If Syracuse‘s bid for a high seed in March Madness betting was in doubt before that legendary clash, that may have changed. The Orangemen were already ranked 18th in the nation and showed they could beat a top-three team with their overtime thriller; do they not deserve at least a three seed?

The only team whose fate wasn’t quite decided in March Madness betting entering the Big East tournament was probably Providence. It got pummeled by Louisville in the first round of the tourney and, considering it went 2-8 against RPI top-50 foes and was repeatedly blown out by its ranked divisional peers on the road this season, Providence’s March Madness betting dream appears over for 2009.\
