NBA

Knicks-Wizards

Washington Times

The Wizards
(37-35) began the trip with a quality win in Utah. And after an ugly loss
against the playoff-bound Los Angeles Clippers, they notched back-to-back wins
at Golden State and Sacramento. Washington then fell short at Houston when
Antawn Jamison missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds. In the final game of
the trip, the Wizards scored 39 points in the third quarter against San Antonio—the
most any team has scored against the defending champions in a quarter this
year. They lost the game, but it’s showed why the Wizards—once thought out of
the playoff race—seem headed to the postseason for the second straight year.
Which is exactly why Wizards coach Eddie Jordan does not want his team to get
too comfortable. Tonight, they play host to the abomination of a basketball
team that is the New York Knicks (19-53), and then it’s right back on the road
for two more games. the Wizards hope to see backup center Brendan Haywood back
in the lineup today. Haywood has missed the last three games with lower back
spasms. Haywood said yesterday he could have played Saturday had it been
absolutely necessary. Jordan said yesterday Haywood would be a game-time
decision tonight against the Knicks. Asked whether he is keeping his eyes on
the playoff race—the Wizards have a half-game lead over sixth-place Milwaukee—Jordan
said he is concerned with only the Wizards’ next opponent.

Celtics-Raptors

Boston, which
is 4 ½ games behind the Philadelphia
76ers for the eighth and final playoff spot, has lost seven of its last 10
games, including Saturday’s 100-94 loss to the Chicago Bulls. The Celtics are
2-5 over their last seven road games and 10-27 away from TD Banknorth
Garden this season. Meanwhile, the Raptors have dropped four in a row and are
0-3 on their current four-game homestand. Toronto
just suffered a 120-113 double-overtime loss to the New Orleans/Oklahoma City
Hornets at home. Morris Peterson had 27 points, nine rebounds and six assists,
while Charlie Villanueva added 25 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for the
Raptors, losers of five of six. The Raptors are 14-23 at the Air Canada Centre
this season. Tuesday’s meeting is the fourth and final matchup of the season
between Boston and Toronto.
The Celtics are 2-1 this season versus Toronto
and have won eight of the last 10 meetings. Boston
has dropped two of three, five of seven and nine of its last 14 trips to Toronto.
