2009 Wimbledon Odds Betting Preview

It’s a fantastic weekend for country club sports gambling. The US Open betting odds are already into full swing but now the marquee event of the Tennis Grand Slam is ready to commence.

Following the announcement that defending champion Rafael Nadal is out of this year’s tournament, the 2009 Wimbledon odds reacted. Legendary Roger Federer is now the overwhelming favorite at -150, making Tiger Woods opening odds of 3-2 at the US Open look like a long shot.

Andre Murray at +185 is given the best chance to unseat Federer at +185 according to BetUs. Oddsmakers don’t give the other contenders much of a chance as Novak Djokovic has the third shortest odds at +700.

The online casinos agree that one of the Williams sisters is likely to win. Serena is +275, a slight favorite ahead of sister Venus at +275. However, the betting odds do agree that the women’s bracket will be more competitive than the men’s.

Maria Sharapova at +600 and Dinara Safina at +700 are also given reasonable shots to win.  The NFL preseason spreads are still a month or so away but gamblers can enjoy strawberries, potatoes, bangers, cheddar cheese and gin in winning tennis bets.

MLB Betting – Rays Head To New York, But Not To Face The Yankees

US Open betting odds are the major play in the “Big Apple” right now, but there is also a very interesting baseball betting matchup to watch out for Queens. Tampa Bay is used to playing in New York as they’re in the same division as the Yankees, but they’ll get to see the other side when they head to Citi Field to meet the Mets, who are hoping for a return to form by their struggling ace.

Rays Mets odds – Saturday, June 19, 4:10 PM ET

James Shields (5-5, 3.52) will be making his 100th career start, and he’ll hope that it goes better than No.99, although he managed to escape with a no-decision. Shields gave up four runs for the second straight outing, along with nine hits over 6.1 innings of a 5-4 win over Washington. The 27-year-old righthander is an innings-eater, as he is sixth in the American League in that category, but he’s been hit hard in his last two starts, and he’s 1-3 with 4.15 ERA on the road, which may scare off some who are making sports picks. This will also be his first career start against the Mets.

Johan Santana (8-4, 3.29) has given up 14 runs in his last 10 innings of work, and his performance in a 15-0 loss to the Yankees was as bad as anyone has ever seen from “Johan The Great”. The 30-year-old southpaw was nailed for nine runs on nine hits in just three innings, and he’s allowed homers in his last six starts, including five in the last two. He could be itching to get back to Citi Field, where he is 5-1 with a 2.14 ERA this season, which should give him the edge according to betting software. He’s made seven starts and 11 overall appearances against the Rays, going 3-2 with a 2.79 ERA.

Baseball betting odds should back the Mets at home, and we’ll find out in this outing if Santana is hurt, because it’s difficult to believe that a dominant pitcher like the two-time Cy Young winner can just go downhill so quickly. Shields hasn’t been awful, but he hasn’t looked like the guy who had 14 wins in 2008. The Rays will be wrapping up a road trip, just coming from Colorado, while the Mets are returning to home. Look for that to give them a betting edge, and take the Mets’ MLB odds on Saturday afternoon.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Dodgers and Angels will open a three-game interleague set in Anaheim on Friday night, with Chad Billingsley (9-3, 2.72 ERA) taking on Joe Saunders (7-4, 3.66 ERA). Meanwhile, the Braves and Red Sox will use their imports at Fenway Park on Friday, with Atlanta‘s Kenshin Kawakami (3-6, 4.54 ERA) taking on Boston‘s Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-4, 7.55 ERA). Coming off a shutout over the Cardinals, Indians lefthander Cliff Lee (4-6, 2.88 ERA) will be looking to keep the scoreless streak alive on Friday when he takes on the Cubs at Wrigley Field. As well, the Rockies host the Pirates in the NL set.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The 2009 U.S. Open continues on Friday, with Thursday’s opening round halted by rain mid-morning. Tiger Woods was 1-over through six holes when the round was suspended. Phil Mickelson was among the golfers who had yet to get going.

Finally, the WNBA offers up a half-dozen matchups on Friday night, with Chicago at Connecticut, Indiana at Detroit, San Antonio at New York, Minnesota at Seattle, Los Angeles at Phoenix, and Washington at Atlanta. The Mystics are the WNBA’s last remaining unbeaten team, as they sit at 3-0 straight-up and 2-0-1 against-the-spread. The Liberty (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS) are the only team with no wins.

Sympathies go out to the family of Philadelphia sportscaster Gary Papa who died after a battle with cancer.

Oh no, all the entertainment and political betting odds have been screwed with the Jon & Kate spoiler announcement that they spent their 10th anniversary apart.
