Clemson also features one of the nation\u2019s best<br \/>\nrunning attacks led by sophomore James Davis (1,134 yards, 17 <span\nclass=SpellE>TD\u2019s<\/span>) and freshman sensation <span class=SpellE>C.J<\/span>.<br \/>\nSpiller (914 yards, 10 <span class=SpellE>TD\u2019s<\/span>, 7.1 yards per carry).<br \/>\nThe Tigers are fifth in the NCAA in rushing yards per game (225.2) and ninth in<br \/>\nscoring average (33.8).<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<h2><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>Tennessean<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>A bit of shuffling will take place in the Clemson<br \/>\nsecondary as the Tigers try to replace starting cornerback Duane Coleman, who<br \/>\nlast week was suspended for the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl presented by<br \/>\nBridgestone. Coleman, a senior who had started 15 consecutive games, was<br \/>\ncharged with simple possession of marijuana last Wednesday during a traffic<br \/>\nstop for failing to use a turn signal. Clemson defensive coordinator Vic <span\nclass=SpellE>Koenning<\/span> said Tuesday that Chris Chancellor, a redshirt<br \/>\nfreshman who started three games at the cornerback position opposite of<br \/>\nColeman, would start at the \u201cfield cornerback position.\u201d At the other<br \/>\ncornerback <span class=SpellE>Koenning<\/span> said several players would be<br \/>\nused, including junior <span class=SpellE>C.J<\/span>. After getting hurt in the Oct. 21 game against<br \/>\nNorth Dakota State, <span class=SpellE>Spaeth<\/span> could have chosen surgery<br \/>\nimmediately to hasten the rehabilitation and avoid the risk of further injury<br \/>\nwith the potential of a big payday looming. But that wasn\u2019t the way he wanted<br \/>\nto finish. <span class=SpellE>Spaeth<\/span>, one of three finalists for the<br \/>\nJohn Mackey Award that\u2019s given to the nation\u2019s top tight end, came back in two<br \/>\nweeks and contributed in the last three games. All Gophers wins. All needed to<br \/>\nqualify for postseason play. <span class=SpellE>Spaeth<\/span> will certainly be<br \/>\nmissed, but it\u2019s on defense where <st1:State><st1:place>Minnesota<\/st1:place><\/st1:State><br \/>\n(6-6) could use the most help against air-it-out Texas Tech. Let\u2019s go<br \/>\nplayer-by-player:<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>Warren Carter. You may recall he injured his hip against <st1:State><st1:place>Missouri<\/st1:place><\/st1:State><br \/>\nand did not play the last two minutes of that game and sat out the <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Idaho<\/st1:PlaceName><br \/>\n<st1:PlaceType>State<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place> game. Carter was listed as<br \/>\n\u201ciffy\u201d for the upcoming Xavier game on Friday and Weber said before Christmas<br \/>\nbreak that Carter would need to do a good job following a therapy program the<br \/>\ntrainers prescribed for him during the <span class=SpellE>break.Carter<\/span><br \/>\nwas able to play for most of the practice session on Tuesday and even though he<br \/>\nreported some pain on Wednesday, Weber said he expected Carter to play 25<br \/>\nminutes or so vs. Xavier. That\u2019s very good news. Carter is <st1:State><st1:place>Illinois<\/st1:place><\/st1:State>\u2019<br \/>\nleading scorer and over his last seven games he is averaging 16.7 points and<br \/>\n7.4 rebounds while shooting 55.6 percent. Included in that stretch are three<br \/>\n20-plus point performances. Brian Randle was able to practice full-go on<br \/>\nTuesday. And even though he continues to experience some stiffness and<br \/>\nsoreness, there is no indication it should limit his play vs. Xavier. <span\nclass=SpellE>Jamar<\/span> Smith <span class=SpellE>conintues<\/span> to gain<br \/>\nstrength and Weber sounds very encouraged about his progress from the high<br \/>\nankle sprain. I think Weber is expecting him to recapture some of the<br \/>\nexplosiveness he lost due to the injury. Smith is shooting 46.3 percent from<br \/>\n3-point range and is the highest-scoring non-starter in the Big Ten.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>Point guard Chester Frazier is practicing although he<br \/>\nstill has pain and raw, tender feet. Blisters and <span class=SpellE>callouses<\/span><br \/>\non the bottom of his feet are the latest problem and new <span class=SpellE>orthodics<\/span><br \/>\nare being used to help relieve the pressure. He also needs to re-grow some skin<br \/>\nbut has shown the toughness to play through what must be considerable pain.<br \/>\nFrazier, by the way, is averaging 6.1 assists per game, which is second in the<br \/>\nBig Ten and 11<sup>th<\/sup> nationally. He also leads the team and is third in<br \/>\nthe Big Ten in steals.
