\nwinner Kent Desormeaux<\/span>, Big Brown has gone undefeated
\nas a three-year-old with three victories which includes an impressive win in
\nthe Florida Derby. However, if Big Brown does win he\u2019ll have to go against
\nhistory to do it. Big Brown was unlucky in the post draw and drew the outside
\nNo. 20 post. In the Derby<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>\u2019s lengthy
\nhistory, only one horse has won out of the No. 20 post in 15 attempts. That
\nlone winner was Clyde Van Dusen<\/span> way back in 1929.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Big Brown\u2019s bad luck in the post draw could provide an opening for Colonel
\nJohn or Pyro<\/span> to pull off an upset. Colonel John
\nfollows Big Brown on the odds list at 4\/1. Colonel John won the Santa Anita
\nDerby early last month, but the Derby<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>
\nwill be the first race he has ever run on a dirt track. All of Colonel John\u2019s
\nprevious races were run on synthetic tracks, which could put him at a
\ndisadvantage in poor conditions. Pyro<\/span> was considered
\nto be a perennial favorite after winning his first two races of the season, but
\na disappointing 10^{th<\/sup>-place finish in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes
\nhas lowered his stock a little. Even with the questions after his Blue Grass
\nfinish, Pyro<\/span> is still listed at 6\/1 in the Derby<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>.<\/o:p><\/p>\n}

There are a number of other interesting stories scattered throughout the
\nrest of the field of 20, including Eight Belles. Listed at 20\/1, Eight Belles
\nis the first filly entered in the Derby<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>
\nsince 1999 when Excellent Meeting finished fifth and Three Rings was 19^{th<\/sup>.
\n<\/o:p><\/p>\n}

Trainer Barclay Tagg<\/span>, who trained 2003 Derby<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>
\nchampion Funny Cide<\/span>, pins his hopes for a return to
\nthe winner\u2019s circle on Tale of Ekati<\/span>. The 15\/1
\nunderdog won the Wood Memorial earlier this season to make him an interesting
\ndark horse on Saturday. Tagg<\/span> also has Big Truck in
\nthe Derby<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>, but he\u2019s already been
\nwritten off after receiving the worst odds in the field at 50\/1.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Trainer Todd Pletcher<\/span> failed to snap his long Derby<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>
\ndrought last year and he\u2019ll try again with a pair of horses this year. At
\n0-for-19 in the Derby<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>, Pletcher\u2019s<\/span> best chance at breaking that streak appears to
\nbe Monba<\/span>, who won the Blue Grass Stakes earlier this
\nyear and enters the Derby<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> at 15\/1. Pletcher\u2019s<\/span> other entry is Cowboy<\/st1:City>
\nCal<\/st1:State><\/st1:place> at 20\/1.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Two other horses listed at 20\/1 which are noteworthy include Visionaire<\/span> and Denis of Cork. Visionaire<\/span>
\nis this year\u2019s entry for trainer Michael Matz<\/span>, who
\ntrained 2006 winner Barbaro<\/span>. Oddly enough, Visionaire<\/span> drew the eighth post, the same position Barbaro<\/span> started from the year he won. Denis of Cork will be
\nridden by Calvin Borel<\/span>, who rode Street Sense to
\nvictory in last year\u2019s Derby<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>. The
\nlast jockey to win the Derby<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> in
\nback-to-back years was Ed Delahoussaye<\/span> on Gato<\/span> Del Sol in 1982 and on Sunny\u2019s<\/span>
\nHalo in 1983.<\/p>\n
