However, facing a Buffalo “D” that game planned to disrupt Brees, New Orleans prevailed with a powerful running game. The Saints rolled up 222 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, led by Pierre Thomas’ 14 carries for 126 yards. The newfound balance makes this unit even more imposing.

New Orleans has been slowed by a weak defense over the past few seasons, but it came through against Buffalo this weekend. The team allowed just seven points, which came on a fake field goal. The pass rush opened up against Buffalo, with four sacks and an incredible 14 hits on the quarterback. Obviously, Buffalo isn’t an offensive juggernaut, but we’re betting management will take any progress it can get from the Saints defense.

The Jets, on the other hand, are making their money on defense. A week after Titans running back Chris Johnson racked up 284 yards and three touchdowns on just 23 touches against Houston, New York held him to 105 total yards on 23 touches while keeping him out of the end zone. Betting fans can make a very legitimate case that, right now, New York employs the best defense in the NFL; the Jets are allowing just 11.0 points per game.

Quarterback Mark Sanchez continued his solid play in last week’s win over Tennessee. He hasn’t been asked to win a game for New York—he just needs to stay within the offense, minimize mistakes and occasionally come up with a big play. Running backs Thomas Jones and Leon Washington do most of the heavy lifting; the Jets are 10^th in the NFL at 130 rushing yards per game.

Heading into the raucous Superdome will be a tough challenge for the young, cocky Jets. While their defense is certain to slow New Orleans, they can’t shut it down, especially after the Saints proved they can pass and run the football. And considering New Orleans ratcheted up the pressure last week, young Sanchez might have a hard time adjusting to the situation. The Braves will be looking to keep their playoff hopes alive on Monday night when they open a home series against the Marlins. Jair Jurrjens (13-10, 2.70 ERA) will get the ball for Atlanta in that contest, while Anibal Sanchez (3-7, 4.01 ERA) is slated to start for Florida. Righthander Jurrjens has picked up the win in each of his last three starts, allowing just two earned runs over 22 innings of work. Righthander Sanchez blanked the Phillies over eight innings last time out.

Over in the American League the battle for the AL Central crown gets started on Monday night, with Minnesota at Detroit. The Twins send Nick Blackburn (11-11, 4.18 ERA) to the mound to open that crucial series, while the Tigers will turn to Rick Porcello (14-9, 4.14 ERA). Righthander Blackburn pitched seven scoreless innings against the White Sox last time out, allowing eight hits in the win. Righthander Porcello beat the Indians (one run over five innings) in his last start.

Also on the AL slate for Monday: the White Sox at Cleveland, Kansas City at the Yankees, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, Toronto at Boston, and Texas at the Angels. Meanwhile, there are just three other games on tap in the National League on Monday, with the Mets at Washington, the Dodgers at Pittsburgh, and Houston at Philadelphia. Cole Hamels (10-9, 4.11 ERA) will get the ball on Monday for East-leading Philly; lefthander Hamels is 2-0 with a no-decision in his last three starts.

Texas is 15-5 in the series. They’ve beaten Santana two straight getting 13 earned runs off of him in just 9 2/3 inning pitched. In fact, they have 17 hits in those 9 2/3 innings.

The Rangers are +15.5 units the last two years as underdogs of 125-175. Texas has won 7-of-8 Hunter starts on grass and they are 6-1 with Hunter after allowing five or more runs in their last game.
