He said Ryan<br \/>\nMoats (knee) might be a week away from returning. Correll Buckhalter, trying to<br \/>\ncome back from three knee surgeries in 4 years, has seen only limited contact<br \/>\nwork in camp and probably isn\u2019t ready to play in a game. Right now, behind<br \/>\nBrian Westbrook, the Birds have Reno <span class=SpellE>Mahe<\/span> and<br \/>\nfullback Thomas <span class=SpellE>Tapeh<\/span>, who can move over in a pinch.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s not a comfortable situation.<\/p>\n<h2>Colts-Rams<\/h2>\n<h3><st1:City><st1:place>Indianapolis<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> Tribune Star<\/h3>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>\u201cIt\u2019ll be, I think, a good test for us. We have some<br \/>\ndefensive guys that aren\u2019t going to play. But that means the younger guys are<br \/>\ngoing to have to step up. But I\u2019m anxious to see them in those game<br \/>\nconditions,\u201d Colts Coach Tony Dungy said Monday. \u201cOur offense is pretty much<br \/>\nhitting at full strength. And I feel like we\u2019ve got a lot of stuff in and<br \/>\nrolling pretty good. Defensively we\u2019ll just have to see how the young guys do,<br \/>\nbut I think we\u2019ll be ready to play well.\u201d Dungy expects the first-team offense<br \/>\nto see limited action at the beginning of the game. The first-team defense may<br \/>\nget a little longer look, though. \u201cProbably about 15 plays,\u201d Dungy said of the<br \/>\namount of time he expects the Colts\u2019 first-team offense to be in the game.<br \/>\n\u201cDefensively, I\u2019m not sure how we\u2019ll go. We don\u2019t have a lot of substitutes, so<br \/>\nour guys are probably <span class=SpellE>gonna<\/span> go a little bit more.\u201d<br \/>\nDominic Rhodes will start the game at running back and is also expected to get<br \/>\nan extended look. Backup quarterback Jim <span class=SpellE>Sorgi<\/span>, who<br \/>\nhas been bothered by a sore right shoulder since late May, should be able to<br \/>\nplay against the Rams. <span class=SpellE>Sorgi<\/span> has been limited to just<br \/>\none practice per day by team medical personnel. He showed no ill-effects from<br \/>\nthe injury, however, in Saturday\u2019s controlled scrimmage and was able to go<br \/>\nthrough a full workout on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<h3>Indy Star<\/h3>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>Quarterback Peyton Manning and the No. 1 offense are<br \/>\nexpected to be on the field for approximately 15 plays against the Rams.<br \/>\nVeteran Dominic Rhodes likely will start at tailback, but rookie Joseph <span\nclass=SpellE>Addai<\/span> will shoulder a heavy workload with the No. 1 and No.<br \/>\n2 units. The defense probably will be short-handed. Coach Jim Mora said the 25-year-old<br \/>\nfree agent appeared to hurt an Achilles\u2019 tendon during the first of two<br \/>\nworkouts, the sort of injury that would likely end Wallace\u2019s long-shot bid to<br \/>\nmake the Falcons backfield. <st1:City><st1:place>Atlanta<\/st1:place><\/st1:City><br \/>\nalready lost Brian <span class=SpellE>Finneran<\/span>, their leading receiver<br \/>\nin 2005, to a season-ending knee injury. Now, the Falcons will be without<br \/>\nWallace when they play their first preseason game Friday night, hosting <st1:place>New<br \/>\nEngland<\/st1:place> at the Georgia Dome. QUARTERBACK ROTATION: Matt <span\nclass=SpellE>Schaub<\/span> will play most of the first half. Brian Randall and <span\nclass=SpellE>D.J<\/span>. Shockley will split time after halftime. And Michael<br \/>\nVick will barely play at all. <span class=GramE>Falcons<\/span> coach Jim Mora<br \/>\nsaid Vick will play only one or two series in the preseason opener against <st1:place>New<br \/>\nEngland<\/st1:place>. That\u2019s just fine with Vick, who broke his leg in a 2003<br \/>\npreseason game and missed a good part of the regular season. \u201cI\u2019m not really a<br \/>\nbig fan of the preseason,\u201d Vick said, grinning. <span class=SpellE>Schaub<\/span><br \/>\nwill play the rest of the first half, <span class=GramE>then<\/span> turn the<br \/>\nteam over to the two guys battling for the No. 3 spot in the quarterback<br \/>\nrotation. Wide receiver <span\nclass=SpellE>Muhsin<\/span> Muhammad and linebacker Hunter <span class=SpellE>Hillenmeyer<\/span><br \/>\non Monday joined the growing list of injured, although neither injury is<br \/>\nexpected to be serious. Running back remains the biggest worry, with results<br \/>\ndue today on the <span class=SpellE>MRI<\/span> Cedric Benson received for a<br \/>\nshoulder sprain he suffered in practice Friday. Meanwhile, the pulled hamstring<br \/>\nrunning back Thomas Jones suffered while taking a physical prior to the first<br \/>\npractice could finally be improving. Jones hasn\u2019t practiced yet and a return<br \/>\ndate remains uncertain, but finally at Monday\u2019s practice he did something on<br \/>\nthe sidelines besides stand. \u201cI can\u2019t say the second preseason (game) or when<br \/>\nhe will be back,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI just know that you probably saw him doing some<br \/>\nrunning earlier here today and that\u2019s a good sign. Besides the backfield, the<br \/>\nBears have been particularly hard hit at wide receiver and defensive tackle. At<br \/>\nreceiver, they were down to their third and fourth receivers Monday because of<br \/>\nMuhammad\u2019s absence and Bernard <span class=SpellE>Berrian<\/span> is still<br \/>\nnursing a hip flexor strain. <\/p>\n<h3>Contra Costa Times<o:p><\/o:p><\/h3>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>The 49ers plan to play at least three of their four<br \/>\nquarterbacks in Friday night\u2019s exhibition opener against Chicago, and backup<br \/>\nquarterback Trent <span class=SpellE>Dilfer<\/span> is the most likely candidate<br \/>\nto sit the game out. Nolan said Alex Smith would start and play at least a<br \/>\nquarter, possibly more. Joey Porter, a Pro Bowl<br \/>\nlinebacker, definitely won\u2019t play Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals. He\u2019s<br \/>\nyet to take part in a training camp practice because of a knee injury that needed<br \/>\noff-season surgery. Hines Ward, a Pro Bowl wide receiver and MVP of Super Bowl<br \/>\nXL, probably won\u2019t play either. On Monday, Ward missed his second straight day<br \/>\nof practice with a tender hamstring.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=SpellE>Verdein<\/span> Independent<\/h3>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>Now with healthy bodies reporting to training camp along<br \/>\nwith a couple new faces, including a new defensive line coach, the Cardinals<br \/>\nare looking better than ever and feeling energized for the new season. The only<br \/>\nsnag so far is the broken hand of King, who will sit out the next four to six<br \/>\nweeks while he recovers. The new defensive line coach is Larry Brooks, who<br \/>\nenters his 21<sup>st<\/sup> season as an NFL assistant coach and his first with<br \/>\nthe Cardinals. Brooks worked the past 12 seasons as a defensive line coach<br \/>\nincluding the previous two seasons with the Detroit Lions. The offensive line<br \/>\nwas really the Cardinals weak spot last year. This year\u2019s changes which include<br \/>\na new offensive line coach, the Cardinals are looking to up their performance<br \/>\nand protection of first-string quarterback Kurt Warner, who took a beating last<br \/>\nyear and ended up on the injured list. Steve <span class=SpellE>Loney<\/span><br \/>\ntakes over as offensive line coach for the Cardinals. The Cardinals still look<br \/>\nvery strong in their passing game with the return of Larry Fitzgerald and <span\nclass=SpellE>Anquan<\/span> <span class=SpellE>Boldin<\/span>, who are prepped to<br \/>\nhave another stellar season. Both wide-receivers caught over 100 passes last<br \/>\nyear for over 1400 yards apiece.
