In the season opener, <span\nclass=SpellE>MSU<\/span> managed to score just 45 points, but held Brown to 34,<br \/>\nthe lowest total by a Spartan opponent since Northwestern scored 29 on <st1:date\nYear=\"2000\" Day=\"27\" Month=\"1\">Jan. 27, 2000<\/st1:date>. The next day, the<br \/>\nSpartan offense erupted for 86 points. Through three games, Michigan State<br \/>\nleads the Big Ten in scoring defense (45.3 ppg) and field-goal percentage<br \/>\ndefense (.320), while ranking tied for second in blocked shots (5.33 <span\nclass=SpellE>bpg<\/span>) and third in 3-point field-goal percentage defense<br \/>\n(.281). <st1:State><st1:place>Texas<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> advanced to <st1:State><st1:place>New<br \/>\nYork<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> with two victories in the Austin Regional by an<br \/>\naverage margin of victory of +42.5 points. In the regional semifinal, UT<br \/>\ndefeated <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Alcorn<\/st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>State<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place>,<br \/>\n103-44, behind 20 points from freshman Kevin Durant. In the second game, the<br \/>\nLonghorns used a 28-point effort from <span class=SpellE>A.J<\/span>. Abrams to<br \/>\ndefeat Chicago State, 92-66. <o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>Like <st1:State><st1:place>Michigan<\/st1:place><\/st1:State><br \/>\nState, <st1:State><st1:place>Texas<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> had three players<br \/>\ndrafted in the 2006 NBA Draft (<span class=SpellE>LaMarcus<\/span> Aldridge, <span\nclass=SpellE>P.J<\/span>. Tucker and Daniel Gibson). The Longhorns return just<br \/>\n14 percent of their scoring, 10 percent of their rebounding and 17 percent of<br \/>\ntheir minutes played from last season. <st1:State><st1:place>Texas<\/st1:place><\/st1:State>\u2019<br \/>\nroster features seven true freshmen and the probable starting lineup consists<br \/>\nof three freshmen and two sophomores. <o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<h1><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>South Carolina-USC<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/h1>\n<h2><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>Press Notes<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=MsoBodyText>The USC men\u2019s basketball team (0-0) opens the season vs. <st1:State><st1:place>South<br \/>\nCarolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> (1-0). Two-time defending NIT champion <st1:State><st1:place>South<br \/>\nCarolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> returns two starters and five lettermen from<br \/>\na team that went 23-15 during the 2005-06 season. They have added seven<br \/>\nnewcomers, including three transfers that are eligible for action this season.<br \/>\nUSC returns four starters from a team that went 17-13. Things would really be<br \/>\nlooking up for the Trojans if not for the tragic shooting death of freshman<br \/>\npoint guard Ryan Francis last May and for junior All-Pac-10 guard <span\nclass=SpellE>Gabe<\/span> Pruitt being academically ineligible for the first<br \/>\nsemester. All-Pac-10 swingman Nick Young, however, does return to lead the<br \/>\nTrojans. Last season he was one of three players in the Pac-10 to rank in the<br \/>\ntop 10 in the conference in both scoring and rebounds (17.3 ppg. 6.6 <span\nclass=GramE>rpg<\/span>) and is the leading returning scorer. Also back are<br \/>\nsenior guard <span class=SpellE>Lodrick<\/span> Stewart, who is the top<br \/>\nreturning career scorer in the Pac-10 and senior center <span class=SpellE>Abdoulaye<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=SpellE>N\u2019diaye<\/span>, who had 47 blocks and averaged 4.5 points<br \/>\nand 4.7 rebounds per game in his first year at USC. The Trojans have brought in<br \/>\na strong recruiting class which features seven freshmen and is expected to give<br \/>\nthe Trojans the depth that they lacked a year ago. The Trojans lead the Pac-10<br \/>\nin returning production with 83.7 percent of their scoring and 86.5 percent of<br \/>\ntheir rebounding from the 2005-06 season returning (includes Pruitt\u2019s numbers).<br \/>\nUSC also leads with 96 percent of their blocked shot producers returning. The<br \/>\nTrojans return the conference\u2019s top two scorers from last season (Young &#8211; 17.3<br \/>\nand Pruitt 16.9) and the fourth-leading <span class=SpellE>rebounder<\/span> in<br \/>\nYoung (6.6). XU was 21-11 overall last season, recording its<br \/>\nninth 20-win season in the last 10 years and its 19<sup>th<\/sup> 20-win season<br \/>\nin the last 24 years. XU has appeared in five of the last six NCAA Tournaments.<br \/>\nThe Musketeers won the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship by winning four games in<br \/>\nfour days this past March, making NCAA history by accomplishing that feat twice<br \/>\n(having also done it in 2004). The 2006 championship was XU\u2019s second A-10 title<br \/>\nin three years and its fourth in the past nine years, including 1998, 2002,<br \/>\n2004 and 2006. All five starters are back from the team that made the<br \/>\nlate-season championship run, including seniors Justin Cage and Justin <span\nclass=SpellE>Doellman<\/span>.
