Barclays Betting – Tiger Roars At Barclays

This week’s Barclays betting odds are backing the world’s No.1 player to win the only one of the four FedEx Cup events he hasn’t won yet, but he’ll face some competition from two former rivals, a young gun, and a three-time major winner who is getting back to his best.

Barclays Betting – Thursday, August 27

Tiger Woods (+185) missed the cut at the British Open, then won two straight before fading in the PGA Championship, which may have stung more than the MC at Turnberry. Tiger famously skipped this event in ’07 and still went on to hoist the FedEx Cup, but he’s never played at Liberty National, which is holding a PGA event for the first time.

Phil Mickelson (+1850) is no stranger to Liberty National, as he is one of its most famous members. This hopefully points to a Tiger/Mickelson Sunday duel something like the final round of the 2007 Deutsche Bank Championship, and this year’s Masters shootout. Mickelson needs the familiarity of Liberty National as he hasn’t broken the top 50 in two events since coming back after dealing with personal problems.

Padraig Harrington (+2050) has rattled off two top-10s in a row after a miserable season, and he may have won those events if not for one bad hole. Harrington’s swing changes are coming around, and one more solid showing will get some betting management players on his side.

Hunter Mahan (+2250) has been one of the most consistent players this season, and although he doesn’t have a win, he has four top-10s in his last six starts, and he’s missed the cut only once in 20 events. Mahan is in the top 10 in terms of birdies and total driving, and if the putting can be consistent, he could be a FedEx Cup betting darkhorse to win the whole thing.

Steve Stricker (+3050) won this event in 2007, and finished T-19 last year. In eight FedEx Cup events, he’s cracked the top 20 seven times. He’s second in scoring average to only Woods (and two spots in front of Mahan), and the only knock on him is that he’s coming off a missed-cut in the PGA Championship.

Since Mickelson knows the course better than anyone in the field, most will go with “Lefty”. But I’m picking an angry Tiger Woods, as he’s been quiet since losing the Sunday lead at Hazeltime for the first time in a major, and we all know what he did after missing the cut at Turnberry. Take Tiger Woods in this week’s sports picks.

MLB Betting – Giants To Earn Split With Rockies

As the NFL odds start to take over the attention in the online betting world, there are some great baseball races that are going to go down to the wire in September. One of those races will be the Nationl League Wild Card, which features two NL West teams that are neck-in-neck.

The Colorado Rockies had a two-game lead on the Giants in the Wild Card race entering the weekend but after winning two of the first three games, the Rockies lead has expanded to two games. If the Giants can win tonight, the lead will be back to where it started on Friday.

Surprisingly, the Rockies and Giants have both caught up to Los Angeles Dodgers, who at one point had an insurmountable lead. The Rockies are just 3.5 games back while the Giants are 6.5.

San Francisco Giants @ Colorado Rockies

Barry Zito vs Jason Marquis

Some people might not believe that Jason Marquis not only has 14 wins on the season but is tied for the National League league in that category. While Marquis will attempt to become the NL’s first 15-game winner, he’s had two very different results against the Giants this season.

Baseball sports betting handicappers should note that in his first start, he earned a complete game victory back on May 2nd but on May 7th, he gave up seven runs in just six innings of work. Marquis has actually pitched better on the road this year than at home and the main reason has been his WHIP. At home, it’s at 1.42 but on the road, that number drops to 1.17.

Marquis will take on Zito, who may be one of the most overpaid players in sports but at least he’s been pitching somewhat to standard recently. The Giants have won five of his last seven starts, mostly in part to his solid pitching. Zito has given up just 11 earned runs in his last 42 innings pitched (2.36 ERA) while striking out 34 batters and walking just 12.

In his only start against the Rockies this year, Zito pitched seven shutout innings while allowing just three baserunners.

Although the Rockies are at home, the Giants need the win a little more just to keep pace. Behind Zito, look for them to get the job done.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Jeff Niemann (11-5, 3.71 ERA) will take on Roy Halladay (13-6, 2.78 ERA) as the Rays meet the Blue Jays in Toronto on Monday night. Righthander Niemann lost to Toronto back on July 26, but he’s coming off a strong outing against the Orioles (one run over his 7 1-3 innings). Righthander Halladay was beaten by Boston in his last trip to the mound, surrendering four earned runs in five innings of work. Halladay picked up a victory over Tampa Bay in his outing of August 14.

Also on the American League schedule for Monday: the White Sox at Boston, Cleveland at Kansas City, Baltimore at Minnesota, Oakland at Seattle, and Detroit at the Angels. The Tigers will go with Justin Verlander (13-7, 3.29 ERA) in that matchup; righthander Verlander has been tagged with the loss in two of his past three starts. The Angels counter with Jered Weaver (13-4, 3.89 ERA), who is coming off a stellar outing against the Tribe – nine shutout innings in a victory. There are more sports picks for tonight at OffshoreInsiders.com

Meanwhile, there are just three games on the NL schedule for Monday, with Milwaukee at Washington, San Francisco at Colorado, and Philadelphia at the Mets. The Phillies will go with Cliff Lee (4-0, 0.82 ERA in the NL) on Monday; the lefthander has allowed just three earned runs over 33 innings since being traded to Philadelphia. The Mets will hand the ball to Bobby Parnell (3-5, 4.74 ERA), who was knocked around for nine runs over three innings by Atlanta last week.
