Much more than usual will be at stake when the rivals meet<br \/>\nFriday night at Kelly\/Shorts Stadium, including first place in the Mid-American<br \/>\nConference West Division and a spot in the Nov. 30 MAC Championship Game at<br \/>\nFord Field in Detroit. Central has won all five of its conference games this<br \/>\nseason and is 6-3 overall, making the Chippewas bowl-eligible for the second<br \/>\nconsecutive year. The Broncos (7-2, 5-1) also are bowl-eligible for the second<br \/>\nstraight season. Ryan Cubit has thrown for 1,449 yards and 11 touchdowns, but<br \/>\nhe may not be Central\u2019s biggest worry \u2014 that would be Western linebacker <span\nclass=SpellE>Ameer<\/span> <span class=SpellE>Ismail<\/span>, who leads the nation<br \/>\nin sacks with 15, one shy of the MAC single-season record. While Western has<br \/>\nthe league\u2019s top defense, Central has the conference\u2019s top scoring offense,<br \/>\naveraging 28.7 points and 385 yards per game.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal>Central\u2019s freshman quarterback, Dan <span class=SpellE>LeFevour<\/span>,<br \/>\nhas thrown a MAC-leading 17 touchdowns. But if there are any doubts about whether the<br \/>\nBlazers will be ready to play <span class=SpellE>UTEP<\/span> on Saturday in a<br \/>\nnationally-televised game from Legion Field, head coach Watson Brown erased<br \/>\nthem this week. \u201cWe are late in the year and both <span class=SpellE>UAB<\/span><br \/>\nand <span class=SpellE>UTEP<\/span> still have something to play for,\u201d said<br \/>\nBrown, who has been at <span class=SpellE>UAB<\/span> for 12 seasons. \u201cOur backs<br \/>\nare against the wall, and I have told the team that we are in a playoff system<br \/>\nright now. If we win, we still have a chance. If we lose, we are going to be<br \/>\nplaying the rest of the games for pride.\u201d Throw in the fact that the Blazers<br \/>\nare participating in their final home game of the season against the Miners,<br \/>\nand have a reputation for being an athletic, hard-hitting club, and <span\nclass=SpellE>UTEP<\/span> (4-5, 2-3 in league play) has quite the challenge if<br \/>\nit hopes to win out the remainder of the season and make an appearance in its<br \/>\nthird straight bowl game. Further, <span class=SpellE>UAB<\/span> has held a<br \/>\ntime of possession advantage in 7 of their 9 games this season\u2014something that<br \/>\nproved&nbsp;the difference last week in the Miners\u2019 loss to Rice. <span\nclass=GramE>Primarily a rushing team in the post-Hackney era, quarterbacks<br \/>\nChris Williams and Sam Hunt have<\/span> been efficient. Williams is 91 of 162<br \/>\non the season for 1,069 yards (118.8 per game), 8 touchdowns and 7<br \/>\ninterceptions. Hunt, who is expected to return from an injury this week and<br \/>\nsplit time with Williams, is 35 of 55 for 414 yards (82.8 yards a game), 2<br \/>\ntouchdowns and one pick. The Gauchos recorded wins over <span\nclass=SpellE>UC<\/span> San Diego (62-51) and <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Westmont<\/st1:PlaceName><br \/>\n<st1:PlaceType>College<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place> (76-68). <span\nclass=SpellE>UCSB<\/span> finished the 2005-06 <span class=GramE>season<\/span><br \/>\nwith an overall record of 15-14 and a Big West mark of 6-8. The Gauchos<br \/>\nfinished fifth-place in the league. <span class=SpellE>UCSB<\/span> won eight of<br \/>\nits final 11 games in 2005-06 to finish over the .500 mark for the fourth time<br \/>\nin five seasons. Friday\u2019s home game against <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>San Jose<\/st1:PlaceName><br \/>\n<st1:PlaceType>State<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place> will be the only <span\nclass=SpellE>Thunderdome<\/span> appearance that the Gauchos will make prior to<br \/>\nthe Thanksgiving holiday. Following the game against the Spartans, <span\nclass=SpellE>UCSB<\/span> will hit the road for contests at <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Montana<\/st1:PlaceName><br \/>\n<st1:PlaceType>State<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place> (Nov. 13), <span\nclass=SpellE>UNLV<\/span> (Nov. 17) and <span class=SpellE>Pepperdine<\/span><br \/>\n(Nov. 21). When the Gauchos return home they will have no small task as they<br \/>\nhost <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>San Diego<\/st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>State<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place>,<br \/>\nthe defending Mountain West Conference champion, on Saturday, Nov. 25. By the<br \/>\ntime November comes to and end, <span class=SpellE>UCSB<\/span> will have played<br \/>\nsix regular season games, the most ever for the month. <span class=SpellE>UCSB<\/span><br \/>\nenters the 2006-07 <span class=GramE>season<\/span> with a vastly different<br \/>\nroster than it finished the 2005-06 season. Gone are eight of the 13 players<br \/>\nfrom last season\u2019s team. In their place are two redshirt freshmen, a transfer<br \/>\nfrom a four-year school, two junior college transfers and four true freshmen.<br \/>\nIn fact, due to injuries, the Gauchos had only three <span class=GramE>returnees<\/span><br \/>\nplay in the two exhibition games. Of the 400 minutes logged by <span\nclass=SpellE>UCSB<\/span> players in the games against <span class=SpellE>UC<\/span><br \/>\nSan Diego and <st1:place>Westmont<\/st1:place>, 237 (59.2%) was racked-up by<br \/>\nnewcomers. <span class=SpellE>UCSB<\/span> went 9-4 in home games during the<br \/>\n2005-06 <span class=GramE>season<\/span>. The Gauchos were a perfect 6-0 in<br \/>\nnon-conference home games last season. Since Bob Williams became head coach in<br \/>\n1998-99, <st1:City><st1:place>Santa Barbara<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> has gone<br \/>\n73-30 in home games overall and 29-11 in non-conference home games. Since the<br \/>\n2000-01 <span class=GramE>season<\/span>, <span class=SpellE>UCSB<\/span> has<br \/>\ngone 21-5 in non-conference games at the <span class=SpellE>Thunderdome<\/span>.<br \/>\nThe Gauchos went 8-4 in home games in 2004-05, but in each of the three years<br \/>\nbefore that, they finished 10-2 in home games. But<br \/>\nafter four Sweet 16 appearances in eight seasons, the bar has been set. Nobody<br \/>\nreally believes Gonzaga is ever rebuilding. Truth is<span class=GramE>,<\/span><br \/>\nthey\u2019re undergoing the next thing to it. Take the loss of Morrison and Batista<br \/>\nand a non-league schedule that can only be termed frightful, and the <span\nclass=SpellE>Zags<\/span> appear to be in for a season in which some lumps are<br \/>\ncoming. The Pioneers will<br \/>\nbe without the services of a pair of players expected to contribute this<br \/>\nseason.
