The Eagles might have to add a running back before
\nThursday\u2019s preseason game at home against the Browns, Reid agreed. He said Ryan
\nMoats (knee) might be a week away from returning. Correll Buckhalter, trying to
\ncome back from three knee surgeries in 4 years, has seen only limited contact
\nwork in camp and probably isn\u2019t ready to play in a game. Right now, behind
\nBrian Westbrook, the Birds have Reno Mahe<\/span> and
\nfullback Thomas Tapeh<\/span>, who can move over in a pinch.
\nThat\u2019s not a comfortable situation.<\/p>\n

Colts-Rams<\/h2>\n

Indianapolis<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> Tribune Star<\/h3>\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll be, I think, a good test for us. We have some
\ndefensive guys that aren\u2019t going to play. But that means the younger guys are
\ngoing to have to step up. But I\u2019m anxious to see them in those game
\nconditions,\u201d Colts Coach Tony Dungy said Monday. \u201cOur offense is pretty much
\nhitting at full strength. And I feel like we\u2019ve got a lot of stuff in and
\nrolling pretty good. Defensively we\u2019ll just have to see how the young guys do,
\nbut I think we\u2019ll be ready to play well.\u201d Dungy expects the first-team offense
\nto see limited action at the beginning of the game. The first-team defense may
\nget a little longer look, though. \u201cProbably about 15 plays,\u201d Dungy said of the
\namount of time he expects the Colts\u2019 first-team offense to be in the game.
\n\u201cDefensively, I\u2019m not sure how we\u2019ll go. We don\u2019t have a lot of substitutes, so
\nour guys are probably gonna<\/span> go a little bit more.\u201d
\nDominic Rhodes will start the game at running back and is also expected to get
\nan extended look. Backup quarterback Jim Sorgi<\/span>, who
\nhas been bothered by a sore right shoulder since late May, should be able to
\nplay against the Rams. Sorgi<\/span> has been limited to just
\none practice per day by team medical personnel. He showed no ill-effects from
\nthe injury, however, in Saturday\u2019s controlled scrimmage and was able to go
\nthrough a full workout on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

Indy Star<\/h3>\n

Quarterback Peyton Manning and the No. 1 offense are
\nexpected to be on the field for approximately 15 plays against the Rams.
\nVeteran Dominic Rhodes likely will start at tailback, but rookie Joseph Addai<\/span> will shoulder a heavy workload with the No. 1 and No.
\n2 units. The defense probably will be short-handed. Among the players expected
\nto miss the game are safeties Bob Sanders (shoulder) and Mike Doss (calf) and
\ntackles Corey Simon (knee) and Montae<\/span> Reagor<\/span> (knee).<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Lions<\/span> running back depth: Even
\nthough he\u2019s healthy and slimmed down, running back Artose<\/span>
\nPinner<\/span> likely won\u2019t be in a Lions jersey when the
\nregular season begins. Pinner<\/span>, the Lions\u2019 fourth-round
\npick in 2003, faces an uphill climb in making the roster this season. Kevin
\nJones is the established starter. Arlen Harris played for offensive coordinator
\nMike Martz in St. Louis<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>. Rookie
\nBrian Calhoun has had a good camp, and it\u2019s highly unlikely the Lions would cut
\na third-round pick. Plus, Shawn Bryson, who will likely back
\nup starting fullback Cory Schlesinger, can play running back if needed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Patriots-Falcons<\/h2>\n

Macon<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> Telegraph<\/o:p><\/h3>\n

Tight end Alge<\/span> Crumpler<\/span> would be surprised if coach<\/span>
\nJim Mora told him to wear a uniform when the Atlanta Falcons open the preseason
\nagainst the New England Patriots on Friday night. Without Crumpler<\/span>,
\nDwayne Blakley<\/span> probably would take most of the snaps
\nwith the first-team offense. Blakley<\/span>, at 6-foot-4, is
\na visible target for quarterback Michael Vick, but starting skill players
\nrarely play more than the first two or three series in the first preseason
\ngame.<\/p>\n

Providence<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> Journal<\/h3>\n

Belichick said this week will be a mixed week in that the
\nteam will spend part of its time continuing work it needs to do for the regular
\nseason, but also mix in some preparation specifically for the preseason opener
\nat Atlanta<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> Friday. \u201cThe Atlanta<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>
\ngame is an interesting game for us because it will give us a look at a lot of
\nthings we haven\u2019t seen that much from ourselves,\u201d he said. The Falcons play
\none-gap defense, do a lot of zone blitzing, run the stretch play offensively,
\nhave a mobile quarterback and do a lot of bootlegs, none of which are featured
\nwith the Patriots.<\/p>\n

At the Bears\u2019 current rate of attrition, just fielding a

\nmight be a bigger challenge for them than playing the game. Wide receiver Muhsin<\/span> Muhammad and linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer<\/span>
\non Monday joined the growing list of injured, although neither injury is
\nexpected to be serious. Running back remains the biggest worry, with results
\ndue today on the MRI<\/span> Cedric Benson received for a
\nshoulder sprain he suffered in practice Friday. Meanwhile, the pulled hamstring
\nrunning back Thomas Jones suffered while taking a physical prior to the first
\npractice could finally be improving. Jones hasn\u2019t practiced yet and a return
\ndate remains uncertain, but finally at Monday\u2019s practice he did something on
\nthe sidelines besides stand. \u201cI can\u2019t say the second preseason (game) or when
\nhe will be back,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI just know that you probably saw him doing some
\nrunning earlier here today and that\u2019s a good sign. Besides the backfield, the
\nBears have been particularly hard hit at wide receiver and defensive tackle. At
\nreceiver, they were down to their third and fourth receivers Monday because of
\nMuhammad\u2019s absence and Bernard Berrian<\/span> is still
\nnursing a hip flexor strain. <\/p>\n

\nchances of playing in the preseason opener.<\/span> But it looks more and more
\nlike two other Pittsburgh Steelers stars won\u2019t play. Joey Porter, a Pro Bowl
\nlinebacker, definitely won\u2019t play Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals. He\u2019s
\nyet to take part in a training camp practice because of a knee injury that
\nneeded off-season surgery. Hines Ward, a Pro Bowl wide receiver and MVP of
\nSuper Bowl XL, probably won\u2019t play either. On Monday, Ward missed his second
\nstraight day of practice with a tender hamstring.<\/p>\n

Verdein<\/span> Independent<\/h3>\n

Now with healthy bodies reporting to training camp along
\nwith a couple new faces, including a new defensive line coach, the Cardinals
\nare looking better than ever and feeling energized for the new season. The only
\nsnag so far is the broken hand of King, who will sit out the next four to six
\nweeks while he recovers. The new defensive line coach is Larry Brooks, who
\nenters his 21st<\/sup> season as an NFL assistant coach and his first with
\nthe Cardinals. Brooks worked the past 12 seasons as a defensive line coach
\nincluding the previous two seasons with the Detroit Lions. The offensive line
\nwas really the Cardinals weak spot last year. This year\u2019s changes which include
\na new offensive line coach, the Cardinals are looking to up their performance
\nand protection of first-string quarterback Kurt Warner, who took a beating last
\nyear and ended up on the injured list. Steve Loney<\/span>
\ntakes over as offensive line coach for the Cardinals. The Cardinals still look
\nvery strong in their passing game with the return of Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan<\/span> Boldin<\/span>, who are prepped to
\nhave another stellar season. Both wide-receivers caught over 100 passes last
\nyear for over 1400 yards apiece. With the new addition of Loney<\/span>,
\nthe offensive line looks to be whipping into shape so that they can have more
\nof a running game, which is the goal of Cardinals\u2019 third-year head coach Dennis
\nGreen.<\/p>\n

Jaguars-Dolphins<\/h2>\n

Quarterback Daunte<\/span><\/strong><\/span> Culpepper<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>has progressed so well in his recovery

\nyesterday that his nagging hamstring injury likely will keep him out of the

Chiefs-Texans<\/h2>\n

When the Chiefs failed one of their first offensive tests
\nof training camp<\/st1:PlaceType> Tuesday<\/st1:PlaceName><\/st1:place>,
\ncoach Herm Edwards\u2014that famed defender of the defense\u2014wasn\u2019t happy about it. The
\nChiefs couldn\u2019t generate a first down when running the so-called four-minute
\noffense, a term for the mode used when a team is leading late in a game and
\nwants to control the ball and run out the clock. In what was an even bigger
\ncrime to Edwards, they stopped the clock by throwing an incomplete pass on
\nthird down. The situation was yet another sign of the transition the Chiefs
\nface as they move from the continual attack mode of the Dick Vermeil-Al Saunders
\nera to the conservative, ball-control philosophy favored by Edwards. The Chiefs
\nwere using mostly backups at the time. Green, Gonzalez, fullback Ronnie Cruz
\nand guards Will Shields and Brian Waters were either sitting out the morning
\npractice or injured. The series ended when Casey Printers threw a wild,
\nincomplete pass on third down and eight after
\ntwo<\/st1:time> unsuccessful running plays.That<\/span> the
\nChiefs used backups mattered little to Edwards.\u201dThe<\/span>
\nbackups will have to play Saturday,\u201d Edwards said, referring to the preseason
\nopener against the Texans in Houston<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>.
\n\u201cI\u2019m not going to change the game plan because they\u2019re going in there, and I\u2019m
