But, one MRI and Monday night game later, that isn’t the case. More big names are down as we review the latest injuries to impact NFL betting.

Brett Favre, Vikings: ANKLE

We knew he had elbow tendinitis. We also knew he had a least a bit of a bum ankle. But, after he limped around during Minnesota’s loss to Green Bay on Sunday night, Brett Favre went for an MRI and got some worse news. His left ankle isn’t just sore; it has two different fractures in it. Vikings coach Brad Childress says it won’t require surgery but Favre’s consecutive games played streak is in serious jeopardy. However, since he wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire this season, I wouldn’t downgrade Minnesota’s sportsbook odds just yet. Tarvaris Jackson isn’t nearly as bad as everyone seems to think.

Tony Romo, Cowboys: CLAVICLE

The Cowboys were already on the ropes at 1-4 and it looks like their season is finished after they lost Tony Romo – and the game – last night. Romo took a big hit from Michael Boley and broke his clavicle. Early reports say he’ll miss at least six weeks and possibly the rest of the season. With respect to Jon Kitna, it looks like Dallas is done. It’s time to toss their NFL futures into the trash.

Alex Smith, 49ers: SHOULDER

The 49ers are yet another team that had high hopes for this season yet looks hopeless at the moment. Alex Smith wasn’t exactly the second coming of Joe Montana for the 49ers – he was average at best – but he was still better than David Carr. Now that Smith has what doctors are calling “a significant sprain” in his AC Joint, Carr could get the nod in Week 8. When he took over for Smith last week against Carolina, all he did was hand the game away with an interception in the dying minutes.

Max Hall, Raiders: CONCUSSION

We just couldn’t get through a week in the NFL without at least one concussion. Arizona rookie quarterback Max Hall was the latest casualty. He had a nightmarish Week 7, going 4 of 16 for 36 yards before leaving the game after a taking a head shot. Still, as poorly as Hall played, he still looks like a better option than Derek Anderson, so his injury hurts Arizona’s betting prospects. Hall will only start in Week 8 if he can practice on Wednesday.

DeAngelo Williams, Panthers: FOOT

The news on Williams’ foot is pretty vague. He was in noticeable pain when he left Sunday’s game but the whispers among Panthers brass say the injury isn’t serious. Still, selfishly, I wouldn’t mind seeing Williams sit out one game. I’d love to see what Jonathan Stewart could do in a full game as a starter, as he has potential to be an elite back if he ever gets a full-time job.

Russell Okung, Seahawks: ANKLE

Seattle’s blue-chip left tackle suffered an ankle injury reportedly similar to what he dealt with earlier this season. He’ll probably miss a game or two and Seattle’s offense will suffer as a result.

Eben Britton, Jaguars: SHOULDER

It looks like Britton, Jacksonville’s starting right tackle, is done for the year with a torn labrum. It’s a pretty damaging injury to an already-shaky Jags offense. If Maurice Jones-Drew was scuffling already, how much worse will he be without Britton paving lanes for him?

NBA betting begins tonight with LeBron James and the Miami Heat at Boston Celtics but it’s time for NFL injuries for fantasy football and Week 8 NFL odds.
