Baseball coaching legend Sparky Anderson is under hospice card. Meanwhile Charlie Villanueva said that Kevin Garnett compared him to a cancer patient. Gambling advocates are cheering the wins of Barney Frank and Rand Paul, both pro-choice on the online gambling rights fight.

On the brighter front, sports handicappers have big plays tonight in college football and basketball.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

South Florida will play host to Rutgers in the only college football game on tap for Wednesday. The Scarlet Knights (4-3 SU, 1-5 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from an ugly 41-21 road loss to Pittsburgh in their last contest. Chas Dodd was held to just 62 yards passing and one interception for Rutgers in that defeat. The Bulls (4-3 SU, 2-4 ATS) are coming off a 38-30 road win over Cincinnati in which B.J. Daniels passed for 286 yards and a pair of scores. Oddsmakers have South Florida as 9.5-point favorites.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

A busy night around the NBA on Wednesday has a dozen games on tap: Detroit at Atlanta, Indiana at Philadelphia, Minnesota at Orlando, Charlotte at New Jersey, Milwaukee at Boston, Dallas at Denver, Toronto at Utah, San Antonio at Phoenix, Oklahoma City at the Clippers, Memphis at Golden State, the Lakers at Sacramento, and New Orleans at Houston. The Hornets (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS) are coming off a 99-90 win in San Antonio on Saturday night in which Chris Paul scored 25 points to go along with seven rebounds. The Rockets (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS) remained winless by falling 107-94 at home to Denver on Saturday. Luis Scola led the way with 28 points in that defeat.

Matt Rivers has a bombshell. Let me say this, parlays and teasers are flat out for suckers and suckers only and the ‘cappers who give them out a decent number of times are absolute clowns. With that said though there are a few spots a year that I will endorse playing the role of the sucker because every now and then the sucker will win and this is going to be one of those times. I am eating a little chalk in the Association tonight with a pair of favorites and making them just have to win the game in this 300,000* Ultra-rare ML parlay. Bonus 200,000* from the gridirion in the Big East clash between Rutgers and South Florida.

Finally, there are nine games on the NHL’s schedule for Wednesday, with Boston at Buffalo, the Islanders at Carolina, Toronto at Washington, Atlanta at Florida, New Jersey at Chicago, Pittsburgh at Dallas, Nashville at Phoenix, Tampa Bay at Anaheim, and Detroit at Calgary. The 6-2-1 Red Wings got past the Predators 5-2 at home last time out, as Pavel Datsyuk picked up two goals and an assist. The 6-5-0 Flames were thumped 7-2 by Washington at home last game for their second straight loss. The Red Wings beat the Flames 4-2 at home when the two teams met back on October 21.
