SMU +8 Oklahoma

Disciplinarian Matt Doherty is having the big short term positive influence that many of his ilk have. Under Doherty, who is in his first year at SMU, the Mustangs have won seven straight for the first time since 1999-2000. SMU has the chance to win three road games in succession for the first time in the program’s history.

SMU’s best wins are over Dayton, which is getting a couple votes in the AP poll, and buzzer beaters at TCU and against Illinois State.

The loss came, 59-52, at Florida State in SMU’s third game.

The Mustangs have done it with players who were role players last season. Leading scorer Ike Ofoegbu, a senior forward, is averaging 13.4 points after averaging 3.8 points last season.

SMU is balanced, with six players averaging between nine and 14 points. The Mustangs are holding opponents to 36.1 percent from the field, which ranks among the best in Division I.

The Massey Comparison Ratings, combining the strengths and weaknesses of all the top power ratings has SMU ranked at No. 50 and Oklahoma at 64.
