NBA Free Pick

Matt Rivers was the winningest handicapper ever on a large network of handicapping sites before being promoted to The Show. His Friday night free pick is to go with Toronto -2.5 at Memphis at BetUs Sportsbook

Laying points on the road is never the key to the mint but in this spot I’ll back the superior boys from up North.

Maybe the Raptors are going to be a much better than expected squad this season? If the opening easy win over LeBron James and the Cavaliers is any indication than the answer to that question is a resounding yes. And if not it’s not like the Grizzlies are much of anything even if Allen Iverson is able to play tonight.

I’m not saying that
Memphis does not have any talent because they do. Guys like Marc Gasol, Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph and OJ Mayo are a nice beginning for this fairly awful franchise but they don’t match up in any way, shape or form to guys like Chris Bosh and Hedo Turkoglu and others are solid like like Andrea Bargnani and Jose Calderon who may be in the beginning of their bust out type seasons.

Toronto has a pretty high ceiling, no they are not like an Orlando or a Cleveland or anything like that but the Raptors may very well be the surprise team this season and once again, even if not, the Grizzlies are, well, the Grizzlies which we saw in the 22 point opening night loss at Detroit.

Yankees vs. Phillies World Series Game 3 Pick

The World Series odds are living up to their classic billing so far, with two major pitching duels and a win for both the Yankees and Phillies in the books so far. How will Game 3 shape up as the series shifts back to Philadelphia? Time to make some more baseball picks.

World Series – Game 3
New York Yankees @ Philadelphia Phillies

Saturday, October 31, 7:57 p.m. ET
Andy Pettitte (2-0, 2.37) vs Cole Hamels (1-1, 6.75)
Online betting odds: Yankees -123, Phillies +103

The Yankees travel to Citizens Bank Park for Game 3. Not only is it a band box, it houses what many people believe are the toughest fans in all of baseball. Yet the Yankees are favored to win Game 3. What gives? Part of the explanation relates to Andy Pettitte, who has a sparkling 2.37 ERA in the postseason so far. He was thought to be homer-prone this season but most of those struggles actually came at home. On the road this year, Pettitte allowed just six long balls in 94.2 innings. He went 8-4 with a 3.71 ERA and held opponents to a .230 batting average. It’s possible, then, that Pettitte will be at his best again come Game 3. Like a late-charging horse at the racebook, Pettitte is saving his best for last this season.

The Yankees probably feel confident sending a lefthanded pitcher to the mound too, as it totally neutralizes Ryan Howard. The hulking Phillies’ slugger hit just .207 against lefties this season. Even lefty killer Jayson Werth has been just ordinary against them in the playoffs. In fact, despite Chase Utley’s huge performance in Game 1 versus C.C. Sabathia, no Phillies player hits better than .250 against lefthanded pitching in the 2009 playoffs.

Considering the Cole Hamels has been nothing like his dominant self of a year ago—he hasn’t pitched into the sixth inning so far in these playoffs—the Yankees should take Game 3.

Pick: Yankees -123

USF vs. WVU Betting Spread Preview and NBA Handicapping Notes

Canadian bettors are winning their proline picks using the ultimate football betting gold sheet but it’s time to focus on tonight.

The college football betting weekend begins with West Virginia at South Florida. The college football odds has WVU laying 3 at USF with a total of 48.

West Virginia enters 6-1 straight up yet 2-4 against the spread.

In fact they are on a 4-0 straight up run but 1-4 against the spread proving the stupidity of the square player’s bets of simply picking the team that wins outright. South Florida is 5-2 straight up and 3-3 to the number.

West Virginia averages 5.1 yards per rush against teams normally allowing 4.2 and 8.0 passing yards per attempt to 7.3. Overall they get .6 more yards than their opponents normally allow.

On defense they allow 2.8 yards per rush to teams normally getting 4.0 and 6.3 yards per pass to 6.6.

Revenge is on the minds of the Mountaineers as their last trip to Tampa ended West Virginia‘s hopes for a national title as the Bulls won 21-13 in 2007.

Against the spread records: WVU is 1-8 after a game with a turnover margin of +2 or better. They are 1-7 against teams with a winning record. USF is 3-11 against teams with a winning record.

Top expert pick on this game: From power of 620 sports services behind every selection, the MasterLockLine, Leo Getz is the premier Big East handicapper in football and basketball as well as the top A-10 hoop analyst. He’s 11th ranked of 620-plus handicappers in NCAAF this year (42 have turned a profit with at least 50 picks). Prime-Time Parlay of the Year West Virginia/South Florida. Click now to purchase

Headlines…

The betting news section has among other breaking news, why dithering Obama should overturn Prohibition II and decriminalize betting. The amount of revenue it would bring in taxes is staggering.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Phillies will go with veteran starter Pedro Martinez on Thursday night as they play on the road again against the Yankees in Game 2 of the World Series. Righthander Martinez has pitched just once so far in the playoffs, holding the Dodgers scoreless on two hits over seven innings of work in the NLCS (while fanning three) in a no-decision. The Yankees counter with righthander A.J. Burnett, who has three no-decisions and a 4.42 ERA through three playoff starts.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up just two games on Thursday night, with San Antonio at Chicago and Denver at Portland. The Trail Blazers will be looking to pick up a victory for the second straight contest, as they got past Houston 96-87 in their season opener on Tuesday night. Travis Outlaw poured in a team-high 23 points off the bench for the Trail Blazers against the Rockets, while Brandon Roy was good for 20 points and five assists. Greg Oden grabbed 12 rebounds in the win.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are seven games on the NHL’s schedule for Thursday, with New Jersey at Boston, Ottawa at Tampa Bay, Phoenix at St. Louis, Chicago at Nashville, Detroit at Edmonton, Vancouver at Los Angeles, and Washington at Atlanta. The Thrashers fell to 4-3-1 on the season last time out, losing 4-3 to the Sharks at home. Even worse, though, was that Atlanta lost star forward Ilya Kovalchuk to a broken foot; Kovalchuk is expected to be out three to five weeks.
