The Zips come into the contest with<br \/>\nvictories in three of their last four games. <st1:City><st1:place>Akron<\/st1:place><\/st1:City><br \/>\nhas started to show signs of life over the past few <span class=GramE>weeks,<\/span><br \/>\nhowever, it could be too late for the Zips to make a push for the division<br \/>\ntitle. The Zips are scoring just 22.9 ppg this year behind 338.3 total <span\nclass=SpellE>ypg<\/span>. A big reason for the sudden improvement on offense is<br \/>\nthe progress of the ground game. After a surprising 2005 campaign in which<br \/>\nthey defeated <st1:place>Northern Illinois<\/st1:place> for the MAC<br \/>\nchampionship, the Zips were picked to repeat as East Division champions in the<br \/>\npreseason poll. Early struggles in its conference schedule, however, have left <st1:City><st1:place>Akron<\/st1:place><\/st1:City><br \/>\n(5-5, 3-3 MAC) in a position where it would need to win out, along with a<br \/>\nlittle help, to fulfill the prediction. Led by a balanced offense and a stingy<br \/>\nrush defense, the Zips are winners of three of their last four and seem to be<br \/>\nlooking like the team those polled, and <span class=SpellE>Solich<\/span>,<br \/>\nexpected it to be. \u201cIt\u2019s obvious that they\u2019ve got talent and it\u2019s obvious that<br \/>\nthey\u2019re playing good football right now,\u201d <span class=SpellE>Solich<\/span><br \/>\nsaid. \u201cThe combination of those two things can make things difficult for the<br \/>\nteam.\u201d In its last four games, the <st1:City><st1:place>Akron<\/st1:place><\/st1:City><br \/>\noffense has averaged 377.5 yards per game thanks mostly to the efforts of<br \/>\nquarterback Luke <span class=SpellE>Getsy<\/span> and tailback Dennis Kennedy. <span\nclass=SpellE>Getsy<\/span> currently ranks second in the MAC, averaging 230.3<br \/>\npassing yards per game while Kennedy is the conference\u2019s third best rusher,<br \/>\ngaining 95.3 yards per <span class=SpellE>contest.Unlike<\/span> many of the<br \/>\nquarterbacks Ohio has faced this season, <span class=SpellE>Getsy<\/span> is a<br \/>\nmore traditional passer, letting his arm do most of the damage and only running<br \/>\nfor yards when absolutely necessary. <span class=SpellE>Muncy<\/span> said that<br \/>\nthe team is aware of <span class=SpellE>Getsy\u2019s<\/span> throwing abilities and<br \/>\nstressed that the team can not underestimate his ability to scramble. The 11<br \/>\nplayers the Zips line up on defense aren\u2019t slouches either, particularly<br \/>\nagainst the run, ranking fourth in the MAC by allowing just 131.7 yards on the<br \/>\nground per contest. In the season opener, <span\nclass=SpellE>MSU<\/span> managed to score just 45 points, but held Brown to 34,<br \/>\nthe lowest total by a Spartan opponent since Northwestern scored 29 on <st1:date\nYear=\"2000\" Day=\"27\" Month=\"1\">Jan. 27, 2000<\/st1:date>. The next day, the<br \/>\nSpartan offense erupted for 86 points. Through three games, Michigan State<br \/>\nleads the Big Ten in scoring defense (45.3 ppg) and field-goal percentage<br \/>\ndefense (.320), while ranking tied for second in blocked shots (5.33 <span\nclass=SpellE>bpg<\/span>) and third in 3-point field-goal percentage defense<br \/>\n(.281). <st1:State><st1:place>Texas<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> advanced to <st1:State><st1:place>New<br \/>\nYork<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> with two victories in the Austin Regional by an<br \/>\naverage margin of victory of +42.5 points. Two-time defending NIT champion <st1:State><st1:place>South<br \/>\nCarolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> returns two starters and five lettermen from<br \/>\na team that went 23-15 during the 2005-06 season. They have added seven<br \/>\nnewcomers, including three transfers that are eligible for action this season.<br \/>\nUSC returns four starters from a team that went 17-13. Things would really be<br \/>\nlooking up for the Trojans if not for the tragic shooting death of freshman<br \/>\npoint guard Ryan Francis last May and for junior All-Pac-10 guard <span\nclass=SpellE>Gabe<\/span> Pruitt being academically ineligible for the first<br \/>\nsemester. All-Pac-10 swingman Nick Young, however, does return to lead the<br \/>\nTrojans. Also back are senior guard <span\nclass=SpellE>Lodrick<\/span> Stewart, who is the top returning career scorer in<br \/>\nthe Pac-10 and senior center <span class=SpellE>Abdoulaye<\/span> <span\nclass=SpellE>N\u2019diaye<\/span>, who had 47 blocks and averaged 4.5 points and 4.7<br \/>\nrebounds per game in his first year at USC. The Trojans have brought in a<br \/>\nstrong recruiting class which features seven freshmen and is expected to give<br \/>\nthe Trojans the depth that they lacked a year ago. The Trojans lead the Pac-10<br \/>\nin returning production with 83.7 percent of their scoring and 86.5 percent of<br \/>\ntheir rebounding from the 2005-06 season returning (includes Pruitt\u2019s numbers).<br \/>\nUSC also leads with 96 percent of their blocked shot producers returning. The<br \/>\nTrojans return the conference\u2019s top two scorers from last season (Young &#8211; 17.3<br \/>\nand Pruitt 16.9) and the fourth-leading <span class=SpellE>rebounder<\/span> in<br \/>\nYoung (6.6).
