{"id":740,"date":"2006-08-12T11:12:49","date_gmt":"2006-08-12T16:12:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.joeduffy.net\/blog\/2006\/08\/fight-for-your-right-to-gamble\/"},"modified":"2006-08-12T11:12:49","modified_gmt":"2006-08-12T16:12:49","slug":"fight-for-your-right-to-gamble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.joeduffy.net\/blog\/2006\/08\/fight-for-your-right-to-gamble\/","title":{"rendered":"Fight For Your Right to Gamble"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Why Sportsbooks Would Flock to the <st1:country-region><st1:place>US<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><br \/>\nupon Decriminalization<\/h3>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>Joe Duffy (<a\nhref=\"http:\/\/p6.hostingprod.com\/@joeduffy.net\/\"><b><span style='font-size:9.5pt'>JoeDuffy.net<\/span><\/b><\/a>)<\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>As reported on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.casinobettingnews.com\/\"><b><span\nstyle='font-size:9.5pt'>CasinoBettingNews.com<\/span><\/b><\/a>, both CNBC and the<br \/>\nWall Street Journal conducted surveys that showed an overwhelming 9-of-10<br \/>\nAmericans favor fully legalizing online gambling. <\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>I\u2019ve pointed out if the <st1:country-region><st1:place>US<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><br \/>\ngovernment did something really extraordinary and listened to the will of the<br \/>\npeople; tax revenue from online casinos could be used to fund Social Security<br \/>\nor education.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  <\/span>Crazy ideas, I know. <span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>Even supporters of your right to choose to bet will point<br \/>\nout that online sportsbooks and online casinos could still set up shop outside<br \/>\nthe <st1:country-region><st1:place>US<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and<br \/>\ncircumvent taxation. <\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>At <a href=\"http:\/\/p6.hostingprod.com\/@joeduffy.net\/\"><b><span\nstyle='font-size:9.5pt'>JoeDuffy.net<\/span><\/b><\/a>, we believe there are at<br \/>\nleast two major forces that would make that unlikely: market forces and<br \/>\ngovernment protection. <\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>BetOnSports, the target de jour of the Department of<br \/>\nInjustice\u2019s crackdown on civil liberties, reports about 80 percent of their<br \/>\nsportsbook business came from the <st1:country-region><st1:place>United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><br \/>\nbefore the \u201c<span class=SpellE>Tobetaman<\/span> Square Massacre\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>American <span class=SpellE>pointspread<\/span> bettors<br \/>\nwould feel much more secure placing their online sports bets with a company<br \/>\nthat was regulated inside of their borders. \u201cEven those of us who do not have a<br \/>\ngreat deal of faith in our government, generally have a favorable view of the<br \/>\ncurrent land based casino control commissions\u201d said Stevie Vincent of <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.knockoutpicks.com\/\"><b><span style='font-size:9.5pt'>KnockoutPicks.com<\/span><\/b><\/a>.<br \/>\n<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'> <\/span>Cy McCormick of the online handicapping<br \/>\nsyndicate <span style='color:#666666'><a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.alliancehandicapping.com\/\"><b><span style='font-size:9.5pt'>AllianceHandicapping.com<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/span><br \/>\nadded, \u201cRegulation means credibility\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>What do we mean by \u201cgovernment protection\u201d? <span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'> <\/span>In this fantasy of Big Brother giving you the<br \/>\nright to choose to gamble online, certainly the \u201cno taxation without<br \/>\nrepresentation\u201d applies.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>Several years ago, online sportsbooks faced <span\nclass=SpellE>DoS<\/span> (Denial of Service) attacks from Russian mafia<br \/>\nhackers.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  <\/span>The hackers demanded \u201csecurity<br \/>\nprotection\u201d from the online casinos and for the most part got their ransom. <\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>Eventually, the extortionists were caught, but with no<br \/>\nhelp from the FBI. The hackers knew offshore books would get no relief from <st1:country-region><st1:place>United<br \/>\nStates<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> law enforcement. Once the <st1:country-region><st1:place>US<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><br \/>\ngovernment legitimized online gambling, American based companies would have the<br \/>\nsame law enforcement protection as <span class=SpellE>Ebay<\/span> or Amazon. <\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>Finally, American land based casino giants would<br \/>\naggressively pursue the online avenue once our government decriminalizes this<br \/>\nlegitimate activity.
